San Francisco 86, Chaffey 71

All five starters scored in double figures as City College of San Francisco used a barrage of 3-pointers midway through the second half to pull away for an 86-71 win over Chaffey in the first state semifinal March 12th.

San Francisco (31-1) scored the last 5 points of the first half to lead, 39-34, at the half. The game had been played at the controlled pace Chaffey (25-7) prefers, and the Panthers were only 7 points behind when the threes started falling.

Jerrod Nodar made a three to give CCSF a 48-38 lead with 15:40 left. Zachary Copeland drained one to give the Rams a 55-43 advantage, and Nodar followed with a three with 11:16 left to make it 58-43. A three by Shon Briggs extended the margin to 16 at 63-47 with 10:10 left. Another three by Nodar made it 66-49 with 8:10 left.

After that, CCSF led by double digits the rest of the way despite Chaffey coach Jeff Klein creatively trying to extend the game. A wave of reserves entered with 5:38 left and started fouling to send CCSF to the line. But the Rams made enough free throws to maintain the advantage.

In addition to all the three - CCSF made 5 of them in each half - a key for the Rams was controlling the 3-point line on the defensive end. Chaffey entered the game averaging 8.8 made threes per game, but CCSF held them without a 3-pointer. SoCal Co-Player of the Year Victor Joseph entered averaging over 21 points per game but was held to less than half of that Saturday, finishing with 11 pts on 3-for-14 shooting. The Ram defense disrupted the Chaffey offensive flow enough that the Panthers had just 8 assists on 25 made baskets.

For San Francisco, Copeland had a team-high 22 pts. Briggs had a double-double with 21 pts and 10 rebs, and Nodar had 20 pts. Trevor Dunbar had 11 pts and a game-high 6 asts. Northern California Player of the Year Jalen Canty had a double-double with 10 pts and 13 rebs, and he also had 6 blocked shots.

For Chaffey, Brian Beard scored a game-high 24 pts and also had 9 rebs, 5 asts and 2 steals. Chris Edward had a double-double with 15 pts and a team-high 13 rebs. Donavan Taylor had 14 pts, 5 rebs and 3 steals. Joseph had 11 pts and 7 rebs.
