Therapeutic Riding

Throughout the world, horseback riding is considered a uniquely beneficial form of therapy for challenged individuals. On horseback people, who are challenged, travel where wheelchairs, crutches and braces cannot take them. The rider's pelvis is tilted forward, then straightened and rotated from side to side. This motion helps strengthen spine and pelvic muscles, and improve balance, posture, and coordination. Spastic muscles relax and joints become more flexible. The transfer of heat from the horse warms the rider's muscles.

Mentally and emotionally challenged individuals benefit from the discipline and concentration required to master riding or relationships with horses.Often people with cognitive challenges are not able to take charge of their lives. Being able to give a horse commands and have him respond to them is a rider's reward.

Equine Assisted Therapy

"It's not just about riding…"
Many believe some people wouldn't be able to ride and wouldn't get any benefit from a therapeutic riding center. There are other benefits from working around horses and other animals. Just being near the horses-petting, leading, and grooming can stimulate a person mentally and emotionally. Taking a horse for a walk or grooming gives some people exercise if they do not get much at home. Being quiet and taking things slow around horses can help those who are overly active learn to slow down. Doing "tasks" like helping carry things, filling the water tanks, putting away tack in proper spot, etc. helps some to learn discipline and being helpful and cooperative in their daily life. Talking with instructors and volunteers can help with speech and social interaction. For some it is getting out in the fresh air
and seeing more than just the four walls of their home.
