Canyons 71, Bakersfield 46 (women: BC, 90-85)

SF Carlton Spencer scored 26 pts and dished out 7 asts, and host Canyons (#8 South, #16 California, 13-7 overall, 6-0 in WSC-South) held Bakersfield (10-11, 2-4) to 4 points over the first 12-1/2 minutes of the second half to post their 8th striaght win Wednesday night.

Spencer missed his first 5 shots of the night, but made 10 of his last 12 including 5 threes to pace the Cougars. PF Cedric Davis added 11 pts and SG Curtis Dunwoody had 9. Ctr Will Broadous came off the bench to add 9 more for COC. PG Jordan Surratt had a fine game as well with 4 pts, 7 asts and just 1 turnover.

COC led by a single point at 30-29 at halftime before outscoring the Renegades 28-4 to begin the second half. The first half had been a see-saw game as each team had the lead several times, but after the break COC completely took over. Bakersfield missed its first 7 shots of the second half while committing 7 turnovers to fall behind 41-29 before Ctr Mario Malave finally broke the drought with a putback basket. But after that, the onslaught just continued as COC pushed its lead to 25 at 58-33 with under 7 minutes to play.

Malave led Bakersfield with 16 pts and also had 6 rebs. SG Tyler Monk had 13 pts including 3 threes, all in the first half. PG Marquintice Davis shot just 3 for 18 from the floor, but played hard throughout the game and finished with 9 pts, 9 rebs, 7 asts and 4 steals.

In the women's game, Ctr Sarah Ortiz' putback basket broke an 85-85 tie with just over a minute left, and PG Tayler McQuilliams had 3 FTs and a steal in the final 18 seconds to seal a 90-85 win for Bakersfield (13-8, 4-2) over host Canyons (11-10, 3-3).

Bakersfield had led most of the second half, and pushed their lead to as many as 12 points before COC ralllied to tie the game on a pair of FTs by PF Christine Raphaelian with 1:24 left. But on Bakersfield's next possession, SF Nicole Goss' shot was blocked by COC Ctr Jessi Loring, and the ball went to Ortiz, who scored to break the tie.

In the game's final seconds, COC fouled McQuilliams with the score still 87-85. McQuilliams then made the first free throw, but missed the second and Raphaelian rebounded for COC. However, McQuilliams then stole the ball back for Bakersfield. She was fouled again, and this time she made both FTs to make it 90-85 with 14 seconds left, basically sealing the win for Bakersfield.

Ortiz led Bakersfield with 26 pts and also had 9 rebs. PF Ashley Nichols had a strong game with 21 pts and 12 rebs. SF Nicole Goss had 18 pts and 13 boards. McQuilliams had just the 3 pts, but they were rather important; she also dished out a team-best 9 asts. SG Ashlee Klingenberg came off the bench to add 15 pts including 3 threes.

COC lost despite a monster game from Loring, who finished with 29 pts, 20 rebs and 5 blocked shots. PG Erica Doyle had 21 pts and 9 asts, while SF Janette Galindo posted a double-double with 11 pts and 11 rebs. And Raphaelian, despite the turnover at the end, had a marvelous game with 16 pts, 8 rebs and 5 asts.
