Summer 2010

Over the summer, whenever I see someone with ties to the JC world, I'll post the highlights on this page.

This summer began early this year with an NBDL game in March. Then there were a couple of trips to Thousand Oaks for the IBL Lightning. It continued with a trip to San Francisco for a couple nights at the venerable SF Pro-Am league at historic Kezar Pavilion, and I returned in August for a playoff game there.

And as always there was America's premier college summer league, the Say No Classic, where JC players compete alongside D-1, D-2 and NAIA players from all over Southern California.

There were three JC exposure events as well, and they each get their own pages (links are at the bottom of the page).

----------

Thursday, August 5 (SF Pro-Am @ Kezar Pavilion, San Francisco

SF Johnny Dukes (San Bernardino Valley/San Francisco/Turkey), SF Eryk Thomas (Santa Rosa/E Tennessee State/Finland) and SG Tyler Tiedeman (Santa Rosa/Boise State/Spain) each scored in double figures to lead SF City to an 88-77 win over South Bay in the SF Pro-Am Semifinal.

Dukes scored seven straight points in the first quarter, after South Bay held a short 14-11 lead, and SF City led the rest of the way. SF City seemed in control early in the 4th quarter with a 21-point lead at 81-60, but South Bay then went on a 17-0 run to cut the margin to four points at 81-77. That would be as close as South Bay would get, however, and SF City finished the game with a 7-0 spurt to earn a berth in the Finals.

Dukes finished with 15 pts, 6 rebs and 2 steals. Thomas had 13 pts, 6 rebs and 3 steals, and Tiedeman had 13 pts and 6 asts, the latter total tying for game-high. PG Marquel Hoskins (Reedley/San Francisco State) also played briefly for the winners but did not score.

Sunday, July 18 (Say No Classic @ HAX, Hawthorne)

PG Antonio Biglow (Mt. San Antonio) had a team-high 16 pts to lead Hank's Top Prospects to a 68-56 win over Salvatori's Shooters in the showdown for the regular season championship of the Say No Classic at the HAX.

Both teams entered with identical 6-1 records, finishing the regular season with a winner-take-all affair to begin the final day of the regular season.

Hank's Top Prospects built a 26-17 lead early in the second quarter, only to see Salvatori's Shooters narrow the gap to a single point at 30-29 less than a minute into the second half after consecutive baskets by UCLA's Reeves Nelson.

But Hank's Top Prospects never surrendered the lead. Hank's defense carried the day, with 7 steals in the third quarter alone and 19 in the game. Incoming Nevada freshman Deonte Burton had one steal & lay-up and PG Steven Bennett (Citrus/Chaminade) had another as Hank's Top Prosects pushed its lead back to nine points at 42-33. A 3-pointer by Arizona' Derrick Williams pushed Hank's lead to ten at 50-40 after three quarters.

In the final period, Hank's Top Prospects extended its lead to as many as 16 points at 58-42 thanks largely to SG Darnell Porter (Fullerton/South Carolina State). First he stole the ball, which led to a lay-up by Ctr Kaimyn Pruitt (Mt. San Antonio). Then he scored after a pass from Williams to make it 58-42 with 6:11 left in the game.

The closest Salvatori's Shooters got after that was nine points after a putback basket by UCLA's Tyler Honeycutt that made it 65-56 with 35.2 seconds remaining. Biglow made one free throw with 17.3 seconds left to make it 66-56; he missed the second free throw, but Porter scored on the putback to close out the scoring and make it 68-56.

Biglow's 16 pts led the winners. Porter had 9 pts and 7 rebs, and Pruitt had 7 pts, 9 rebs and 4 asts. Bennett came off the bench and had 4 pts, 2 asts and 4 steals. SF Steven Mallory (Mt. San Antonio) saw brief action but did not score.

For Salvatori's Shooters, who will be the #2 seed from the LA division in the upcoming playoffs, PG Lazeric Jones (John Logan IL/UCLA) had 7 pts and 3 asts, and SG DaShawn Gomez (Antelope Valley) had 3 pts and 5 rebs. SF Shelton Boykin (Antelope Valley) came off the bench and had 4 pts.

