SF Dennis Hardwell had 16 pts and LA Harbor held Pasadena without a basket for more than 15 minutes in one stretch in a 54-47 win over the host Lancers in an SCC crossover game Wednesday night.
It was an ugly, grungy road win and a very welcome close victory for the Seahawks (13-8), who have lost 5 games by 4 points or less this season. Harbor slowed the game, particularly the first half, down to a crawl, and the Seahawks won despite shooting just 33% from the floor for the night, including a chilly 20% in the second half.
But the slow-down strategy worked well as the Seahawks held Pasadena to 26% and got to the free throw line 36 times. And the Harbor defense completely disrupted the Pasadena offense in the first half, holding the Lancers to 11 points on a mind-boggling 2 of 26 - that's seven-point-seven percent (.077) - on field goal attempts with 11 turnovers in that first half.
SF Givon Crump hit a 3-pointer on the Lancers' first possession of the night in the first minute of the game to give Pasadena (12-10) a 3-0 lead.
But then came the Pasadena nightmare sequence: a 15-minute stretch in which the Lancers missed 20 consecutive field goal attempts, mixed in 10 turnovers and even missed 4 of 6 free throw attempts until Crump scored on a putback with 3:47 left in the first half.
Meanwhile, Harbor scored at a workmanlike pace, shooting 46% in the first half and accumulating 30 points. SG Jason Daley made 2 free throws to give Harbor a ten-point lead at 15-5 with 8:13 left in the half. Two free throws by PF Bola Egbeyemi made it 17-5, and a basket by Ctr Jamal Washington made it 19-5. Two baskets by Hardwell made it 23-5.
And even after Crump's basket with 3:47 left, Daley hit a 3-pointer to push Harbor's lead to 19 at 26-7. Pasadena didn't make another basket in the first half, and went to the break trailing, 30-11, and having made just the two field goals, both by Crump.
Throughout the second half, Pasadena chipped away at the deficit, but never quite caught up. Ctr Laik Carter scored 15 seconds into the second half, breaking the Lancer drought. A 3-pointer by Crump made it 33-18 with 16:35 left. Another Crump 3-pointer made it a 12-point game at 35-23 with 13:17 left. A 3-pointer by SG Kameron Burch made it an 11-point game at 37-26 with just over 11 minutes left.
Now it was Harbor who was having trouble scoring, making just 2 of 12 shots to that point in the second half while mixing in 6 turnovers. And Pasadena crept closer when Burch scored on a putback to make it a single-digit lead at 37-28.
But Harbor maintained at least a 9-point lead until after the two-minute mark when PF Marquise Tolson stole the ball from Hardwell, who had just stolen the ball under the Harbor basket. Tolson's lay-in made it 49-42 with 1:50 left.
Down the stretch, Harbor got one free throw from Hardwell and two from Daley to make it 52-42 with 47.9 seconds left. Burch hit another 3-pointer, his 4th of the game, to make it 52-45 with 35 seconds left. And PG Jerrick Thomas scored on a lay-up with about 10 seconds left to make it 52-47.
But then Harbor finally secured the win when Egbeyemi, who had missed a pair of free throws with 12.3 seconds left, made two free throws with 5.1 seconds to go to make it a 3-possession game at 54-47. Fittingly, Pasadena's final shot of the night, a jumper by Thomas at the buzzer, fell most of the way through the basket before bouncing out as the horn sounded.
For Harbor, Hardwell had a team-high 16 pts, 5 rebs, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Ctr Kyle Reid had 10 pts and 8 rebs. Daley had 9 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals, and Egbeyemi had 8 pts. Washington came off the bench for 8 pts and 7 rebs.
For Pasadena, Burch came off the bench and led all scorers with 18 pts, including 4 threes, with 14 pts coming in the second half. Crump had 13 pts and 8 rebs. Thomas had 6 pts and a game-high 6 asts. And Tolson came off the bench for 2 pts and a game-high 10 rebs.
