Strategies To Obtaining Autographs

Obtaining Autographs Through The Mail Strategy

Here’s my strategy in obtaining autographs through the mail:
1. Included a SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope). Players receive a large amount of mail and most respond to their mail. If a player were to have to pay for stamps to respond to a fan, most wouldn’t even respond.
2. Say Thank You. Other than being polite, you are asking a player to do something for you at no cost!
3. Keep the letter short and know a little bit about the player. If you letter includes a bit of detail about the player, i.e., reaching a milestone, a good game, a great play made, recuperating from an injury, etc. shows that you are a true fan of the player.
4. Do not send anything that is of high value! There is a likelihood that your request for an autograph will not be responded to and the item lost forever.
5. Should I place the card in a rigid card holder when I send a request? This is entirely up to you. If you are sending only one card, there should be no additional charge for postage. Also, consider the time it takes for the player to take the card out of the rigid. This may be the best way to receive that card in great shape but it may decrease your opportunity to have the card signed. I had sent some cards in card sleeves but found that if the ink isn’t dry, the autograph gets smudged in the sleeve. I usually send the card(s) tucked in the SASE and have the letter folded around the SASE.
6. For newer cards that have an ultra gloss on them, try rubbing baby powder on the card to decrease the gloss. It seems to work for me!

In-Person Autographs

There are lots of opportunities to obtain autographs in-person. If you are attending a game, try to arrive early as possible. Players will be arriving at the stadiums early and you could meet one of then at the player’s entrance. Always be familiar with the stadium layout of entrances. Once inside of the stadiums, player may sign autographs during warm ups. Try to get as close to the playing field as possible.

Many teams offer opportunities to meet the players at their yearly “Fanfest”. Check with the teams and they usually have at least one date set for the annual event. Minor league teams usually have more events where players are available to meet their fans.

Store Grand Openings may have a player signing autographs to attract crowds. These are great opportunities to obtain autographs and briefly converse with players. My daughters scour this type of opportunities to meet their favorite music groups also!

Remember always to be courteous and say thank you!!

I do not recommend approaching players who are spending time with their families or having dinner. They do have a private life outside of that of a sports figure and we must all remember that!
