Summer 2008

Over the summer, whenever I see someone with ties to the JC world, I'll poste the highlights on this page.

This summer began early in Southern California! OK, the NBDL isn't a summer league, but a few recent JC alumni came through town so I thought I'd mention them. (Also...my site, my rules!). There were also a few trips to Thousand Oaks for the IBL Lightning. Then there were the LA college leagues: the Say No Classic (at the Hangar in Hawthorne & Cal Poly Pomona) and Rico's Get Better League (@ Salesian HS). And of course there were a couple of trips to SF for the venerable Pro-Am league at Kezar Pavilion.

There were three JC exposure events as well: the 3 Stripes JC Shootout (July 12-13 @ the Galen Center), the Diablo Valley Shootout (July 25-26 @ DVC) and the Hoop Review JC Showcase (July 30-31 @ Azusa Pacific). Reports on those events are linked at the bottom of the page.

Saturday, August 16 (Say No Classic Championship Game @ HAX)

PG Jason McKinney (Panola/LA Southwest/Hawaii Pacific), SF Robert (Reggie) Arnold (Antelope Valley/Boise State) and SF Martez Walker (Riverside) were all on the winning side as Hank's Top Prospects raced past Hank's Toros, 91-66, to claim the 2008 Say No Classic championship on Nike Championship Saturday at HAX.

Hank's Top Prospects truly lived up to their (new) name, leading virtually wire to wire and never seeing their advantage shrink below 19 points in the second half. The team that was known as Hank's Lil Hoopers earlier in the season entered the playoffs as the #6 seed in the LA division, but won four straight games to win the title.

McKinney had another strong game off the bench with 7 pts, 3 rebs, 2 asts and a game-high 4 steals. Arnold started and had 4 pts, 4 rebs and an assist. And Walker came off the bench to add 7 pts, 3 rebs, 1 assist and a steal.

For Hank's Toros, which came into the postseason as the #1 seed in the Inland Empire division, PF Rodney Yearby (Riverside/CSDH) had a double-double with 17 pts, 10 rebs, 2 blocks and 3 steals. PG Aaron Tinsley (Grossmont/CSDH) had 9 pts, 2 rebs and 2 asts, and Ctr Brandon Stores (Panola/Southern Idaho/CSDH) had 8 pts, and 6 rebs. But the team of players from Cal State Dominguez Hills had just 5 players available, and sorely missed PG Mike Hernandez (Rio Hondo/Santa Ana/CSDH), who had another playing commitment Saturday.

Friday, August 15 (Say No Classic Semifinals @ HAX)

Ctr Brandon Stores (Panola/Southern Idaho/CSDH) scored 6 of his game-high 26 pts in overtime to lead Hank's Toros to a 71-68 win over Entertainment Tonite, earning the Toros a berth in the championship game.

Stores also pulled down a game-high 12 rebs for the winners, a team made of players from Cal State Dominugez Hills. And PG Mike Hernandez (Rio Hondo/Santa Ana) had a very strong game as well with 19 pts, 7 rebs and a game-high 9 asts.

Neither team led by more than 7 points all game, but the Toros seemed to have things in control with a 7-point lead with less than two minutes left in regulation. But Entertainment Tonite rallied with a 3-point play by SF Joseph Morgan (LA Trade Tech) and baskets by PF Rico Myles (LA Trade Tech) and SF Justin Carter (Compton/Fullerton/Creighton) to tie the game with 24 seconds left. After a late missed shot by the Toros, the game went into overtime.

In the extra session, Stores scored 6 points to give the Toros a 69-65 lead. A 3-point play by Carter brought Entertainment Tonite to within a point, but the Toros never surrendered the lead. A basket by Hernandez with 16 seconds left made it 71-68. Entertainment Tonite had a couple of chances to tie it late, but 3-point tries by Myles and PG Marquis Dubose (LA Trade Tech) missed in the final seconds.

Also for Hank's Toros, PF Rodney Yearby (Riverside) flirted with a double-double before settling for 9 pts and 9 rebs. SG Aaron Tinsley (Grossmont) also had 9 pts, plus 3 rebs and 2 asts.

