Summer 2011

Over the summer, whenever I see someone with ties to the JC world, I'll post the highlights on this page.

This summer it was almost exclusively the four JC Shootouts and the Say No Classic, America's premier college summer league. I also stopped by the Drew League for a day's worth of playoff games, and at the "instant classic" game 2 of the championship series of the venerable SF Pro-Am league at historic Kezar Pavilion.

The four JC exposure events each get their own pages (links are at the bottom of the page).

Sunday, October 9th - Drew League vs. Goodman League, LB Pyramid:

There was a small JC presence at one of the few opportunities to see NBA players in action these days as the Drew League all-stars avenged a loss earlier this summer to the Goodman League of Baltimore, 151-144, Sunday night at the Pyramid in Long Beach.

PG Marcus Banks (Southern Idaho JC/UNLV/New Orleans Hornets) had 8 pts, 3 rebs and 2 asts off the bench for the victorious Drew League. SG Dominique Johnson (SW Tennessee/Azusa Pacific/NBDL) played briefly for the Goodman League but did not score. And PG Antonio Biglow (Mt. San Antonio/Montana State), the 2010-11 JCHoops.com SoCal Player of the Year, was seen mingling on the floor before the game and received a shout-out from the MC during the 4th quarter.

SF James Harden (Artesia HS/Arizona State/Oklahoma Thunder) led the Drew League to the win with 47 pts, 13 rebs, 7 asts and 9 steals in a superb all-around performance. SG Nick Young (Cleveland HS/USC/Washington Wizards) and SF Matt Barnes (UCLA/Los Angeles Lakers) each had 20 pts, and PG Brandon Jennings (Dominguez HS/Oak Hill Academy/Italy/Milwaukee Bucks) had 19 pts, 10 asts and 3 steals.

For the Goodman League. PG John Wall (Kentucky/Washington Wizards) had 55 pts, 11 rebs and 4 asts, and two-time NBA scoring champion SF Kevin Durant (Texas/Oklahoma Thunder) had 50 pts. SG Rudy Gay (Connecticut/Memphis Grizzlies) had 20 pts and 16 rebs, and SF Donte Greene (Syracuse/Sacramento Kings) had 15 pts and 14 rebs.

Tuesday, August 9th - San Francisco Pro-Am @ Kezar Pavilion:

SG Cardell Butler (Southern Idaho/Utah State) had 18 pts and Ctr Michael Travis (CC San Francisco/Jackson State) had 15 but it wasn't quite enough as Dream Team fell, 115-111, in overtime in the second and final game of the championship series of the San Francisco Pro-Am.

The game was truly a classic, among the most memorable in the 33-year history of the SF Pro-Am.

PG Kiwi Gardner (entering Providence) had 40 pts, 11 rebs, 6 asts and 6 steals for Dream Team, which was playing without Matt Barnes of the Lakers (he was suspended for punching an opponent in the semifinals).

That, plus Butler's 18 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts and 5 steals plus Travis' 15 pts, 19 rebs and 3 blocked shots would have been enough for a win most nights. Especially when high school standout SF Aaron Gordon (Mitty HS) and his 19 pts, 13 rebs and 4 asts are thrown in.

But PF Wendell McKines (New Mexico State) poured in an astounding 53 points for Bay Pride, which won the game and its first championship since 2001 with a 2-game sweep.

Neither team led by more than ten points at any point in the game. Dream Team led, 46-43, at halftime and pushed its advantage to 59-49 early in the second half. Bay Pride rallied to take a 67-65 lead later in the quarter, however, and led by six points at 78-72 midway through the fourth quarter.

Bay Pride held a 96-93 lead late in regulation, but SG Will Walker (Ohlone/Georgetown KY) hit a 3-pointer to tie the score. Bay Pride had one last chance to win it in regulation, but Walker stole an inbounds pass in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.

In the extra time, however, Bay Pride finally pulled away for the win. The victory gave Bay Pride its 5th SF Pro-Am title. Its first three championship teams - 1992, 1995 and 1996 - were led by undoubtedly the most famous player in the history of the SF Pro-Am, future Hall of Fame PG Jason Kidd.

