Latvia is situated on the Baltic coast and borders Estonia in the North, Lithuania in the South, the Russia in the East and Belarus in the Southeast. The coastal plain is mostly flat, but inland to the east the land is hilly with forests and lakes. A total of 40%of the country is covered by forests, 10% consist of peat bogs, 2-3% of fresh water reservoirs, 40% is used for agriculture and 4% consist of towns, villages and roads. Total number of lakes is 2.300. There are about 12.000 rivers in Latvia, but only 17 are longer than 100 km. The ports of Riga,Liepaja and Ventspils are ice free during winter.
Climate:
Moderate Central European sea climate, often changeable. In Summer it can be hot (over 30°C) and dry but also rainy. In winter the lowest temperature can be -29°C.

Longest - Gauja 452 km.
Longest - Daugava 1 020 km (352 km in Latvia).
Forests:
Total area - 26 000 km2, 40% of the country's territory.
Lakes:
Deepest: Dridzis, 65,1 m.
Largest:Lubans 82,0 km2, Raznas 57,6 km2, Engures 41,3 km2, Burtnieks 40,0 km2.