For Entertainment Tonite, Carter led the way with 18 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals. Morgan had 13 pts and a team-high 5 asts. Myles just missed a double-double with 10 pts and 9 rebs. SF Kevin McDowell (LA Trade Tech) had 10 pts and Dorsey had 9 pts plus 3 asts. Ctr Kyisean Reed (Antelope Valley) added 6 pts plus 8 rebs, 4 blocks and 2 steals. SG James (J.R.) Lewis (LA Trade Tech/Fresno Pacific) came off the bench and had 2 pts and 3 rebs.

In the second semifinal, PG Jason McKinney (Panola/LA Southwest/Hawaii Pacific) had 12 pts, a game-high 6 asts and 3 steals to help Hank's Top Prospects to a 69-52 win over CABC.

McKinney had 5 of his assists in the decisive third quarter, which Hank's Top Prospects began with a 15-0 run to turn a 2-point halftime lead into a decisive 17-point advantage. CABC, a team featuring a pair of McDonald's All-Americans (UCLA's James Keefe and Malcolm Lee), never got the lead back into single digits again.

SF Robert (Reggie) Arnold (Antelope Valley/Boise State) started for the winners and had 6 pts plus 7 rebs, 2 asts and a steal. SF Martez Walker (Riverside) added 2 pts and 5 rebs.

PG Blake Touchard (Irvine Valley) came off the bench for CABC and had 2 pts.

Friday, August 8 (Rico's Get Better League)

Ctr Ricky Boyles (LA City) had 33 pts and 18 rebs for Rico's Heat in the championship game of Rico's Get Better League, but Rico's Franchise Boys had five scorers in double figures and won easily, 118-106, to capture the title of the first-year league.

Boyles led the league in both scoring and rebounding by a considerable margin, and would have undoubtedly been league MVP had his team finished better than its final 6-9 mark. But Boyles continued his strong play in the playoffs, leading the #7-seed Heat to upset wins over the #2 and #3 seeds and a berth in the finals.

PF Trevele Jones (Cerritos/Texas Southern) also had a strong game in the final with 30 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Jones also averaged well over 20 points per game for the season.

SF Curry McKinney (LA Trade Tech) also played well in the final, finishing with 18 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals.

PG Antoine Smithson (East LA) started and had 8 pts, 4 rebs and 2 asts. PF Damien Riley (East LA) came off the bench and had 2 pts and 2 rebs. SG Delanne Woods (East LA) also saw brief action but did not score.

Tuesday, August 5 (SF Bay Area Pro-Am @ Kezar Pavilion)

Ctr Eric Crookshank (Chabot/And-1/Finland) had 24 pts and 7 rebs, and SF Maurice "Mo" Brown (CCSF/ABA) added 10 pts, 9 rebs and 4 asts as Dream Team overcame a hot-shooting Bay Pride and posted a 109-102 win in the first round of the playoffs.

Bay Pride led by 7 early on, and stuck around with the help of 12 threes, six of which came from PG Josh Urbistondo (Foothill/Fresno Pacific), who finished with 22 pts and 4 asts.

But Dream Team pulled away in the fourth quarter, building an 11-point lead with just over 4 minutes left. Still, Bay Pride rallied to get within three points in the final minute before a pair of free throws by USF alumn Ali Thomas made it 107-102. Then Crookshank threw down a huge dunk on an assist from NBA veteran Matt Barnes to clinch the win and close out the scoring.

PG Cris Kelly (Monterey Peninsula/Sonoma State) had 10 pts and 3 asts for the winners, and his backup, PG Alfonzo Williams (CCSF/Skyline/Kentucky Wesleyan) had 2 pts and 2 asts. SF Derrick "D-Mac" Hogan (CC San Franciso) did not score but had 3 rebs and provided energy to start the second half.

postscript: Dream Team defeated SF City in the semi-final and top-seeded East Bay in the final to win its second SF Bay Area Pro-Am title. The other Dream Team championship was in 1998. D-Mac Hogan, Alfonzo Williams and USF alumn Ali Thomas are the only three players to have played on both of Dream Team's championship teams. Mo Brown also played on last year's champion Oakland Believers squad.