In other action, SG Vernon Teel (Chipola/Loyola-Marymount) had 21 pts, 6 rebs and 7 asts to keep Salvatori's Future Stars' playoff hopes alive with a 73-57 win over Team Aloha.

The Future Stars led wire to wire, aided by an 8-0 head start per league rules since Team Aloha didn't have five players available at the scheduled start of the game. They eventually fielded a team, mostly of conscripts, but Salvatori's Future Stars were never really threatened.

The playoff picture became more complicated less than three hours later, however, when West Coast Hoops led wire to wire in a 61-47 win over Salvatori's Spirit. That, plus a loss by Hank's Toros in the day's final game, created a five-way tie for third place. The tie-breakers will be sorted out in the next few days, determining not only the third through sixth seeds but also determining which of the five teams will not make the playoffs at all.

West Coast Hoops began its game with a 12-0 lead due to the tardiness of Salvatori's Spirit (a late-arriving team is penalized two points for every minute they are late). By halftime, the margin was 15 and the lead passed 25 early in the fourth quarter, resulting in a running clock the rest of the way.

PG Josh Gordon (West LA/Texas A&M-Commerce) had 12 pts for the winners, and SF Kris Lawrie (El Camino/Colorado State-Pueblo) had 11 pts and 3 steals. Ctr Pierre Prince (LA Valley), newly signed to Colorado State-Pueblo, had a solid game with 9 pts, 7 rebs and 3 blocked shots. PF Bryant Crowder (Santa Monica), recently signed to San Diego State, had 5 pts, 3 rebs and 2 blocks, and SG Cameron Edison (Grays Harbor CC) had 4 pts and 4 rebs. PF Tyrell Chandler (Santa Monica) came off the bench and achieved a statistical rarity: a quintuple-single (1 point, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 block & 1 steal).

Also contributing to the five-way tie for third was CABC's dramatic 74-73 win over Hank's Toros, a team of players from Cal State Dominguez Hills, thanks to an outstanding defensive play by SF Johnel Gray (Saddleback) in the final game of the day.

In a game that was closely-contested throughout, CABC took a 71-70 lead on a 3-point play with 5.7 seconds left. That, however, left plenty of time for Hank's Toros to score, and on the restart the ball went to PG Marquintice Davis (Bakersfield/SD City), who was guarded by Gray.

As the clock wound down, David spun and attempted a jumper that could have won the game for the Toros. But Gray partially blocked the shot, which bounced off the backboard. Then Gray also corralled the rebound, holding the ball as the final horn sounded and CABC had the win.

PG Phillip Zarif (Saddleback) had 10 pts, 5 asts and 2 steals for the winners, and Gray added 7 pts, 2 rebs, 2 asts and one big blocked shot. SF Jason McMillan (Irvine Valley) had 4 pts and 2 asts. SF Jake Fedro (Orange Coast) saw brief action but did not play.

For the Toros, Davis had 16 pts and a game-high 8 asts. SF Van Girard (Cerritos) had 10 pts and a team-high 8 rebs, and PG Joey Knox (El Camino) came off the bench and added 2 pts and 2 asts.

In the day's other game, Ctr DeWayne Dedmon (Antelope Valley/USC) had 4 pts, 9 rebs and 2 blocked shots as Salvatori's Squad edged Carl's Future Stars, 74-73.

Dedmon had a solid overall performance, but he just avoided a rather embarrassing moment at the end of the game. USC's Bryce Jones had given Salvatori's Squad a 74-73 lead with a pair of free throws in the final minute, and that's where things still stood as the clock wound down to the final seconds.

With the clock approaching zero, Donley Minor of the Future Stars attempted a jumper that bounced high off the heel of the rim. As the ball came back towards the basket, Dedmon grabbed it out of mid-air, either above or just outside the cylinder. After a brief conference, game officials ruled there was no interference on Dedmon, allowing Salvatori's Squad to hold on for the 74-73 win.

SF DeJon Prescott (LA Harbor/Cal Baptist) had 5 pts, 3 rebs and 3 asts for the Future Stars. SG Alan Mitchell (LA Southwest) had 4 pts, 3 rebs and 3 asts. PF Malcolm Collins (LA Pierce) did not score but grabbed 8 rebs and added 3 asts and 3 steals.

