East Los Angeles 87, Canyons 84

Sequan Walker scored 28 pts and Roderick Williams posted a double-double for East Los Angeles in the Huskies’ 87-84 win over Canyons in the championship game of The Clash At Canyons Saturday afternoon.

Walker earned a berth on the all-tournament team, and Williams was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 10 pts and grabbing a game-high 12 rebs in the championship game.

East LA (2-0) used a 26-7 extended run in the second half to erase a 52-46 deficit and built a 72-59 lead with 7:28 left. Canyons (1-1) made one last late rally, using a flurry of 3-pointers to get within 3 points in the final minute before finally running out of time.

Canyons held a 29-24 lead with just over 7 minutes left in the first half, but East LA went on a 14-0 run to seemingly take control. The Huskies led, 38-29, but Canyons rallied to cut the margin to just 4 points at the break to trail, 41-37.

After the teams traded 3-pointers to start the second half, Canyons went on a 12-2 run to take the 52-46 lead following a pair of free throws by Chris Collins, who sat out most of the first half in foul trouble. But the lead lasted only until Chandler Redix scored 8 straight points for ELAC, giving the Huskies a 56-55 lead with 13:11 left.

East LA led the rest of the way, but Canyons made it interesting in the final mnute. A steal by Garrett Mike led to a 3-pointer by Kalu to make it 83-78. After Redix split a pair of free throws for ELAC, Jason Horosny made a three to bring the Cougars within three points at 84-81. Walker made one free throw and Frank Bertz made two to push East LA’s lead to 87-81, rendering Horosny’s final 3-pointer as the final buzzer sounded harmless.

Walker led the Huskies with 28 pts, which came on 10-for-16 from the floor and included 4 three-pointers. He also had 3 asts and 3 steals. Redix had 14 pts, 3 asts and a steal, and Williams had 10 pts and a game-high 12 rebs.

For Canyons, Kalu led all scorers with 29 pts, including 5 threes, and he also had 3 asts. Horosny had 21 pts, including 5 threes, plus 4 rebs and 5 asts. Garrett Harding scored 10 pts, all in the first half, and Jacob Lilley had 6 pts and a game-high 9 asts.

Overall, COC shot 53.4% from the floor with 16 threes, but East LA converted 21 of 29 free throw attempts compared to just 6 of 11 for the Cougars and amassed a 41-23 rebounding advantage.

Williams was named tourney MVP for the Huskies. Walker and Kalu joined him on the all-tournament team.