Monday, August 4 (SF Bay Area Pro-Am @ Kezar Pavilion)

SF Johnny Dukes (San Bernardino Valley/University of San Francisco) scored the game-winning basket on a left-handed driving lay-up with 7.3 seconds left to lift SF City to a 93-92 win over the Bay Raiders in the first game of the SF Pro-Am playoffs.

Dukes took a pass from NBA veteran Adonal Foyle and scored the bucket 8.3 seconds after SG Will Walker (Ohlone/Georgetown KY) hit a 15-foot jumper to give the Raiders a 92-91 lead. Walker also had a chance to give his team the win at the buzzer, but that last-second jumper bounced off the rim and out.

Dukes finished with 14 pts in the win. SF Marek Ondara (Skyline/Mira Costa/UC Irvine/Denmark) came off the bench to add 5 pts and 4 rebs.

The Bay Raiders lost despite a tremendous game from PG Dwuan Rice (LA City/CS Bakersfield/NBDL), who had 23 pts and 10 asts. SF Reginald Smith (San Jose CC/Northeastern Oklahoma State) also played extremely well, posting the double-double with 16 pts and a game-high 14 rebs. SF Nic Pederson (Santa Rosa/CS Stanislaus) added 8 pts and 3 rebs, and PG Johnny Del Bene (SD Mesa) came off the bench and did not score but dished out 2 asts.

Sunday, August 3 (Rico's Get Better League)

Ctr Ricky Boyles (LA City) continued his superb play with 26 pts and 17 rebs to lead Team Heat to a surprise berth in the championship game of Rico's GBL.

Boyles, who led the league in both scoring and rebounding by a wide margin during the regular season, helped the #7 seed Heat (6-8) defeat #3 seed Team Get Better (8-6) a day after he helped the Heat beat #2 seed Team Future in triple-overtime.

Sunday, Get Better jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game's first minute behind 3-pointers from PG Steve Monreal (East LA/Cal State Monterey Bay), SG Cesar Gerardo (East LA/Cal State Maritime) and Cedric Latimer.

But Heat rallied, tying the game at 23 and staying close the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by PF Damien Riley (East LA) broke a 59-59 tie with just over three minutes left.

Team Heat led the rest of the way, but it was a one-possession game at 70-67 when Boyles stole a pass and got the ball to SG Curry McKinney (LA Trade Tech), who made a free throw with 18.7 seconds left to make it a two-possession game. After missed 3-point attempts by Monreal and PF Demetrius Hazel (Long Beach/Cal State LA), PG Antoine Smithson (East LA) got the rebound and passed to Riley, who made a pair of FT with 3.3 seconds left to seal the win.

PG Trevele Jones (Cerritos/Texas Southern) had 18 pts, 5 rebs, 3 steals and a game-high 6 asts for the winners. Smithson added 9 pts, 5 rebs and 3 steals, and Riley came off the bench to score 8 pts. McKinney had 5 pts.

For Get Better, Monreal led the way with 20 pts, including 4 threes, and 6 rebs. Hazel had 15 pts and SF Dante Green (Snow CC/Cal State Monterey Bay) had 7 pts and 5 rebs off the bench. Ctr Sergio Lugo (Saddleback/East LA) had 4 pts, 3 rebs and 2 asts, Cesar Gerardo had 3 pts and 3 asts, and SG Jeremy Gerardo (East LA) did not score but grabbed a rebound.

In the other semifinal, PG Maurice Clady (Grossmont/Long Beach State) had 23 pts, 6 rebs and 5 asts but San Diego (7-6) fell anyway, 84-70, to top-seeded Rico's Franchise Boys.

Ctr David Kinder (San Diego City) had 15 pts and 7 rebs for San Diego, and SF Jamel McGuire (San Diego City) had 13 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Ctr Ryon White (Compton/LA Southwest) came off the bench and added 4 pts and 5 rebs.

Saturday, August 2 (Say No Classic @ HAX)

Ctr Gerard Anderson (Saddleback/CS Fullerton) had 19 pts, 10 rebs and 5 asts to help Belmont Shores to a 92-60 win over Salvatori's Spirit, improving team's record to 6-2 entering the playoffs Saturday afternoon at HAX.

