Bryan Brazos Christian School canceled last week's junior high six-man football game with Alta Vista Christian Academy of College Station because the Alta Vista team includes two girls. Brazos Christian headmaster Geoff Brown said his school is governed by TAPPS rules, which doesn't allow for coed play at the high school level.

Brown said Brazos Christian's junior high abides by the same rules. Alta Vista is an independent school.

April Wichkoski, 15, starts at running back for Alta Vista and 15-year-old Elizabeth Black starts at left guard. Brazos Christian already has canceled its October rematch against Alta Vista.

"People have the misconception that we don't want girls to play football," Brown said. "That's not the case at all. The issue is physical contact. We're trying to teach these boys to show respect toward the opposite sex, meaning they can never hit a girl or things of that nature.

"On the football field, these boys would be put into a confusing situation because now we're telling them just the opposite. We're telling them to hit, block and tackle girls."

Kimberley Williams, the headmaster at Alta Vista, said: "One of the ladies in our office pointed out that, in biblical times, they sent Deborah out to battle the Israelites. Believe me, that's full contact."

Carm Taglione passed for a pair of scores and sophomore Justine Christiansen made Mechanicville history by being the first female to carry the ball in a varsity football game. Christiansen carried the ball once in the fourth quarter for two yards. Voorheesville's Jennifer Elliot was the first female to compete at the varsity football level in Section II in the late 1980s. Taglione, who completed 4-of-5 passes for 60 yards, tossed a 5-yard pass to Mike Adams in the first quarter as the Red Raiders (7-1) raced to a 28-0 lead. Marc Alpy added 60 yards in five carries for Mechanicville.

She gets her kicks

Heather Cerovski didn't even get to see the winning kick that lifted her into the record book in Michigan high school football.

''I concentrated on keeping my head down,'' she said. ''I didn't see where the kick went. Shon Taylor, the quarterback, was holding and he said, 'Great job' and patted me on the head.''

Thus, Cerovski became the first female to score a point in a Michigan high school football game when she kicked an extra point for Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in the third quarter of a Sept. 10 loss to Portage Central.

Loy Norrix Coach Mike Taylor recruited Cerovski after seeing her play soccer last spring.

MOVE OVER MARCY: It seems Bismarck St. Mary's kicker Marcy Herner isn't the first girl to appear in a high school varsity football game in North Dakota.

Richardton-Taylor coach Pete Krieg said Jamie Schank was a kicker for the Raiders last season. The team didn't kick PAT, but Schank handled kickoff duties, and she had at least one tackle.

Krieg said her dad would not let her play again this season, so the senior is a student manager.

Fallston

Kristy Heron of Fallston entered the county football record book 10 days ago when she became the first girl to compete in a regular game. After Craig Strobel had missed an attempted extra point after the Cougars' first touchdown against North Harford, coach Dave Cesky sent in Heron the next chance he had.

Heron's kick was down the middle for a 13-6 advantage. The Hawks later tied the game and won it in overtime. Although the first county player, there have been other girls who played in the past elsewhere, including a kicker-holder combination in Montgomery County.

Even though she had a poor shooting night and her team was soundly defeated last night by Garfield, 66-44, Roosevelt High School's Kari McCallum is happy to be playing basketball again.

McCallum, an all-Metro AAA guard for the Roughriders last season as a junior, made history this fall as the first female to play football in the Metro League.

``I'm really glad to be back playing basketball,'' said McCallum, who was a reserve placekicker on the Roughrider football team. ``We didn't play well tonight, but this is a lot more fun.''

Arguello is one of two Kent girls on eighth-grade football teams this season. Amber Mahoney plays for Mattson Junior High. Another girl went out for the Sequoia team, but quit three weeks ago to concentrate on school work, coaches said.

Arguello and Mahoney are linemen and there's a slim possibility they could wind up across from each other tomorrow when Sequoia (4-0) plays at Mattson (2-2). Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

PEORIA -- When Mary Reynolds speaks of surviving her freshman season at Central, the metro area's first female high school football player is not talking figuratively.

All a 5-foot-11, 215-pound frame has done for her so far is make an easy target.

Leavitt, Bob. "Here's the kicker: He's a she." Peoria Journal Star. 09/15/1995: C1
CHILLICOTHE -- Sometime in Ali Nicolle's life, somebody must have predicted the Illinois Valley Central junior would be the first girl in the Journal Star area to score a point in a varsity football game.
