The Only Gift

She sighed. It was just after three in the morning. She was tired, extremely tired, and yet, the sleep refused to come. Something about the silence in the darkness was unsettling.

* I wanna take you higher...* A smile crept across her face. She always loved hearing him sing that song. Had she forgotten to turn off the stereo before she’d gone to bed? It was just a shame that the others- wait a minute... the others sing that with him. * I wanna reach for the sky.* But...

That didn’t explain the solo.

She’d forgotten to turn off the equalizer. The air circulating from the ceiling fan caused her to pull her night shirt against her body. She winced after hitting her leg on the edge of the bed. * I wanna show you fire.... *After flipping the light switch, she walked across the room to the stereo. The power was off.

"Dreaming... I’m dreaming again." She grumbled as she moved back to turn off the over-head light. * I’ll never tell you good-bye * It wasn’t until her fingers flipped the switch that she recognized the scent wafting
throughout the room. His cologne. She took in a deep breath. Handling the loneliness throughout their times apart was difficult, but the Christmas season was always the hardest. "Not again." She moved into the bathroom and splashed cold water on her face before sliding back into bed. * You make me wanna be a better man.*

He was there beside her.

She gasped as she caressed his cheek, fighting back the tears of joy that threatened to spill. "Y-you-you’re" He silenced her as they shared their first kiss. She pulled away and looked him over. "H-how did you-?" His eyes glittered like sapphires in the glow of the lamp. He traced her jaw line with his thumb after pulling her onto his lap. She slid against his body as their lips locked. After nearly two years of being thousands of miles apart, the inches that now separated them were unbearable. Her heart jumped into her throat as he slid the robe off of her shoulders. She could see the twinkle in his eyes and found herself wondering what plans he had made for the night.

"We’ve been apart for too long. Do you have any idea of even half of the things I’ve waited to tell you?" He pulled the blanket around them, grinning as the smile spread across her face. "We have all night. Tell me now."

"Highs today in the teens, dangerously low wind chills later tonight!"

She awoke with a start, slamming the alarm clock agains the wall before her tears soaked the pillow she laid on. She wiped her face and picked up the phone. "Rich, it’s me, baby. I had that dream again."
