FAQ

FAQ

* What is a FAQ?

The British Columbia Bartending Institute has been in continual operation since 1986 resulting in many people seeking information about the course, bartending schools and bartending in general. The following are typical of the "frequently asked questions."

* How much do bartenders make?

The hourly wage for bartenders is from min. wage to about $25. In most situations the wage is a small factor in the income. In busy clubs and pubs most bartenders make hundreds of dollars in tips per shift.

* What is the age of a bartending student? (am I too young or old?)

17 to 70. The school has had a good mix of ages of students. There are many types of bars. The restaurant and night club scene is younger oriented and the pub and golf club scene is a more mature environment. Age is not a factor in success. The minimum age to work as a bartender in B.C. is 19. Other areas vary from no minimum to 21.

* Is bartending a "male thing"?

At one time bartenders were mostly men but it has changed in the last 20 years to be at least equal female-male. There are some bar owners who hire only males and some who hire only females, however, most base their hiring on qualifications without gender discrimination.

* What happens with the drinks made during the training?

Most of the practice is done with colored fluids made to simulate the spirits and mix. It pours the same, mixes & looks the same but is not for drinking. An average day at the school a student makes over 200 drinks. It would be impracticable to use real alcohol. There are some tasting using real product but it is not a requirement of the course.

* What do I get if I complete the training?

Not considering specific language requirements you will have attained the skills and knowledge to perform as a professional bartender in any type of bar anywhere in the world.

* Do I get a bartenders license or certificate?

You will receive the British Columbia Bartending Institute's Professional Bartending Diploma  and a World Bartenders Training Organization (WBTO) international travel card.   There is no official or legal bartenders certificate or license required but most employers require that you have certification from a reputable school. The power of the diploma is the name and reputation of the institution in the industry.

* Is your program government certified or approved?

The provincial governmental requirement to offer educational programs in British Columbia is that a school be registered with the Private Post Secondary Educational Commission (PPSEC). This registration does not certify the quality and content of the program. It ensures that the school is financially sound and that in the event of closure a student would receive a refund of tuition. There are bar fly by night schools operating illegally in the lower mainland. Asking to see a school's business license and PPSEC registration certificate is some protection against frauds and bar scam masters. Some business's in BC are registered with PPSEC but are or have been advertising that their bartending training programs are "government certified". These are bogus claims and they are knowingly attempting to deceive you. For further information regarding this contact the Private Post Secondary Education Commission at 604 660-4400 or http://www.ppsec.bc.ca/ and the Better Business Bureau at 604 688-1544 .The British Columbia Bartending Institute has been certified federally by Employment and Immigration Canada as an educational institute enabling tuition fees to be tax deductible.

* There are other bartending schools. They all claim to be the best and the only one to attend. Who do I believe?

The only one you can believe is yourself . All the bartending schools are independently operated, with varying degrees of competency and ethics, private schools. You must do some research and analysis to prove to you which one is the best. Dis all self-given awards such as, "Vancouver's #1", "Vancouver’s Top", "B.C.`s #1", "Canada's Standard", Internationally Recognized" etc. As with people, the larger the boast, it is always, the weaker the character. Get the basic info regarding times, costs, course outline, class size, etc. from the people representing the school but realize their income is related to the number of students they recruit. The real reputation of the school in the industry is the most important quality. Go to some bars that you would like to work at and ask the manager or staff their opinions of the various schools. Check with the Better Business Bureau if the school has had complaints registered against them and when they actually began as a school in British Columbia. (the British Columbia Bartending Institute is in the BBB database as BC Bartending Institute) If in any way the schools advertising or information given you has been false -beware! The content and quality of a schools program is another important consideration. Using the analogy of buying a computer, compare the components of the different systems. (is the monitor included? how large is the hard drive? is the processor a P4 or an old 386? etc.) or do I have to take and pay for other courses at the school to receive the full professional bartending program offered at another school. Compare course outlines. The instructors experience is a very important consideration. Some schools that claim to have been operating for 30 years or more and have 150 years of teaching experience are either just newly bought franchises , owned & operated by businessmen with little or no teaching experience, or owned by suits living in other cities and countries that have to find new "instructors" every few months to process their customers. A school is only as good as who is actually in the classroom teaching you, not how many franchises they have sold, years the business has been advertising, bogus claims of greatness, or the number of customers they have processed. The British Columbia Bartending Institute's instructor has been teaching adults bartending full time for the past 20 years. TEACHING ADULTS IS A PROFESSION THAT CANNOT BE DONE EFFECTIVELY BY AMATEURS. Compare the schools maximum class size and equipment. Bartending training is a very "hands on" type of learning. Most effective is a fully stocked bar with one student, one instructor, and 200 customers. This ideal would not be a viable way of maintaining a school. The British Columbia Bartending Institute has a 40 foot long bar with 15 fully set up training stations and a policy of 15 students maximum per class. The educational philosophy of the school is QUALITY NOT QUANTITY. Any type of experienced professional teacher (elementary, high school , college, university or trade training) will state that the most important element in a learning environment is class size. SMALLER IS ALWAYS BETTER! Beware of schools where there is no maximum class size or there is less than one full bar setup per student. Avoid schools that attempt to justify their large class size by claiming to use 2 teachers and then say that they have a low teacher-student ratio. Professional teachers will tell you it does not work. It's as the old saying -"two cooks spoil the soup". You should visit the schools to see how well equipped they are. A few glasses and some bottles sitting on shelves or tables is not an adequate bar setup for pro training. Length of course tied in with equipment is another factor of quality. If a school has 6 bar setups and takes 18 students and the course is only 24 hours long it is only effectively an 8 hour course to an individual student. Bartending training is somewhat like learning to play a musical instrument. Along with quality instruction, the more you practice the better you get and you have to have a decent instrument to practice. You learn very little waiting your turn watching someone else. You will probably go to only one bartending school. Don't be disappointed. Do your research and be sure it is the best.

* Where is the school?

Sixth St. and Eighth Ave. in the uptown area of New Westminster (773 6th St.). The location is central to Greater Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and the Lower Fraser Valley. (30 min. or less from anywhere by car or easy access by transit.) There is lots of free parking available.

* There is a school that is closer to where I live. It would be more convenient to attend. If I can get a bartending certificate there, why should I consider other schools?

There is a truth about what 3 things give real estate its relative worldly value. It is: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. In education and training, the absolute truth is: QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY. As stated previously in this FAQ, the factors to consider when choosing a school are: the real reputation in the hospitality industry (not self-given bogus claims of greatness); the teachers talent, experience and care; class size; course content; course duration; and how well equipped the school is. These are the factors that give an educational program and it's certification their value. A more convenient location has no value in education and training. It would not be wise to attend a school because it is 15 minutes or so closer. Education can be a treasure that will be with you all your life and more, or a mediocre experience that you write off as a bad decision and soon forget. Do a careful comparison and attend the school proven to you to have: QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY.

*How do I register for the training program?

So like I was working this bar down in Florida eh! It was close to a hospital. Every day at precisely one p.m., a doctor would come in and order a daiquiri with a small bowl of salted almonds. One day I 86`d on the almonds and laid down some hickory nuts. "What's this? These are not almonds!" He exclaimed. "Its a Hickory Daiquiri Doc." I explained.