Saturday, July 17(Say No Classic @ Cal Poly Pomona)

PF Kwame Alexander (Irvine Valley) had 17 pts and PG Corey Caston (Pasadena) had 11 pts, 5 asts and 2 steals to lead Hank’s Coyotes, a team of players from Cal State San Bernardino, to a 74-61 win over West Coast Academy, clinching a playoff berth and keeping the Coyotes in contention for the #1 seed in the Inland Empire divison.

Hank’s Coyotes led virtually wire to wire, opening a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and leading by as many as 14 points at 40-26 late in the first half. West Coast Academy rallied to within two points late in the third quarter and trailed by four entering the final period, but never quite caught up. A fast break lay-up by PG Nate Roth (San Bernardino Valley) pushed the Coyotes’ lead back to double figures at 55-45 with just under six minutes left, and a basket by Caston afer a steal by SG Aaron Hill (Cerritos) at midcourt pushed the margin to 15 at 62-47.

SF Robbie Robinson (Riverside) had 10 pts and 6 rebs for the winners, and Roth came off the bench for 8 pts, 2 asts and 2 steals. Hill and SG Sidney Hall (San Bernardino Valley) each had 6 pts; Hill also had 6 asts and 2 steals for the Coyotes, who finish the regular season at 6-2 and tied for second place in the IE division, a half-game behind SoCal Elite.

For West Coast Academy, PF DeAndre Haskins (Citrus/Chaminade) led all scorers with 18 pts. PG Hakeem Washington (Citrus) had 9 pts, 4 asts and 2 blocked shots, while Ctr Travis Wilson (SD City) had 7 pts, 5 rebs and 3 steals. SG Donte Archie (Citrus) had 6 pts and 3 asts. SF Jamal Brown (Portland CC) had 3 pts, 2 asts and 2 blocks, and PG Jeremy Pope (Cerritos) had 2 pts and 3 asts.

In the day’s second game, SG Darren Moore (Citrus/UC Irvine) had 16 pts, 4 rebs, 2 blocks and 3 steals to help SoCal Elite improve its record to 6-1 with a 78-44 thrashing of the Golden Eagles. SF Durrell Norman (Antelope Valley/Irvine Valley) came off the bench and had 8 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts and 2 blocks for the winners, who moved into first place with the win and the loss later in the afternoon by Salvatori’s No Shnacks. PF Billy Azizi (Saddleback/Vanguard) had 5 pts and 4 rebs.

For the Golden Eagles, a team of players from La Sierra University, PG Aaron Snyder (Riverside) had 4 pts, 3 asts and 2 steals. SF Isaac Waters (Imperial Valley) had 2 pts and 4 rebs.

The next game saw the Cougars, a team of players from Azusa Pacific University, easily top the Carl’s Jr. Superstars, a team of players from Cal Poly Pomona, 66-39.

Ctr DeAngelo Riley (SW Tennessee) led all scorers with 21 pts and added 6 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals. PF Reggie Owens (SW Tennessee) had 10 pts, 8 rebs and 4 asts for the winners.

The next game was the shocker of the afternoon as Reality Approach not only kept its playoff hopes alive but toppled Salvatori’s No Shnacks from the top seed with a 77-75 upset victory.

No Shnacks entered the game 6-1, and would have clinched the top seed with a win. And No Shnacks started out well enough, taking a 23-19 lead after one quarter and leading by seven, 46-39, at the half.

But then Reality Approach rallied, taking a 49-48 lead midway through the third quarter. The lead went back and forth the rest of that quarter, which ended in a 56-56 tie.

When the fourth quarter began, Reality Approach went back into the lead, and though it was close the rest of the way No Shnacks never regained the lead. Reality Approach built a 74-68 lead with 29 seconds left, and though No Shnacks got within two points with four seconds left, held that lead the rest of the way for the win.

SG Lawrence Robinson started for Reality Approach and had 11 pts. PG Rashad Bias (Mt. San Antonio) also started and had 7 pts, 6 rebs and 6 asts. Ctr Ken Hicks (Chaffey/Southern) came off the bench and had 4 pts and 2 rebs.

