Oxnard 87, LA Valley 85 (OT)

Marte Tyler nailed a 15-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds left in overtime, lifting Oxnard to a dramatic 87-85 victory over visiting LA Valley Tuesday in a WSC crossover game at Oxnard College.

Tyler was 3-for-18 from the floor on the night before hitting the dramatic shot and had missed a diving lay-up attempt with about 30 seconds left and Oxnard (3-1) leading by a point. After Geordan Sayles split two free throws for LA Valley with 23.4 seconds left, Tyler held the ball for the last shot. As the clock wound down, he faked the drive to shake the defender and pulled up for the game-winning jumper, which hit nothing but net.

All that came after LA Valley (2-2) rallied from a 16-point deficit in the second half and, after forcing overtime on Michael Morrissey's 3-pointer with 2.0 seconds left in regulation, a 6-point deficit in overtime.

For much of the game, Oxnard held a lead and seemed to be in control. Valley held an early 7-4 advantage after Taturs Maberry scored all 7 Monarch points, but then Oxnard went on an 8-0 run to take a lead it would hold until the final two seconds of the second half.

The Condors extended a 9-point halftime lead to 16 after a 15-4 run early in the second half. DeSean Scott scored to make it 55-39, and Oxnard seemed firmly in control of things.

LA Valley rallied to cut the margin to single digits when Maberry made a three to make it 61-52 with 9:15 left. Then came a key play when Scott was fouled driving to the basket, but was assessed a technical in the aftermath. He made the two free throws, but the technical foul was also his fourth personal foul and the free throws would be his final points of the night as he went to the bench. He returned briefly before fouling out with 3:12 left.

And the Monarchs continued to chip away at the Oxnard lead. Sam Bauer hit a jumper off an inbounds play to cut the margin to seven at 63-56, and Sayles went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to make it 63-58. A jumper by Morrissey cut the margin to three at 69-66, and brought Valley within a point with a three with 1:20 to go that made it 73-72.

Darius Hamilton scored for Oxnard with just under a minute left to push the lead back to three at 75-72, but Morrissey drew a foul and made both free throws with 41.7 seconds to go, making it 75-74. Tyler missed a shot for Oxnard, barely drawing glass, and Morrissey was called for a loose ball foul in the skirmish for the rebound. Lonnie Hinchen made two free throws with 24.3 seconds left, pushing Oxnard's lead back to three at 77-74.

Then as the clock wound down, Morrissy, who missed his first five shots of the game, managed to shake loose just in time and launched the game-tying 3-pointer, bringing the Monarchs even for the first time since the first few minutes of the game.

But once overtime started, Oxnard went right back into the lead. Alvin Murry and Hamilton scored field goals and Murray added a pair of free throws to make it 83-77 with 2:35 left.

Once again, Valley battled back, thanks largely to Morrissey. His two free throws with 1:49 left made it a 4-point game, and his 3-pointer with 46.2 seconds to go brought the Monarchs within a point at 85-84. After Tyler's missed lay-up, Sayles got the rebound and was eventually fouled with 23.6 seconds left. He made the first free throw to tie the game, but missed the second, leaving the score tied before Tyler's game-winning shot.

For Oxnard, Scott finished with team-highs of 21 pts, 12 rebs and 4 steals despite his early exit. Hamilton came off the bench for a huge game, posting a double-double with 15 pts and 11 rebs and also blocking 2 shots. Hinchen also had a strong game off the bench with 14 pts and 5 rebs. Tyler had a mixed night statistically with 13 pts on 4-for-19 with 4 turnovers, but he dished out a game-high 9 asts and came up with the big shot when it counted most.

For Valley, Morrissey had a vintage Kobe-like final line of 34 pts on 10-for-27 from the floor, including 4 threes, and 10-for-13 from the free throw line, while adding 5 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals. Maberry had a double-double with 14 pts and a game-high 14 rebs, and also blocked 2 shots. Bauer came off the bench for 12 pts, and Sayles chipped in with 5 pts and a team-high 6 asts.
