Pictures of Moose's near Perfect Game---Recap

Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees has been named the American League Player of the Week for August 27-September 2, after tossing a near-perfect game on Sunday night.

Mussina recorded victories in both of his starts during the week, including the complete game one-hit shutout against Boston at Fenway Park on Sunday. The game was the fourth one-hitter of Mussina's career and the second time he took a perfect game into the ninth (vs. Cleveland on May 30, 1997). The Yankees' right-hander did not allow a run in 17 innings pitched during the week, surrendering only seven hits and two walks to go along with a league-high 19 strikeouts. This is the second time this season that Mussina has been honored as the AL Player of the Week, as he shared the award with Toronto's Raul Mondesi for the week of April 30-May 6.

Eric Chavez of the Oakland Athletics was the runner-up after batting .375 (9-for-24) with three homers and an AL-high 13 RBIs. Carlos Febles (.348, 5 HR, 23 TB) of the Kansas City Royals, Mark Mulder (2-0, 1.59 ERA, 12 SO) of the Athletics, Rafael Palmeiro (.450, 3 HR, 10 RBIs) of the Texas Rangers and Royce Clayton (.556, 8 R, 6 RBIs) and Chris Singleton (.450, 2 HR, 7 RBIs) of the Chicago White Sox were also considered for the weekly honor.

Mussina will receive an engraved timepiece from The Bulova Corporation to commemorate his Player of the Week performance.
