Cuyamaca 74, Oxnard 68 (OT)

Kendall Kirkland had 18 pts and 11 rebs and Tim Pace had 16 pts and 10 rebs to lead Cuyamaca to a 74-68 overtime win over Oxnard in the consolation game of Clash at Canyons in Santa Clarita on Saturday.

Cuyamaca (1-2) scored the final 7 points of overtime to get the win after trailing for much of the game. Oxnard (0-2) led by as many as 9 points and held a 9-point lead with 5:18 left in regulation time.

Cuyamaca rallied to tie the score with 1:11 left on a coast-to-coast lay-up by Kirkland that made it 59-59. After Daniel Crocker nailed a jumper for Oxnard with 39 seconds to go, Kirkland scored off a pass from Dominique Watkins with 22.2 seconds left.

In those last 22.2 seconds, Oxnard came painfully close to claiming its first win since January 21, 2012. Crocker pulled up for a 3-pointer with just under 10 seconds left, but it bounced off the rim. Then Matt Ramon had two chances at a contested putback but each try missed. Finally, Crocker grabbed the rebound and tried an off-balance putback attempt of his own, but it also missed, sending the game to overtime.

Oxnard, which reinstated its mens basketball program this season after a 2-year hiatus, jumped out to an early 14-7 lead and led much of the game. The Condors led, 32-26, at the half and pushed the margin to 39-30 about 5 minutes into the second half. And even after missing all those chances for the win, the Condors held a 68-67 lead with under two minutes left in OT.

Cuyamaca never led until overtime, but took the lead for good on a nifty up-and-under move by Pace that also drew Ramon's 5th personal foul of the game. Then Kirkland scored to make it 71-68 with just over a minute left in OT. After a Kirkland steal, Tyrone Hueitt scored on a putback to make it 73-68. Watkins added a free throw with 10.2 seconds left to close out the scoring.

For Cuyamaca, Kirkland led all scorers with his 18 pts and he also had a team-high 11 rebs. Pace also had a double-double with his 16 pts, all in the second half and overtime, plus 10 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals. Watkins had 8 pts, 5 ast and 3 steals.

For Oxnard, DeSean Scott scored a team-high 17 pts and added 3 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals. Crocker came off the bench for 16 pts and 8 rebs. Deondre Edwards had 8 pts, 5 asts and a game-high 6 steals.
