Penny's complete game shutout puts Fish in First
Brad Penny, following in Ryan Dempster's and A.J. Burnett's footsteps, had an amazing start on Thursday, pitching a complete game shoutout while giving up only four hits, guiding the Marlins to a 1-0 victory which put the team on top of the NL East with a .667 winning percentage. The Fish's lone run came on Derrek Lee's third homer in three games (putting him on pace for 162 roundtrippers...).

The Marlins claimed shortstop Wilson Valdez, 23, off waivers from the Montreal Expos. Regarded as an outstanding defensive player, Valdez batted .251 with 21 doubles, two home runs, 30 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 123 games last season between two Class-A affiliates. He became expendable to the Expos when it was revealed this winter that the Dominican was two years older than he previously claimed. Article/Sun-Sentinel; Photo/MLB

tavarez
David Polakoff - Antonio Alfonseca, the only remaining player on the roster to have been in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series and stay with the team, hasbeen traded to the Chicago Cubs along with Matt Clement. In return, the Fish got 3 pitchers (Julian Tavarez, Jose Cueto and Dontrelle Willis) and a catcher (Ryan Jorgensen). Of the four, only Tavarez will start the year in the bigs. Tavarez, who was 10-9 with a 4.52 ERA, can start and relieve, but is expected to open the season as the number four starter. ***TALK ABOUT THIS ON OUR MESSAGE BOARD!*** Photo illustration ©marlinsrule.net

smith
David Polakoff - The Marlins, on Monday, traded pitcher Chuck Smith to the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later and cash considerations. Smith, who was the Marlins' rookie of the year in 2000, was expected to be the number two starter for the 2001 season before an injury kept him out for a good part of the season. Smith was in competition with Michel Tejera and Kevin Olsen for the final bullpen spot this spring. Photo/MLB

Raines
Credit ESPN.com - Tim Raines, hoping to play his 23rd season in the major leagues, signed a minor league contract Feb. 18 with the Marlins and was invited to spring training. Raines, 42, came back from a shoulder injury last season and batted .303 with one home run and nine RBI in 51 games for Montreal and Baltimore. "He did a terrific job coming off the bench in a pinch-hit role," said Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest, who was with Montreal last year. "He's a great guy to have in the clubhouse and a veteran presence." The Marlins will look at the seven-time All-Star outfielder mostly as a pinch-hitter, Beinfest said. Florida also signed outfielder Mark Smith to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Smith hit .242 in 80 games last year for Montreal.
