Queen Jamilla

Last Updated July 2nd 2001

Queen Jamilla:

Padme Naberrie Amidala, who was Queen of Naboo during the events of Episode I, has since been succeeded by Queen Jamilla, played by Ayesha Dharker. Unwilling to abandon her goal of public service, Padme has now become Representative for Naboo in the Galactic Senate. Senator Padme and Queen Jamilla share a relationship based on mutual trust and respect, and although they are of almost the same age, Jamilla looks to her predecessor for guidance and help on crucial matters regarding Naboo's security and finances. Padme's experience is a source of wisdom that the new Queen of Naboo draws upon considerably, and Padme's say in the affairs of her home planet are, for all practical purposes, almost as strong as it was when she was Queen. Jamilla defers to Padme's judgment on various matters of state regularly, and holds her words in great esteem. The bond between the two is comparable to the one between Palpatine and Padme herself, when they were respectively Senator and Queen of Naboo.

Now it is possible that Ayesha Dharker plays two roles in this movie. I think I read that on some site somewhere where Ayesha Dharker is both a Queen and a Twi'lek (as separate characters and roles, because she DOES look a great deal like the Twi'lek in Select #26), and I think that because of those two Episode II selects, with a shot of Queen Jamilla facing sideways with a black veil over her face (Select #9 - and we all know that Ayesha Dharker is playing the role of Queen Jamilla) and then a shot of a character all dressed in green (a Twi'lek who looks a GREAT DEAL like Ayesha Dharker - Select #26), that people think that this is the same character (she is a Twi'lek Queen). So the theory goes, Ayesha Dharker is either a Twi'lek Queen, a Queen and in another role a Twi'lek, or just a Queen. So here is my theory: Even though the Twi'lek in Select #26 looks a great deal LIKE her, it may not actually BE her, and even if she is a Twi'lek in a separate role, it is most likely not a speaking role and probably not that interesting either. Personally, I think she is NOT a Twi'lek Queen but just a simple human like Padme Amidala was. Her Queen headpiece in Select #9 may make her look similar to a Twi'lek, but if you notice, her headpiece only has ONE "length" coming out of the headpiece in the MIDDLE of her head (probably her hair wrapped in cloth of some sort), whereas a Twi'lek has TWO "lengths" coming out more on the SIDES of their head (these are actually more like tails than hair). This just might be a vague similarity in the Queen's headpiece to a Twi'lek, but they are not the same. Also, in Select #9, the Queen's face is NOT green as far as I can tell, and the Twi'lek shown in Select #26 has a green face, so again, this proves that Queen Jamilla is NOT a Twi'lek. So, in my opinion, Ayesha Dharker is NOT a Twi'lek Queen, but may possibly have another background character role as a Twi'lek, which is not too interesting either.

And now for the two scenes that Queen Jamilla has in Episode II. Not much to it but it was all I could find:

SCENE 1: After the second assassination attempt on the life of Senator Amidala, Obi-Wan and Anakin have a meeting with the Jedi Council. It is decided that Anakin must accompany Padme back to Naboo where she'll be safe. The Jedi Council dispatches Obi-Wan to journey to Kamino to investigate who was really behind the assassination attempts on Senator Amidala. After a long journey through space (these scenes get the love story underway), Anakin and Padme arrive on Naboo. Here we are introduced to Queen Jamillia, the new ruler of Naboo. Padmé and Anakin have a small conversation with Queen Jamillia, who only has a small role and is featured merely in two scenes. Also present is Sio Bibble (Oliver Ford Davies), the Governor of Theed. In this scene, it is likely that Padme informs the Queen of the goings-on in the Senate (the vote, the attempts on her life, increasing corruption, etc.), and the Queen probably offers her supplies, protection, transportation, whatever she might need during her stay on Naboo. After that Padmé takes Anakin to her parents house in a middle-class area of Naboo.

SCENE 2: At the lake, Anakin tosses and turns in his bed and wakes up to a terrible nightmare concerning his mother. The next morning, Padme enters Anakin's room and finds him on the balcony meditating. She turns to leave and he tells her not to go. "Your presence is soothing," is the line. Anakin's concern for his mother grows so strong that he decides to leave Naboo with Padme and head for Tatooine. Anakin was under strict orders by the Jedi Council to stay on Naboo - he disobeys. Anakin and Padme make their way back to Theed where they meet Queen Jamillia. In the Palace, Padmé and Anakin tell her about their situation. Sio Bibble is also present. SIO BIBBLE: "What is your suggestion, Master Jedi?" Anakin explains to them their intention to go to Tatooine. The Queen gives them a starship for their travel (the Royal Cruiser). They thank her and depart for Tatooine, along with R2-D2.