For No Shnacks, SG Tre Brewer (Fullerton/San Bernardino Valley/Youngstown State) had 14 pts and a game-high 7 asts. PF Davie Champagnie (Riverside) had 6 pts and 6 asts, and SG Nick Bennett (Antelope Valley) had 6 pts off the bench. PG Trone Jackson (Chaffey/Livingstone) had 4 pts, 3 asts and 3 steals, and Ctr Joshua “Byrd” Rayne (Fullerton) had 4 pts, 6 rebs and 3 asts.

In the day’s finale, SG Everett Brown (Santa Monica) had 12 pts and Ctr DeShawn Stephens (Santa Monica) had 11 pts and 11 rebs to lift S & P to a playoff berth-clinching 60-56 win over Say No.

S & P trailed by seven points early in the fourth quarter, but rallied behind four players from Santa Monica. PG Eric Bell dished out six of his game-high 10 asts in the final quarter, and Brown scored six of his 12 points in the final period.

Still, it came down to the final four seconds and S & P holding a 58-56 lead, and PF Matt Sinclair went to the foul line with a chance to clinch the win. Despite making just 1 of 4 free throw tries to that point, Matt did his best vintage Shaq impression (“I make them when I need them”), rattling home the first and swishing the second to make it 60-56 and clinch the win and the playoff berth.

Sinclair finished with 9 pts and 8 rebs for the winners. Bell had 7 pts, 10 asts and 2 steals. SF Arnette Hollis (Santa Monica) came off the bench and had 2 pts and SF Nick Turner (Chaffey/Minot State) also saw brief action and scored a point.

For Say No, which had no substitutes and, really, no guards, it was an inspired effort to stay so close. PF Shang Ping (Illinois Central/Nebraska/Emporia State) had 21 pts, 12 rebs and 5 asts in a strong overall performance, and Ctr Tom Granado (Citrus/Concordia) also had a double-double with 16 pts, 14 rebs and 4 asts. SG Kenny McGrath (Victor Valley/Sterling) had 9 pts and 6 rebs while SF Wing Tseung (Fullerton) had 6 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts, 3 blocks and 2 steals, as both played out of position (both are really power forwards). Swing Chuang (Fullerton), pressed into service as the point guard (he’s really a small forward) had 4 pts, 7 rebs and 3 asts.

Sunday, June 27 (Say No Classic @ HAX, Hawthorne)

SG Van Girard (Cerritos) had 22 pts and 9 rebs as Hank's Toros, a team of players from Cal State Dominguez Hills, edged Power Balance, 67-65, in the first game of the day.

Hank's Toros started the game on a 17-4 run, helped by the late arrival of two of Power Balance's top players including SF Tristan Wilson (Yuba/Long Beach State). But once Wilson and LB State guard Larry Anderson arrived, Power Balance cut into the margin and trailed by just a point at 46-45 late in the third quarter.

Hank's Toros stretched the lead back to eight points at 55-47 with 4:28 left, but Power Balance again rallied, cutting the deficit to just a point at 58-57 late in the game. A basket by Girard helped keep the Toros in control, however, and a pair of free throws by PF Mike Cox (Fullerton) seemed to put the Toros in good shape with a 62-57 lead with 50.4 seconds left.

Power Balance again rallied, but it was too little too late. SF Rob Summers (LA Trade Tech/Cal Poly Pomona) scored on a putback to get Power Balance within a point at 66-65, and as soon as the ball was inbounded Power Balance fouled Girard, sending him to the line with one second left. He made one free throw to make it 67-65. Power Balance called timeout to set up one final play but the inbounds pass was deflected and there never was a final shot attempt.

In addition to Girard, standouts for Hank's Toros included PG Marquintice Davis (Bakersfield/SD City), who had 8 pts and 5 asts, and Cox, who had 6 pts, 3 asts and 3 blocked shots.

For Power Balance, Wilson had 16 pts and 3 asts, and Summers added 11 pts, 6 rebs and 3 steals. SG Gil Mathieu (Siskiyous) started and had 4 pts. Ctr Matt DeWaal (S.Idaho/Oxnard) also started and had one point and 3 rebs.