Anderson, who had played both point guard and wing forward in other games this season, again had several spectacular dunks, including a reverse jam that gave Belmont Shores a 31-30 lead after his team fell behind by 10 points in the early going. Belmont Shores led the rest of the way, pulling away in the second half.

SG Vince Fuller (West LA/Saddleback) had 7 pts and 5 rebs for the winners.

Ctr Zach Atkinson (Feather River/UC Irvine) had a double-double for Salvatori's Spirit with 16 pts and 10 rebs. SG Aaron Thompson (Cerritos/CS Fullerton) had 14 pts, 7 rebs and 5 asts. SF Jason Goodman (Chaffey/Great Falls) also saw brief action but did not score.

In earlier action, SF Donald Thomas (Daytona Beach CC/Sacramento State) had 15 pts and Ctr Trevele Jones (Cerritos/Texas Southern) had 12 to lead Hoop Family to a 69-52 win over Sinclair's Bruins in the first game of the day.

Hoop Family jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the game's first minute, only to see the Bruins rally to trail by just 3 points after one quarter. But by halftime the lead was 21 and the game went to a running clock after the lead reached 25 points early in the third quarter.

SF Roy Walker (LA Southwest/The Master's College) had 8 pts, 5 rebs and 3 asts for the winners. PG Patrick Cleveland (LA Southwest) added 2 pts, 1 assist and 2 steals.

SF Marc Wilson (Mt. San Jacinto/Pasadena) led the Bruins with 13 pts, 6 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals. PG Michael Butler (LA Southwest) had 9 pts and 4 asts, while PF Kemorris Gunn (El Camino) had 9 pts and 4 rebs.

In the day's second game, SG Buchi Awaji (Citrus/Kansas State) came off the bench to pour in 15 pts and add 7 rebs and 5 asts as Salvatori's Shooters improved their record to 5-2 with a 73-61 win over Hank's Team.

The Shooters began the game with an 8-0 lead thanks to the tardiness of Hank's Team, but the game was in doubt until the third quarter when Awaji scored 10 of his points and the Shooters extended their lead to 14 points.

PG Rob Ford (Santa Rosa) started for the winners, and had 4 pts plus an assist.

For Hank's Team, SF Braylin Bauman (Moorpark) had 13 pts, 4 rebs and 2 steals. PG Zeon Gray (Whatcomm CC) had 4 pts, 5 rebs and a game-high 8 asts. SF Demetrius Malone (LA Valley) added 2 pts and 4 rebs. Ctr Troy Payne (Citrus) had 6 pts, 2 rebs and 2 steals before leaving the game in the second quarter thanks to an elbow from USC's Alex Stepheson, which knocked out one of Payne's teeth (ouch!).

In the day's finale, PF Jeremy Smith (Citrus/Western Georgia) had 5 pts and 4 rebs to help Salvatori's Future Stars clinch a share of first place with a 59-54 win over Norm Nixon's Apaches.

The Future Stars finish the regular season 7-1, a mark that can only be equalled by Salvatori's Squad, a team led by USC standouts Taj Gibson and Daniel Hackett.

SF Jonathan Malloy (Oxnard/Sacramento State) had 15 pts and 4 rebs for the Apaches, who were eliminated from the playoff race with the loss. PG Steven Bennett (Citrus) had 9 pts and 6 rebs, and SG James Reynolds (Citrus) had 2 pts and 2 asts for the Apaches.

Sunday, July 20 (Say No Classic @ Cal Poly Pomona)

SG Dominique Johnson (Southwest Tennessee/Azusa Pacific) had 34 points and SF Keiran Nunley (Riverside) just missed a triple-double as the SoCal Warriors raced past S & P Basketball, 97-76, to cap a day of I.E. action at Cal Poly Pomona.

Johnson, the 2007-08 Tennessee Player of the Year, also had 6 rebs and 6 asts in a most impressive performance. And Nunley finished with 16 points, 18 rebounds and 8 assists as the Warriors extended a 3-point lead after the first quarter into double digits by halftime and led throughout the second half.

