Walsall 5-1 Swansea

Walsall raced to their seventh successive home league win to keep alive their automatic promotion hopes. Swansea were unlucky to have a 16th-minute goal by Giovanni Savarese ruled out because of a foul on the goalkeeper, but once Brett Angell shot the Saddlers ahead after 33 minutes there was no doubt about the outcome.

In the second half Walsall ran riot as Angell scored his second after 51 minutes and top-scorer Jorge Leitao headed his 13th of the season after 65 minutes.

Steve Watkin pulled one back for Swansea with a 68th-minute penalty, before winger Paul Hall grabbed two more for Walsall to keep them on the heels of Millwall at the top of the table.

Bournemouth 0-1 Swansea

Giovanni Savarese scored his eighth goal of the season to steer Swansea into the third round of the LDV Vans Trophy at Dean Court with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth. The Venezuelan striker took the ball off the foot of team-mate Stuart Roberts five minutes into the second half before beating Michael Menetrier at the far post.

Swans goalkeeper Roger Freestone had kept the visitors in the game in the first half with a string of fine saves to deny the home side.

The former Chelsea stopper seemed determined not to let Bournemouth notch their third win of the season against John Hollins' side.

Garreth O'Connor found no way through with his powerful shot after 24 minutes after he did well to control a cross from the left from wingback Narada.

But Freestone had a lucky escape on 36 minutes after completely misjudging a long ball from Bournemouth defender Jason Tindall which almost let striker Chukki Eribenne in on goal.

Swansea's best effort of the first period came through David Romo's curling free-kick which Menetrier did well to tip over.

After Savarese's goal, Bournemouth had their best spell of the match and on 55 minutes Jason Smith had some good fortune when Northampton referee Richard Beeby failed to spot his clear back-pass.

Michael Howard rescued Freestone with a vital clearance after he spilled a William Huck cross at the near post.

But the Swans knew it was to be their night when their slender lead was preserved when Smith's wayward defensive header rebounded to safety off the top of Freestone's crossbar.

Wigan 2-0 Swansea

Two goals from Andy Liddell, his first since November, gave Wigan the points as they pilled the misery on struggling Swansea. Swansea's misery was completed when they had defender Jason Smith sent off four minutes from time for a tackle on Liddell.

The sharp-shooter fired Wigan in front after 27 minutes beating Roger Freestone from the edge of the box and hit the killer goal after 71 minutes.

In a one-sided first half Wigan had chances galore with Simon Haworth and Lee Ashcroft both hitting the Swansea crossbar.

They also had two disallowed with Scott Green and Ashcroft the disappointed players.

Swansea keeper Freestone also produced a magnificent fingertip save to deny Haworth in the second half while Swansea were restricted to a couple of shots from Steve Watkin which failed to trouble Derek Stillie.