In the second game of the day, PG Josh Gordon (West LA/Texas A&M-Commerce) had 13 pts and 9 asts, and Ctr Bryant Crowder (Santa Monica) had 12 pts, including a couple of high-flying dunks, and 5 rebs as West Coast Hoops defeated Salvatori’s Squad, 67-57.

West Coast Hoops jumped out to a 13-2 lead early in the game as Salvatori’s Squad struggled to score, finally getting its first field goal of the game on a jumper by Ctr DeWayne Dedmon (Antelope Valley/USC) late in the quarter. West Coast Hoops remained in the lead the rest of the way, holding an 8-point lead at 29-21 at halftime before pushing the margin to 17 at 49-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Salvatori’s Squad cut the deficit to nine points at 53-44 early in the fourth quarter, but a pair of Crowder dunks on breakaways put to rest any thoughts of a Salvatori comeback.

SG Cameron Edison (Grays Harbor CC) also started for the winners and had 13 pts. SF Kris Lawrie (El Camino/Colorado St-Pueblo) had 4 pts and 3 rebs, and Ctr Pierre Prince (LA Valley) came off the bench for 2 pts and 2 blocked shots.

For Salvatori’s Squad, Ctr Daquan Brown (Barstow) had 5 pts and 4 rebs, and Dedmon came off the bench for 2 pts and 6 rebs.

In the next game, PG Mike Butler (LA Southwest) broke a 60-all tie with a 3-pointer to help Sinclair’s Bruins to a 70-63 win over CABC.

CABC, led by Mychal Thompson of Pepperdine, son of longtime LA Laker Mychal Thompson, led most of the game and had an 11-point advantage at 20-9 late in the first quarter. The Bruins closed to within four points at 34-30 late in the first half, and took a 42-39 lead late in the third quarter. The score was tied at 47 after three quarters and was tied again at 60 after a Thompson free throw with 2:30 remaining.

That’s when Butler hit the key 3-pointer, and the Bruins led the rest of the way. Butler finished the game with 9 pts and 3 asts.

For CABC, PG Phillip Zarif (Saddleback) had 7 pts, 4 rebs and 3 asts. SF Jake Fedro (Orange Coast) also played briefly but did not score. Thompson posted game-highs of 27 pts and 12 rebs.

In the next game, Antelope Valley College was on full display as SF Shelton Boykin had 22 pts, PG DeShawn Gomez had 7 asts and Ctr George McGrew had 4 pts and 6 asts in a 71-29 pummeling by Salvatori’s Shooters over Carl’s Jr. Future Stars.

Salvatori’s Shooters started the game on a 4-0 spurt. Carl’s Jr. overcame that deficit to tie the game 4-4, but then the Shooters scored the game’s next eight points to lead, 12-4, and Carl’s Jr. never ralled from that deficit. It was 22-8 after one quarter and the game went to a running clock after UCLA standout Tyler Honeycutt scored on a third-chance putback to make it 33-8 midway through the second quarter, at which point the rout was officially on.

Also on display was PG Lazeric Jones, who is expected to be UCLA’s starting point guard next season. The graduate of John Logan JC in Illinois came off the bench for 8 pts and 4 asts for the winners.

For Carl’s Jr., SF Malcolm Collins (LA Pierce) and SF Dejon Prescott (LA Harbor/Cal Baptist) both played and each scored 2 pts.

In the day’s finale, SF Darnell Porter (Fullerton/South Carolina State) had 12 pts and PF Kaimyn Pruitt (Mt. San Antonio) had 10 pts and 8 rebs as Hank’s Top Prospects throttled Salvatori’s Spirit, 70-39.

Hank’s Top Prospects started the game with a 19-4 run, only to see the Spirit score the game’s next 10 points to seemingly make a contest of it. That, however, would be the extent of the Spirit’s rally, and Hank’s Top Prospects pushed the lead back to ten points at 36-26 at the half. Then in the second half, Hank’s Top Prospects outscored the Spirit, 34-13 to run away for the 31-point victory.

PG Antonio Biglow (Mt. San Antonio) started for the winners and had 7 pts, 4 asts and 3 steals. SF Larry DeHughes (Compton/Fullerton/CS San Bernardino) had 5 pts and PF Kevin McDowell (LA Trade Tech) had 4 pts and 4 rebs. PG Steven Bennett (Citrus/Chaminade) also played but did not score.