Ctr Stephen Colvin (Riverside/Panhandle State) started and added 9 pts and 3 rebs for the winners. SG Bo Harrison (San Bernardino Valley) came off the bench and added 4 pts, 5 rebs, 6 asts and 2 steals.

For S & P, Ctr Demetrius Hazel (Long Beach CC/Cal State LA) led the way with 23 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals. SF Jason Stubbs (Forest Park CC) had 19 pts, 4 asts and 5 steals. SG Chris Hart (Long Beach CC/Cal State LA) had 15 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals.

In earlier action, 6-2 T.J. Smith (Chaffey/Kentucky Wesleyan) was forced to play center in a makeshift lineup, and Salvatori's No Schnacks surrendered a 20-point lead in the second half. But they nonetheless edged BTI, 87-84, in the day's first game.

No Schnacks held a 73-53 lead late in the third quarter, but saw BTI rally and take a lead late in the game. But thanks largely to a pair of baskets by UCLA star Darren Collison, as well as a key blocked shot in the final seconds by Smith, No Schnacks came away with the victory.

Smith had 11 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots in the win. SG Calvin Mitchell (Santa Monica) added 14 pts and 5 rebs, and PG Lawrence Etah (Riverside) had 10 pts, 4 asts and 4 steals. SF Wayne Robinson (Riverside) chipped in with 4 pts off the bench.

For BTI, Ctr Kurt Graeber (Fullerton/Dartmouth), a member of the undefeated 2006 California state champions, had a double-double with 14 pts and a game-high 12 rebs. Ctr Sarunas Jackson (Saddleback) came off the bench and had 9 pts, 4 rebs and 3 asts.

In the day's second game, PG Larry Dew (Victor Valley/Chaffey/Jarvis Christian) had 18 pts, 6 asts and 5 steals to help 27 & 0 to an 83-79 win over West Coast Academy.

Dew scored 11 of his points in the final quarter. 27 & 0 overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to come away with the win.

SF Prince Ray Pope (CC San Francisco/Cal State Monterey Bay) had 6 pts, all in the fourth quarter, and 4 rebs for the winners. And SF Lawrence Robinson (Cerritos) had 6 pts, 2 rebs and 2 asts.

For West Coast Academy, Irvine Valley redshirt Derek Simon had a strong game with 11 pts, 8 rebs and 7 steals. Irvine Valley grayshirt Jamaal Brown added 5 pts and LA City alumn Rodney Williams (Bemidji State) added 3 asts and a steal though he did not score.

In the day's third game, PCC Most Valuable Player Brandon Dowdy (Imperial Valley/UC Riverside) had 10 pts, 6 rebs and 2 blocks but Dynasty fell anyway, 69-57, to CABC.

Dynasty led by a single point at the end of the first quarter, but CABC held them to just 7 points in the second quarter, built a double-digit halftime lead and was never threatened in the second half.

SF Derrick O'Neil (Florida CC/Florida-Gulf Coast) had 5 pts plus 6 rebs, 6 asts and 4 steals for the victorious CABC squad. SG Jeff Ledbetter (Irvine Valley) came off the bench to add 2 pts and 4 asts, and IVC redshirt PG Blake Touchard didn't score but started and dished out 4 asts.

SG Paul McCloney (Moorpark) came off the bench for Dynasty and had 7 pts plus 5 rebs.

Saturday, July 19 (Say No Classic @ HAX)

PG Donte Smith (Mt. SAC/USC) had 20 pts and 6 asts to lead first-place Salvatori's Squad (6-0) to a 74-62 win over Hank's Big Time in the final game of Saturday's Say No Classic program at HAX.

Smith, who red-shirted this past season at Pasadena, had the shot of the game as well, an off-balance fall-away 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter that gave the Squad a 50-43 lead entering the final eight minutes. After that, The Squad began the final period with a 9-0 spurt to put the game away.

For Hank's Big Time, which falls to 0-5, PF Brandon James (Saddleback/UC Irvine) had 14 pts and 7 rebs. SG Markus Monroe (Glendale) had 12 pts and 8 rebs. PG Chris Johnson (Pasadena) saw brief action but did not score.

