"You dream as a youngster to play professional sports, and I don't think you realize the magnitude of the impact you can have on someone's life. It can be overwhelming." ~Derek Jeter
Derek Jeter established the Turn 2 Foundation to help keep kids away from substance abuse and to encourage them to stay healthy and active in school. Mr. Jeter has always looked up to Hall-of-Famer and former Yankee outfielder, Dave Winfield, as a role model. He saw how even though Mr. Winfield was a big-time athlete, he still took time to help others. In 1996, Mr. Jeter created the Turn 2 Foundation to reach out to the public and to promote healthy lifestyles for children. The Turn 2 Foundation has raised money and especially helped kids in the New York metropolitan and Western Michigan areas. A few ways that the Turn 2 Foundation has reached out to kids and teens are through grants to places such as: the YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club of Kalamazoo and the Bronx, a $125,000 minority college scholarship in Jeter's name, the Turn 2 After School Program in Harlem, and the Jeter's Leaders program for academically-focused students who commit themselves to living drug-free lives. Dr. Charles Jeter, Derek's father and President of the foundation, is a former drug abuse counselor who knows the dangers of substance abuse.
