East Los Angeles 93, Compton 86

Iziahiah Sweeny scored 21 pts and Jarrell Tate scored 17 as #2 East Los Angeles battled back from a 13-point second-half deficit to get past Compton Friday night in a key South Coast Conference North Division match-up in Compton.

East LA (20-2, 3-0) trailed 51-38 early in the second half and, after rallying to take a 77-70 lead with just under 6 minutes left, saw Compton (12-10, 2-2) surge again to take a lead with about 3 minutes to go. But the Huskies went right back in front and held on late for the win to stay in first place in the division.

East LA scored the game's first 6 points, but then Compton tied the score at 8 and took a 12-10 lead. The Tartars maintained a lead from that point until the final 8 minutes of the game, opening a 37-24 lead late in the first half after a basket by Khiree Johns off a pass from Marquise Harris with just under 4 minutes left in the half.

Compton held a 44-34 lead at the half, and pushed its lead back to 13 points at 51-38 after a 3-pointer by Ivan Coe. The Tartars last held a double-digit lead midway through the second half at 59-49.

East LA battled back after that, taking a 66-65 lead on a pair of free throws by Chandler Redix with 7:48 left. That was part of an 11-0 run that gave the Huskies a 71-65 lead with 6:44 to play. A basket by Sweeny off a pass from Miles Ford pushed East LA's lead to 7 at 77-70 with just under 6 mintues to go.

Compton battled back from that deficit to take an 81-80 lead when Harris scored off an inbounds pass from Calvin House. But Tate scored twice in a row on driving lay-ups to put East LA back in front, 84-81, and the Huskies led the rest of the way.

Compton was still within three in the final minute with the ball, but Harris' long 3-point try missed, and Richard Bivens got the rebound for East LA. He was fouled immediately and made two free throws with 47.3 seconds left to give the Huskies a 91-86 lead. Arinze Anakwenze and Redix each added a free throw in the final 36.5 seconds to push the East LA lead to 7 and clinch the win for the Huskies.

For East LA, six players scored in double digits, led by Sweeny and his team-high 21 pts. Tate came off the bench for 17 pts, 15 in the second half to lead the comeback. Redix had 14 pts, Ford had 12 pts and Bivens had a double-double with 11 pts and a game-high 10 rebs. Zeno Lake came off the bench for 10 pts and 7 rebs.

For Compton, Harris had a team-high 21 pts plus 7 rebs, 2 asts, 2 blocks and 5 steals. Michael Chavers had 18 pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts and 4 steals. Kyvonte Davis had 17 pts, 9 rebs and a game-high 5 asts.

It was an inspired effort by Compton, giving East LA all it could handle with its frantic style of play. But fouls caught up to the Tartars in the second half, resulting in East LA going 20-for-27 from the free throw line in the 2nd half as the Huskies rallied for the win.

The win is East LA's 11th in a row, and keeps the Huskies in sole possession of first place in the South Coast's North Division. Compton falls to 12-10 overall and 2-2 in the division.