In earlier action, PG Rob Ford (Santa Rosa) had 4 pts, 5 rebs and a game-high 11 asts to help Salvatori's Shooter to a 68-66 win over Entertainment Tonite in the day's first game.

Ford's older brother Joe, a senior at the University of the Pacific, scored the winning basket as the Shooters improved to 3-2 on the season. PF Ricky Boyles (LA City) came off the bench to add 9 pts and 5 rebs for the winners.

For E.T., PF Justin Carter (Compton/Fullerton/Creighton) had a team-high 22 pts plus 6 rebs. SG James (J.R.) Lewis (LA Trade Tech/Fresno Pacific) added 17 pts and 5 asts. SG Antonio Weary (Hutchinson/Central Michigan) added 9 pts, 5 rebs and 3 asts, and SG Marquis Dubose (LA Trade Tech) had a solid game with 7 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals.

In the day's second game, PF Jeremy Smith (Citrus/Western Georgia) had 6 pts, 4 rebs and 2 steals, helping Salvatori's Future Stars to a 75-67 win over previously-undefeated Belmont Shores.

Belmont Shores led early on, but the Future Stars rallied to the game at halftime and took an 11-point lead after three quarters. Belmont Shores rallied to within 4 points with 1:52 left, but the Future Stars, who improved to 4-1 with the win, held on.

SF Gerard Anderson (Saddleback/CS Fullerton) had 15 pts, 3 rebs and 4 asts for Belmont Shores. Ctr Josh Crawford (Oxnard/Indiana State) had 2 pts plus 8 rebs and 2 blocked shots.

In the 5 pm game, SG James Reynolds (Citrus) had 16 pts and SF Jonathan Malloy (Oxnard/Sacramento State) had 12 plus 5 asts as Norm Nixon's Apaches posted a 71-60 win over Salvatori's Spirit.

The Spirit held a 31-23 lead late in the second quarter, but then the Apaches went on a 16-0 run over the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters to take the lead. The Apaches held just a 3-point lead entering the final quarter, but never surrendered the lead after halftime.

For the Spirit, PF Zach Atkinson (Feather River/UC Irvine) had a double-double with 15 pts, 14 rebs and 3 blocked shots. SG Aaron Thompson (Cerritos/CS Fullerton) added 14 pts, 7 rebs and 3 asts. Wednesday, July 9 (SF Bay Area Pro-Am @ Memorial Gym, USF)

In a showdown of the league's last two champions, Bay City (the 2006 champs) won a 128-108 decision over the Oakland Believer (the 2007 champs) Wednesday night in a rare alternate site game at USF.

Ctr Justin Brownlee (CCSF) came off the bench to score 21 pts, 14 in the second half, and pull down a team-high 11 rebs to propel Bay City to the win.

The first half, particularly the second quarter, was a display of offense as Bay City took a 61-56 lead at the break. Bay City pushed that lead to 20 points at 87-67 midway through the third quarter, only to see the Believers close the gap to four points at 90-86 at the end of the period.

But in the fourth quarter, Bay City pulled away again for the win, dealing a crippling blow to the Believers' playoff chances as the defending champions fell to 0-4.

SF Mike Scott (Cabrillo/IBL) had 8 pts and SF Greer Wright (CCSF) had 2 pts for the winners. SF Julian Conyers (San Jose CC/Coppin St) also saw brief action but did not score.

For the Believers, SG Fabien Baker (Cosumnes River) had 15 pts, 5 rebs and 5 asts. PG Taquane Franklin (Shasta) had 10 pts and a game-high 9 asts. PF Antoine Hodge (Merritt) added 6 pts and Ctr Will Levy (Diablo Valley/Eastern Washington) had 2 pts and 5 rebs. PGs Robert Owens (CCSF/San Jose State) and Herb Taylor (Alameda) did not score in brief action but each dished out 2 asts.

Tuesday, July 8 (SF Bay Area Pro-Am @ Kezar Pavilion)

Ctr Eric Crookshank (Chabot/Idaho State/And-1) had 28 pts and 11 rebs to lead Dream Team to an 85-76 win over South Bay in the SF Bay Area Pro-Am at Kezar Pavilion.