SF Jourdan De Munyck (Chabot/Prairie View A&M) started for the champion Pride and had 4 pts, 4 asts and a steal. Ctr Mario Flaherty (Skyline/Houston Baptist) came off the bench for 4 pts and 8 rebs.

PF Chris Edwards (Los Medanos/Notre Dame de Namur) started for Dream Team and had 7 pts and 6 rebs. Walker finished with 12 pts, 2 asts and 2 steals, all of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime. SF Trevon King (CC San Francisco) also came off the bench for Dream Team and didn't score but had 3 rebs, an assist and a steal.

I've been following the SF Pro-Am - closely when I lived in SF, intermittently since 2001 - and have never heard of a game quite like this. The last 50-point game I can recall hearing about was by Justin Love (Canada/St. Louis) in about 1998, and I don't remember any game with a 50-point scorer and a 40-point scorer...even in the regular season, let alone a championship round game!

Here is the box score from this historic game, one of the most memorable in the illustrious history of the San Francisco Pro-Am:

PG Larry Dew (Victor Valley/Chaffey/Cal Baptist) came off the bench and had 2 pts and 1 ast. SG Ryan Abraham (Glendale/LA Valley/Hawaii-Hilo also saw brief action but did not score.

In the day's first game, SG J.R. Lewis (LA Trade Tech/Fresno Pacific) had 34 pts, including 4 threes, plus 6 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals for Pro Training in a 105-96 loss to defending champion LA Unified.

SF Lamar Gayle (Cerritos) had 15 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts and 5 steals, and PF Kevin Lewis (Compton/Wyoming) had 10 pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals for Pro Training, which fell behind by 20 points in the first half but trimmed the deficit to single digits for most of the second half.

In the day's final game, NBA veteran PG Marcus Banks (Dixie/UNLV) had 32 pts, 6 asts and 2 steals to lead Team COA to an 89-84 win over Hank's Cheaters II.

Team COA built a 7-point lead after the first quarter, but the Cheaters rallied to tie the score on a basket by Ctr Donald Lee (Pierce/CS Bakersfield) that made it 35-35 midway through the second quarter. COA then went back in front to lead by 7 at the half and by 11 at the end of the third quarter.

COA held a 15-point lead with less than three minutes left, but the Cheaters made a final frantic comeback to cut the deficit to three points in the final seconds. Long Beach State standout Caspar Ware missed a would-be game-tying 3-pointer, however, and Banks grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made a pair of free throws with 6.0 seconds left to clinch the win for COA.

SG Anthony Davis (LA City/Iowa State) had 6 pts, 5 asts and 2 steals, and SF Ivan Jackson (LA Southwest/Cal State LA) came off the bench - actually, he was the only substitute to play for COA - and had 2 pts, 2 rebs, an assist, a block and a steal.

Hank's Top Prospects jumped out to 30-point halftime lead, sending the game to a running clock with about three minutes left in the second quarter. The win keeps them within striking distance of one of the top two seeds entering the playoffs.

Ctr Kaimyn Pruitt (Mt. SAC/Adams State) came off the bench for 2 pts, 3 rebs, a block and a steal. SF Steven Mallory (Mt. SAC) came off the bench for 4 pts, 3 rebs and an assist.

Saturday, July 16th - Say No Classic @ Cal Poly Pomona

In what might have been the best game ever played in the Say No's IE Division, Team Takeover saw an 18-point lead disappear but recovered in time to post a 92-90 overtime victory over CABC in a showdown between two teams tied in the loss column for first place in the division.

Despite ending up with the loss, it was a remarkable comeback by CABC. Just 7 points away from invoking the dreaded running-clock rule early in the second half, CABC rallied to tie the game on a pair of free throws by SF Durrell Norman (Antelope Valley/Irvine Valley/Northern Arizona) with just under three minutes left and actually took an 85-83 lead with 1:58 left before finally falling in OT.
