To the GreenRabbit's Story

Long ago, before the dinosaurs, when the earth was empty, the earth was very different. North America was filled with strange creatures, like tabbits and shroombunns. The skies were filled with pinflaps and angelbunns. The sea was filled with merbunnies, and the air was filled with rabbit spirits. And the earth's ground was filled with bunnies. The world was ruled by the sun, and the moon. Everybody knows that rabbits are the most gentle, intelligent creatures, so the sun and moon told the rabbits that they could rule the world as they wished. The rabbits lived in harmony with the other creatures. But back then, rabbits were always brown. The rabbits showed up against the grass in summer, and the snow in winter. So the rabbits were hunted, and although they ruled the world, always lived in fear.

Soon the rabbits became fed up. They decided that since they ruled the world, they should not have to constantly be afraid, and they should have better defense than any other creature. So the rabbits went up to the sun and moon and explained to them their troubles. The sun and moon were very kind, and felt sorry for the rabbits, who rightfully ruled, but were constantly hunted. The sun and moon said "A ruler must be crafty, and must hide well. We understand your despair, so we have devised the perfect camouflage method that you may have as long as you rule. Every summer, you will be green like the grass, and every winter you will magically turn white as the snow. So as long as you rule, rabbits, you will be the most hidden of all animals." The rabbits were very pleased, and for years and years they were the craftiest, best rulers of all. then, something happened. Men came with their own gods, and overruled the sun and moon. Without the sun and moon to balance things, they destroyed and took over the world in quick time. It soon became obvious that the rabbits were no longer the rulers of the world. The sun and moon were very unhappy about it, but they remembered their promise and told the rabbits that they would take away their magic and make them brown again. The rabbits were devastated. They begged and pleaded with the sun and moon to allow them to keep their magic. After much discussion, the sun and moon came to a decision. "Rabbits," they said "we have decided that instead of taking away your magic completely, we will allow you to have your magic- but only in winter. In the summer, the magic will fade and you will become brown as you were before." The rabbits accepted this sadly. And when the summer came, they turned back to their ordinary brown color and had to hide in their holes or in the grass. But the story doesn't end there. There was another catch in the deal. The sun and moon were so fond of the rabbits that they allowed a very small amount of them to remain green- but only about 5 or 6 at a time. The sun and moon's promise keeps the green rabbits alive- But they all hide in the deepest, narrowest burrows so that no humans ever see them....
