Portland, Oregon Hockey Trivia
The Portland Rosebuds met the Montreal Canadiens
in the 1916 Stanley Cup final, losing to the Habs 3-games-to-2.
Their jersey is on display in the
Hockey Hall of Fame.
Detroit Red Wings star Sergei Federov
defected to the U.S.A. in Portland, while his Soviet team was on the way to Seattle for the Goodwill Games.
Portland's most (in)famous skater is
Tonya Harding,
banned from International Figure Skating for the attack on Nancy Kerrigan
before the '94 U.S. figure skating championships.
Though not a hockey player, she probably wouldn't have trouble fitting in with them! ;-)
Keanu Reeves,
who played goalie on his school hockey team in Canada, starred in
My Own Private Idaho,
which was filmed in Portland.

Portland, Oregon Hockey History
Portland, Oregon
has never been home to a National Hockey League team,
and hockey isn't first (or even second) in the hearts of most local sports fans today, so you could be forgiven for
not realizing that the Rose City has a long, rich hockey history:

Western Hockey League 1960-74
In 1960 the New Westminster Royals of the Western Hockey League moved and became the
Portland Buckaroos,
the farm team for first the NHL's Boston Bruins and later the Chicago Blackhawks.
In 14 years, they won 8 regular-season championships and 3 post-season championships.
The NHL only had 6 teams back then, unlike today's talent-diluted 30-team circuit,
so the level of play must have been fairly high.
The Buckaroos roster featured players with familiar and not-so-familiar names:
- Doug Messier (Wainwright AB),
father of Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers star
Mark Messier
- Pat "Whitey" Stapleton (Sarnia ON),
later a great Chicago Blackhawk defenceman
- Dallas Smith (Hamiota MB),
later Bobby Orr's defence partner with the Bruins
- Dale Rolfe (Timmins ON)
- (Brantford ON)
Barry Long, later a defenceman with the
WHA Edmonton Oilers,
- Ray McKay (Edmonton AB),
later a defenceman with the
WHA Edmonton Oilers
- Jerry Korab (Sault Ste. Marie ON),
later a defenceman with the Buffalo Sabres 1973-1980
- Tom McVie, later a coach with the Winnipeg Jets, Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils
- Jack Bionda (Huntsville ON)
- Hal Laycoe (Sutherland SK)
- Art Jones (Bangor SK)
- Saskatoon SK's Cliff Schmautz,
older brother of Bruin Bobby Schmautz
- Jim McLeod (Thunder Bay ON)
- Don Head (Mount Denis ON)
- Gerry Goyer (Belleville ON)
- Pat "Hopalong" Hannigan (Timmins ON)
As you see, there is a long history of Canadians coming to Portland to work!

- Portland Winter Hawks
Western Hockey League 1976-present
Soon after Oilers professional ice hockey arrived in Edmonton, the Oil Kings, the longtime junior team,
left the 'Chuck in 1976, becoming the Portland Winter Hawks.
They won Memorial Cup championships in 1983 and 1998, and were WHL finalists in 2001. They play at the
Memorial Coliseum and the
Rose Garden.
The Winter Hawks have supplied many players to NHL teams (see sidebar).
