States' Girls in Football/Contact Sports Rules As of October 1985
Girls were prohibited from playing boys contact sports in the following states:
- New Hampshire
- New York
- Rhode Island
- West Virginia
NOTE: Oregon recommended against girls playing football but had no outright restrictions.
These states had no restrictions whatsoever on girls playing football:
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- South Carolina
- In Illinois, girls could play in regular season football games, but not in the playoffs.
- Iowa, South Dakota, and Wisconsin had no restrictions on girls playing football, but those who wanted to play were counseled beforehand and advised against it.
- Michigan and New Mexico had no official state policies.