For Salvatori’s Spirit, PG DeAndre Myles (Saddleback) came off the bench and had 7 pts and 4 rebs. Ctr Rashad Stuckey (Oxnard) had 4 pts and 3 rebs.

Saturday, June 26 (Say No Classic @ Cal Poly Pomona)

PG Perry Webster (Irvine Valley/Saddleback/CS Fullerton), Ctr DeShawn Stephens (Santa Monica) and SG Everett Brown (Santa Monica) led S & P to an emphatic 62-43 win over a team featuring 2010 NCAA Division II champions Cal Poly Pomona in the first game of the day.

S & P jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter, and then broke the game open to lead by 26 points at halftime and was never headed by Carl's Jr. Superstars.

Brown led the winners with 14 pts, Stephens had a double-double with 10 pts, 10 rebs and 4 blocks, and Webster, who led Saddleback to the 2010 JC California state championship, just missed a double-double with 10 pts, 9 asts and 2 steals.

PF Matt Sinclair (Santa Monica) also started for S & P and chipped in with 4 pts and 7 rebs. PG Eric Bell (Santa Monica) came off the bench and did not score but had 4 asts. PG Marques McAlpin (Chaffey) saw brief action as well.

In the next game, PG Trone Jackson (Chaffey) had 12 pts and 4 asts as Salvatori's No Shnacks overcame a slow start to post a 67-58 win over Say No.

Say No started the game on a 6-0 spurt and led, 16-8, midway through the first quarter. But No Shnacks rallied to take a 29-28 lead late in the second quarter and led, 36-34, at halftime after a Brewer jumper just before the buzzer. The lead went back and forth in the third quarter before No Shnacks took a 47-46 lead when SD State-bound Jamaal Franklin, who had a game-high 22 pts, converted a pass from PG Nick Bennett (Antelope Valley) for a jam.

In the fourth quarter, No Shnacks pulled away, taking a 53-48 lead on a jam by Bennett. A pair of driving lay-ups by Jackson pushed the lead to nine at 57-48. Another Franklin jam on another pass from bennett made it 64-54 with just over a minute left, putting No Shnacks in control.

Brewer finished with 9 pts and 4 rebs for the winners. Ctr Joshua "Byrd" Rayne (Fullerton) had 6 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts and 3 blocks, and Ctr Kevin Bradshaw (Riverside/UC Riverside), the JCHoops.com 2009-10 SoCal Player of the Year, had 6 pts, a team-high 10 rebs and 2 blocked shots. Bennett had 4 pts and 2 asts, and PG Eric Williams (Orange Coast/CS Fullerton) had 3 pts and 2 asts. PF Davie Champagnie (Riverside) started but did not score before leaving the game with a sprained right ankle in the opening minutes.

For Say No. PG Dwight Gordon (Victor Valley/UC Riverside) led the way with 13 pts, and PF Kenny McGrath (Victor Valley/Sterling) had 11 pts. Ctr Tom Granado (Citrus/Concordia) had a double-double with 10 pts and a game-high 14 rebs. SG Brandon Clemons (Chaffey/SW Baptist) also had 10 pts and added a game-high 6 asts. PF Swing Chuang (Fullerton) had 6 pts and PG Earnest (EJ) Fife (Cypress) had 2 pts and 2 asts.

In the next game, SG Durrell Norman (Antelope Valley/Irvine Valley) had 18 pts and a game-high 12 rebs as SoCal Elite cruised to an easy 96-68 win over West Coast Academy.

SoCal Elite, featuring a pair of former University of Oregon players in Kamyron Brown and Drew Viney, raced out to a 30-12 lead after one quarter and was never headed. Viney finished with a game-high 23 pts and Brown had a triple-double with 19 pts, 10 rebs and 10 asts.

Ctr Keith Thompson (Citrus/Utah Valley State) led WCA with 21 pts and 9 rebs. PG Hakeem Washington (Citrus) had 18 pts. But nobody else scored in double figures. SG Chris Adams (Long Beach) had 9 pts, SG Moiz Khan (El Camino) had 8 and Justin Johnson (Citrus/Concordia), playing out of position opposite Viney at power forward (he's a 6-2 guard) managed 5 pts, 4 rebs, 4 blocks and 3 steals in a valiant though unsuccessful effort. SF Jamal Brown (Portland CC) did not score but grabbed 7 rebs and PG Bennett Shaw (Portland CC) also saw brief action.

