Dallas Stars Draft Aquino, Rosa

(06-25-01)

The Dallas Stars drafted Merrimack stars Anthony Aquino and Marco Rosa in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft that took place this past weekend in Sunrise, Florida.

Aquino, a junior-to-be from Mississauga, Ontario, was selected 92nd overall (Round #3). The speedy right wing, recently invited to the Team Canada World Junior Camp, was ranked 77nd among North American forwards and defensemen in the Final Central Scouting Service Rankings and 83rd overall by The Hockey News. Some observers including Merrimack coach Chris Serino thought Aquino could have been selected higher, but Aquino was definitely relieved when his name was called near the end of the third round.

Rosa, a sophomore-to-be from Whitby, Ontario, was selected 255th (Round #8) by Dallas. The talented two-way center was expected to go higher in the draft. He was ranked 116th out of North American forwards and defensemen in the Final Central Scouting Service Rankings. Coach Serino told Kevin Conway of the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, "Some scouts think he'd be the better of the two as an NHL player because of his size and ability to develop (physically)."

Aquino and Rosa are the first two Warrior players since John Jakopin to be drafted in the NHL Entry Draft. Jakopin was selected 97th overall (Round #4) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Aquino is the second highest drafted Merrimack player all-time, only behind Jim Hrivnak who was selected 61st overall (Round #3) in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.
