chapter two
"Yeah, I'll be happy to sit for him
anytime."
"OK, good, because I don't think there are that many other kids around here
are there?"
"No, not really. There's just the Anderson's grandchildren who come visit
every summer, but they're too young for me. About 7 or 8 or something."
"Alright, I'll give you a call sometime. You must feel very uncomfortable
standing in the entryway the whole time. Forgive me, I don't know where my mind
is today. It's just been so busy moving here unexpectedly and keeping a low
profile, and with the baby..."
"Low profile?" I thought to myself. "No, it's alright, really.
This is a very nice entryway," I said and we both laughed.
"Here, let me introduce you to my husband. Paul?! Can you come here hun? We
have company." A tall, lean man with brown hair and a beard came down the
stairs.
"Hi, I'm Paul, and you are?"
"I'm Shannon, you're neighbor."
"She made us these brownies," Lynn said.
"Oh how nice. Looks like someone's already had a few," Paul said
looking at Jon. Jon had a ring of chocolate around his mouth and a crumb on his
cheek. We all laughed and Jon just stood there smiling.
"Well, I better get him cleaned up. But it was very nice meeting you and
feel free to come over here anytime. Remember I'll be giving you a call about
Jon, ok?'' Lynn said.
"Yeah, anytime." I said.
"Yes, it was very nice meeting you," Paul said as he shook my hand.
"You too. See you around. Bye Jon," I said kneeling down and shaking
his hand.
"Bye Shannon" Lynn said as I walked out the door.
"They seem really nice," I thought to myself. I was only in my house
for a minute when my mom walked in.
"Did you go over and introduce yourself?" she asked. "And did you
bring the brownies?"
"Yeah, I did. They are really nice. There's the mom, Lynn, and she's seven
and a half months pregnant. And then there's Paul, Lynn's husband, and then
there's Jon."
"Jon?" my mother asked curiously.
"Yeah, but he's not exactly the cute guy I was hoping for."