In the next game, PG Matt Hornbuckle (Moorpark/Westmont) and SF Dante Godlock (Chaffey) each had 17 pts to help BTI to a 69-59 win over Reality Approach.

Hornbuckle played the entire 32 minutes, finishing with 17 pts plus 5 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals while teaming with his younger brother Keegan (Colorado/UC Santa Barbara). Godlock added a team-high 7 rebs to his 17 pts which tied Hornbuckle for team honors.

BTI started on a 14-4 run and held a narrow lead for much of the game, but Reality Approach rallied to tie the score at 37 midway through the third quarter.

In the final seconds of the third quarter, however, Matt Hornbuckle put BTI back in control, first scoring on a driving lay-up with 1.3 seconds left and then, after a Reality Approch turnover, scoring on an inbounds pass from Keegan just ahead of the buzzer to give BTI a 47-41 lead. Then when the fourth quarter started, he stole the ball in the backcourt and hit a short jumper to make it 49-41.

Reality Approach got within three points at 53-50 midway through the fourth quarter, but never pulled even again. Godlock's pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds left made it 69-59 and iced the win for BTI.

SG William (B.J.) Rosary (Pasadena) also started for BTI and had 6 pts, 4 rebs and 2 asts.

For Reality Approach, SG Lawrence Robinson tied for game honors with 17 pts. SG Jerell Elder (Cerritos) came off the bench for 10 pts and 5 rebs. Ctr Ken Hicks (Chaffey) had 2 pts and tied for game honors with 10 rebs. Off the bench, SG Tyler Mitchell (Long Beach) had 9 pts on 3 threes, while PF Cameron Herbert (Long Beach) had 3 pts and 4 rebs. PF Leif Williams (Mt. San Antonio) started but did not score.

In the day's finale, PF Mike Meza (Moorpark) had 5 pts and 4 rebs to help the Tritons, a team of players from UC-San Diego, to a 62-50 win over the Golden Eagles, a team of players from La Sierra University.

The Golden Eagles led, 15-6, after one quarter but then the Tritons went on a 17-2 run to take a 23-17 lead. The Tritons led by 11 at 38-27 in the third quarter only to see the Golden Eagles rally to within a point at the end of the third quarter, but pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win.

For the Golden Eagles, SG Aaron Snyder (Riverside) had 8 pts and 8 rebs, and PF Isaac Waters (Imperial Valley) had 2 pts and 8 rebs. PG Daveon Woods (Mira Costa) had 2 pts, 6 rebs and a team-high 3 asts.

For the Golden Eagles, SG Aaron Snyder (Riverside) had 8 pts and 8 rebs, and PF Isaac Waters (Imperial Valley) had 2 pts and 8 rebs. PG Daveon Woods (Mira Costa) had 2 pts, 6 rebs and a team-high 3 asts.

Saturday, June 19 (Say No Classic @ The HAX, Hawthorne)

PG Josh Gordon (West LA/Texas A&M-Commerce) scored 8 of his game-high 16 pts in the fourth quarter and added team-highs of 8 rebs and 3 asts to lead West Coast Hoops to a 55-48 win over Salvatori's Shooters in the finale of the first Saturday slate of games in the 2010 Say No Classic at The HAX.

West Coast Hoops saw a 14-point first-half lead evaporate in the third quarter when UCLA's Tyler Honeycutt hit a jumper to put Salvatori's Shooters ahead, 27-26, and trailed by a point entering the final period.

PF Marcellus Jackson (Cerritos) had 8 pts and 6 rebs for the winners, and SF Kris Lawrie (El Camino/Colorado St-Pueblo) had a point, a rebound and a steal. Ctr Bryant Crowder (Santa Monica) arrived late but still played a big role in the fourth quarter with a basket, a block, a rebound and some solid defense against Honeycutt. Ctr Pierre Prince (LA Valley) started and did not score but had 3 blocks and 2 rebs.
