the savage experiment

The idea struck a few weeks ago.

I thought, why not? After all, it is always wise to encourage that little inventive voice in the corner of your mind. And after all, this is something about Savage Garden.

What I wanted to do would take a lot of willpower. It would test my strength to its limits. It would be a Herculean effort to see it through. But I would succeed.

I stayed away from the Savage Garden CDs for 3 weeks. To remove temptation, I took the albums out of my drawer and put them where the rest of the CDs were ( and where I could not see them).

During that agonising period, I listened to other artistes: Ricky Martin, Westlife, the Corrs, J-pop...(note that this is Not a betrayal of my savage faith. This was done for the sake of my experiment).

What is the purpose, you ask? Well, I needed a change of perspective. Listening to Savage Garden albums everyday loses the meaning of the songs. You think you're listening, but you aren't. And that defies everything that you fight for for Savage Garden.

At the end of 3 weeks, I placed "Affirmation" into the player with trembling hands. And skipped to "Hold Me". Then, "Gunning Down Romance". Then "Crash and Burn". "The Animal Song". "Affirmation". "The Best Thing"...

It was beautiful. It was as if I was hearing the songs for the very first time, yet with that touch of familiarity. You have no rEal idea how well Darren sings and the depth of emotion in the songs until you actually listen with a fresh ear. I was a fan reborn.

Conclusion: try it.
