Jonathan Johnson had 28 pts and Troy Goodman had 21 as LA Pierce (13-10, 4-3) raced to a 103-81 win in over visiting Oxnard (2-19, 1-6) in WSC-North action Saturday evening in Woodland Hills. The Brahmas shot 55% from the floor and made 12 threes in topping the century mark for the first time this season.
This one was a wide-open, offensive affair, with the Brahmas going deep into the bench to find more scorers. In all, 12 of the 13 Pierce players scored, including all the reserves who got into the game.
Oxnard stayed in the game early on, primarily due to the outstanding outside shooting of SF Spencer Davis. The 6-2 sophomore had 18 of his teams first 24 points, and finished with a team-high 27 pts and 6 threes. After his second three gave him 12 points, Oxnard trailed by just 3 points at 21-18.
But then Pierce went on a 19-7 run to take a 15-point lead at 40-25. The Brahmas got threes from J. Johnson and PG Ike Johnson to push their lead to 9 at 27-18 to start the run, and a three by Steven Shewmake made it 38-24.
Oxnard finished the first half on a 16-4 run, however, to cut the halftime margin to just 3 points at 44-41. A three by PF Ronnie Black and a steal & basket by Davis got the Condors to within 7 at 42-35, and a putback basket by PF Aaron Wall made it 44-39. A jumper by Wall just before the buzzer brought Oxnard to within 3 points at the break.
And early in the second half, Oxnard continued its push, tying the game at 46 on a three by Davis. And the Concors went in front moments later on a basket by PG Marcus Warren that made it 48-47. Then a pair of free throws by SG Rahim LeBlanc gave Oxnard a 50-47 lead.
But from that point on, it was all Pierce. A basket by Goodman put the Brahmas back in front at 51-50, and then Goodman scored again to make it 53-50. A three by J. Johnson made it 56-50, and Pierce was on its way. The lead reached double digits after a basket by SG Jamil Burwell on a feed from Goodman following a steal by Shewmake; that play made it 66-55 with just over 12 minutes left, and the Brahmas led comfortably the rest of the way. A three by J.Johnson pushed the margin to 21 points at 91-70 with just over 4 minutes left, and a three by Ctr Michael Mahlum pushed the Brahmas over the century mark, making it 103-81 in the final minute.
For Pierce, J. Johnson was outstanding with 28 pts, including 5 threes, and 6 rebs. Goodman made 9 of 13 shots for 21 pts, and also dished out 4 asts. Shewmake had 11 pts, 6 rebs, 2 blocks and 4 steals. And the point guard combination of Ever Lopez (7 pts, 6 asts) and I. Johnson (6 pts, 8 asts) was outstanding, combining for 14 assists and just 4 turnovers.
For Oxnard, Davis led the way with 27 pts, including the 6 threes, and 8 rebs. LeBlanc managed 20 pts, 3 asts and 3 steals. Black chipped in with 10 pts and 4 asts. And Wall had 13 pts and 7 rebs despite foul trouble before leaving the game after re-injuring his knee with 5:12 left when Pierces Jamelle Tolliver landed on his leg following a rebound.
