chapter three

"40-love, service," I cried out to the opponents. I tossed the ball up high and wacked it hard down into the service box.
"Yes!" cried Kristin. "Ace!" I smiled and walked up to the net. "Good game you guys."
"We'll get you next time," said our friend Allison.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Kristin mumbled as we walked off the courts.
"Girls, that was an awesome game. How would you like to play #1 doubles tomorrow in the Summer Scrimmage?" said Mike, our coach.
"Would we!" Kristin and I both exclaimed.
"Alright, I'll put you down. See ya tomorrow."
"Bye," we called as we hopped down the steps.
"Hey Kristin, can you give me a ride home?"
"Sure."
"Alright, thanks." Kristin's mom pulled up and we hopped in the backseat.
"How was practice?" her mom, Diane, asked.
"Great, we're playing #1 tomorrow in the Summer Scrimmage," said Kristin excitedly.
"Wow, congratulations," said Diane.
"Thanks," I said. "We've practiced really hard to get here."
"Yeah, I noticed." We pulled up to my driveway.
"Thank you for the ride," I said stepping out.
"No, problem, see ya tomorrow," said Diane.
"Bye, I'll call you tonight or something," said Kristin.
"Alright, bye." I got out my keys and unlocked the door. I set my stuff down and collapsed on the couch. Just then the phone rang. I lazily got up to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hi honey, it's me," said my mom.
"Hey guess what?! Tomorrow me and Kristin are--"
"Wait, my news is way more urgent. Lynn's having her baby!"
"What?! Now?!"
"Yeah, I've been trying to call you. She needs you to go over to their house and wait for Jon to come home. See, she was at the office when she started having contractions and Paul is in D.C. now so no one will be home for Jon. He had a church field trip and he'll be home at 3."
"O.k., I'll go over and wait for him. If you hear anything call me ok?"
"I will, call me if you need anything, alright?"
"I will, bye love you," I said and hung up the phone. I quickly changed my clothes and walked over to their house. I sat on the couch and waited. It was too nerve racking with no noise so I flipped on the T.V. It was an infomercial. I waited for about 15 minutes before I heard a car door slam outside. I ran to the door.
"Hi Shannon!" Jon called out as he ran and gave me a hug.
"Hiya shorty," I said to him. "Whatdaya have there?"
"We went to this museum with all these fishies and whales and stuff. And I bought this!" He proudly held up a shark jaw.
"Wow, that's really neat. But aren't you afraid it might come alive and eat you all up?" I said as I started tickling him.
"No, heh...stop, stop!" he cried laughing.
"O.k., I'll stop."
"What are you doing here anyway? Where's my mommy?"
"Guess what? She's having the baby!"
"Wow....are we gonna go to the hospital and see her?"
"Yeah, we'll go as soon as my mom gets home to come with us, ok?"
"O.k."