Crookshank, who has signed with the And-1 tour and will apparently be known as "Air Canada", threw down a half-dozen spectacular dunks while finishing with the game-high point total.

Dream Team led most of the game, though that lead was just two points entering the final quarter.

SG Cris Kelly (Monterey Peninsula/Sonoma State) had 5 pts and 3 rebs for the winners, and SF Derrick "D-Mac" Hogan (CCSF) had 4 pts and 4 rebs. PG Alfonzo Williams (CCSF/Skyline/KY Wesleyan) had 2 pts and a game-high 6 asts.

SG Owen Brow (LA City) had game-highs of 27 pts and 10 rebs to lead Team Under The Radar to a 75-73 win over Rico's Young Franchise Boys in Rico's GBL action Sunday afternoon at Salesian HS.

The win, which came about when Santa Clara signee James Rahon scored the game-winning basket with 0.4 seconds remaining in the game, lifts Under The Radar into a tie for second place with a 4-3 record.

PF Maurice Walters (LA City) came off the bench to add 6 pts and 4 rebs for the winners. PG Trey Finister (Connors State JC) added 2 pts, 3 rebs, 2 steals and an assist.

In earlier action, SF Jose Sanchez (Sequoias/Cal State Monterey Bay) had 19 pts, 4 rebs and 6 asts for Team Get Better in a 72-69 win over Team San Diego. This win gives Team Get Better a 4-3 record and a share of second place, along with Under The Radar.

PG Jeremy Gerardo (East LA) had 9 pts, 8 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals for the victors. And Ctr Sergio Lugo (Saddleback/East LA) had a vintage Ben Wallace-like game with just one point but 18 rebs and 4 blocked shots.

Ctr David Kinder (San Diego City) had a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for San Diego, which played the entire first half shorthanded since they only had 4 players. Despite that, the game was tied 40-40 at the break. San Diego trailed by 6 points early in the second half when a fifth player arrived, but tied the game a few minutes later only to lose in the final minutes.

PG Maurice Clady (Grossmont/Long Beach State) had 12 pts, 6 rebs, 8 asts and 5 steals for San Diego. SG Marquis Carmichael (Long Beach City) had 6 pts and 7 rebs.

In the day's second game, Ctr Ricky Boyles (LA City) continued his strong play with 23 pts and 15 rebs but Team Heat fell anyway, 85-70, to undefeated first-place Rico's Franchise Boys.

PG James White (LA City) had 16 pts for Team Heat, including a spectacular one-handed dunk over 6-6 Tyrone Shelley in the second half (I thought it was against 6-9 Malcolm Thomas, but have since been informed that it was Shelley - still, it was an impressive dunk!). SG Justin Archie (West LA) had 12 pts, 5 asts and 2 steals, and SF Damien Riley (East LA) had 12 pts and 6 rebs.

In the day's finale, PG Eric Nelson (LA City) had 17 pts and 6 asts to lead Checks & Balances to a 79-44 drubbing of Team Future. The win had a distince LA City College flavor, as SF Chris Telesford (LACC) had a double-double with 13 pts and 12 rebs, and former LACC guard Terell Powell (Mountain State) had 12 pts and 7 rebs.

SG Lester Keys (East LA) chipped in with 11 pts for the winners, and SF Benjamin Clyde (East LA/Holy Names) had 9 pts and 9 rebs. Ctr Richard Westphaim (East LA/Holy Names) had just 2 pts but pulled down 8 rebs. PG William Rosary (Pasadena) added 9 pts off the bench.

Saturday, July 5 (Rico's GBL @ Salesian HS)

SF Trevele Jones (Cerritos) had a game-high 33 points, but it was SG Justin Archie (West LA) who not only scored the game-winning basket but preserved the win with a blocked shot as Team Heat edged Team Get Better in double overtime to highlight the day at Rico's GBL.

It was the first double-overtime game in the first-year league. Team Heat forced the game to a second overtime when Jones made a pair of free throws with 6.1 seconds left in the first overtime. Then Team Get Better took an 88-85 lead early in the second overtime, but Team Heat rallied behind two more free throws from Jones and Archie's putback to go ahead, 89-88. Then Archie blocked Team Get Better's final shot at the buzzer.
