Thursday 11 aug 05
Portland:

For the second night in a row, the Beavers bats were silenced by good pitching. Brian Sweeney was the victim of the power failure, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 8 but still taking the loss. Sean Burroughs had the only extra base hit, a double, for the Beavers and Paul McAnulty scored the only run.

Mobile:

no game scheduled

Lake Elsinore:

The Storm continued their losing ways despite a solid effort from Luke Steidlmayer. He went six innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. The Storm threatened in the second as Colt Morton connected with his 16th homer and Jorden Pickens doubled and scored on Bonvechio's single but Lancaster pitcher, Chico, wiggled out of the jam and was never seriously threatened again.

Ft Wayne:

2b Sean Kazmar had two hits, including a homer, but the Wizards could must just one other hit, a single by Tom Vincent, in 12 innings as South Bend scored for a 2-1 win. The lack of support wasted a strong effort by Matt Ekstrom(13-3 3.14) who went 8 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits.

Eugene(rookie)

Will Venable had 3 hits and the only rbi while Chase Headley chipped in 2 hits in the 9-1 loss to Everrett. The Em's could put just one run across despite 9 hits and 7 walks. Everrett pitchers were more cautious with Seth Johnston after his offensive outburst on Wed, he was 1 for 3 with 2 walks.

Arizona(rookie)

Wednesday's results:

The Cubs rookies terrorized 4 Padres pitchers to the tune of 18 hits and 15 runs. Meanwhile, Padres hitters just couldnt seem to string anything together. Kyle Blanks was hitless with a walk and 2 strikeouts in 4 plate appearances. Most of the offense was provided by less heralded rookies, Chad Steiner 3b(3 for 4, 2r, rbi) and Willy Crafort rf(2 for 3 bb, run).

Prospect notes 10 Aug 05
Portland

Tim Stauffer has struggled since being sent back down from the Padres. The same early inning problems that plagued him in the majors were evident again as he gave up 5 first inning runs and then settled down to pitch solidly through the 5th, giving up just one more run.

Burroughs, Barfield, McAnulty, Trzesniak and Knott were held hitless.

Mobile:

Cesar Carrillo went 5 solid innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 7. He appeared well on his way to another win and left the game leading 5-2 but was not involved in the decision as the bullpen could not hold the lead.

Greg Kottaras doubled, walked and drove in 3 runs.

Lake Elsinore:

Adam Eaton allowed one hit in a 3 inning rehab start, walking two and striking out 2. Rudy Seanez followed Adam and was not effective. Rudy gave up 3 hits(2 hrs) and 4 earned runs in just an inning of work to take the loss.

Chris Kolkhorst was 2 for 3, including a triple, walked twice and scored a run to lead the offense. Brett Dowdy also had two hits.

Ft Wayne had no game scheduled:

Eugene:

Yesterday we were talking about some of the draft picks struggling offensively. It seems that Seth Johnston got the message. Seth was 3 for 5 with 2 homers, 3 runs scored and 8 rbi.

Nick Hundley had a 4 for 5 day with a double and 3 runs scored.

While Ems hitters were feasting on Everrett pitching, Brenton Carter(3-2 2.13) was pitching well, allowing just one hit(a solo homer) in 6 innings.

Whats wrong with the Padres?
June swoon? Here are some numbers to consider:

May offensive stats: .289/.364/.446/.810 runs per game scored: 5.71
pitching stats: era: 4.11, whip 1.26 runs per game allowed: 4.17

June offensive stats: .230/.281/.320/.600 runs per game scored: 2.46
pitching stats: era 4.42, whip 1.48 runs per game allowed: 5.07

I suppose the question is: Are the Padres scoring fewer runs because we are always so far behind, or are we allowing more runs because our pitchers are trying to be more perfect?

Which came first: The chicken or the egg?

Padres on the road
Which Jake Peavy will show up today? In his last two starts, Jake has been, well, UnJakelike. Whether its due to illness or fatigue is unknown but is he OK now? This start, I would say is crucial. We need Jake to show that he is still capable of dominating on the field so that everything else will fall into place.
