Welcome. This is my compilation of interesting records, statistics and factoids about the NCAA Tournament. For the most part, what I have is broken down into four areas - team numbers, conference numbers, seeding numbers and coaches numbers.

Because the tournament has changed so much over the years, what you will find in the latter sections of this page is reflective of only the last two decades. Multi-representation of conferences didn't occur until the 1980s, for example. The seeding process, likewise, wasn't set into place until 1979, and that went through some changes in the first few years.

Basically, the tournament as we know it today was born in 1985 when the bracket expanded to 64 teams. The first section, however, does take the complete history of the tournament into account. That includes all-time team numbers - most titles, most appearances, best & worst winning percentage, etc.

It should be pointed out, however, that while a trip to the Final Four in 1945 is recorded just the same as a trip to the Final Four in 1985, the actual accomplishment is much different because of how the tournament has changed. Specifically, the change which affects compilings such as this is the number of teams - here is a look at how the number of teams in the tournament has grown over the years:

1939-1950: 8 teams
1951-1952: 16 teams
1953-1974: flucuated between 22-25 teams
1975-1978: 32 teams
1979: 40 teams
1980-1982: 48 teams
1983: 52 teams
1984: 53 teams
1985-2000: 64 teams

As you can see, in the early years only eight teams were invited to the tournament, which meant that to reach the Final Four a team only had to win one game and only had to win three games to capture the title. That is quite a bit different from today's tournament, where a team must string together four wins to reach the Final Four. Another change which effects compilings such as this is the fact that the tournament no longer uses consolation games. From 1946-81, the two losers in the Final Four games played in a national third place game. The section of all-time Final Four wins and records includes all games played, even consolation games. Also, each region held consolation games to determine regional third place teams until 1976. All-time team records include those games as well.

Feel free to email me at petey42869@aol.com with any comments, suggestions or corrections. You can also email me if you have an opinion about my poll question - the greatest team who didn't win a title. Thanks for visiting and be sure to pass this page along to anyone else who might find it interesting.
