Why create the ASG 5.0 System?
    by Adam Goldstein

Many people are considering the ASG 5.0L. For that, I couldn't be any happier.

The ASG 5.0L puts a W-body into a different league or class. The way I see it, if you go from a 2.8 to the 5.0L, you have doubled your HP (very significant) and you have bumped into the V8 leagues. If you go from an L67 3800SC to the 5.0L, you have increased your HP only moderately, but still, you have a the feel, the essence of that V8 and there is nothing like it. An L67 with underdrive pullies on the supercharger can produce 300 HP, more than the 5.0L, and with decent reliability. If what you are looking for is raw HP, that is a better choice than the 5.0L although not necessarily less expensive. (keep in mind that an ASG drive train is brand new so to compare apples-to-apples you need to price a new or rebuilt L67, computer, wiring, and new tranny) What the L67 can never do is get you into the V8 league or give you the goose bumps that come from entering that league in such an unlikely car.

A word to those who are considering the conversion from an engine in the 260 HP range: Our engine will unquestionably produce more horsepower. The thing is, the kit is expensive. While I want to sell as many of these as I can, I want the customers to be ecstatic with their cars. 25 or 30 HP is not much of a difference for the kind of scratch this kit costs. To me, I'll be honest, if raw horse power is what I am looking for, 25 or 30 HP is not a good use of the $thousands our set up costs. That's just the economic truth.

The big difference, and the reason I would buy one in a heartbeat, is what these cars FEEL like. It can't be described. The deep bass note of the slower idle of the V8 gives you goose bumps when you turn the key. The smooth power curve can't be duplicated. It is probably an illusion, but the whole car feels more solid. (just for the record, it is NOT heavier by more than 30 pounds.) Then there is the factor that you have a car that very few other poeple have anything like. Most anyone can install mods on their existing engine, but raise the hood of a W-ASG 5.0L and you are in a different bracket.

    ASG 5.0 Engine Technical Specifications

The ASG 5.0 System was designed to update the GM W class cars to modern, fuel injected V8 power. It can also be used as a direct, drop-in replacement for the Cadillac 4.9L engine and 4T60-E transmission in cars so equipped.

ASG 5.0 engines begin life as a new GM Goodwrench Cadillac OHV 4.9L V8. This engine was the mainstay for Cadillac from 1991-1994 when it was replaced by the 4.6L DOHC Northstar Engine. The 4.9L OHV V8 is rated at 200 HP at 4100 RPM, and 275 ft-lbs of Torque at 3000 RPM by Cadillac. Cadillac mated the 4.9L OHV V8 with their strongest front-wheel drive automatic transmission of the day -- the Cadillac 4T60-E.

Note: although the ASG 5.0 is capable of more HP, peaking at 290 hp at 6000 rpm on an engine dyno, the shift points on the 4T60-E will limit the engine to approximately 4900 rpm.  The figures shown reflect this real-world in-car limitation.

What is the HP/Torque at the wheels, as shown on a chassis dyno?

Well, we don't know yet.  ASG has not tested a car and/or has not released the figures.  Assuming a 25% drive train loss through the 4T60-E transmission, they might be:
