Victor Joseph scored 29 pts and Chris Edward had 22 pts and 15 rebs to lead #5 Chaffey to a most impressive 89-71 victory over #2 San Bernardino Valley Saturday afternoon in a Foothill Conference showdown in Rancho Cucamonga.
Chaffey (17-5, 4-0) took over first place in the conference with the win, which snapped an 11-game win streak by the visiting Wolverines. Both teams entered the 3 pm game with designs on being the last champion of the Foothill Conference, which is in its final season this year.
Joseph staked Chaffey to an early 10-4 lead with a pair of 3-pointers, but San Bernardino Valley (22-3, 3-1) battled back with a 10-0 run, and the Wolverines led the rest of the first half. The lead reached as many as 7 points after a 3-pointer by Perris Hicks with 4:36 left in the half made it 37-30.
The SBVC lead was 5 at the halftime, and the Wolverines held a 6-point lead after Zack Rollins scored on a driving lay-up to make it 47-41.
But from that point on, Chaffey completely took over the game. The Panthers scored the game's next 11 points, starting what became a 21-4 run, and the lead continued to widen as the clock wound down.
Joseph knocked down a three and then scored on a lay-up after dribbling the length of the floor to give Chaffey a 48-47 lead with 14:53 left. Then Edward scored a pair of baskets to make it 52-47.
Joseph converted a rare 4-point play by making a 3-pointer, drawing a foul and making the resulting free throw with 11:59 left to push Chaffey's lead to 58-49. Edward made two free throws and A.J. Kirkwood made one out of two free throws to finish the run and give Chaffey a commanding 62-51 lead with 9:47 left.
But the lead continued to expand. A 3-pointer by Donavan Taylor gave Chaffey a 14-point lead at 70-56 with 6:40 left. Edward scored on a putback to make it 81-64 with just over 2 minutes left. Taylor scored on a lay-up in the final minute to push the lead to an unthinkable 20 points in the final minute before Hicks made two free throws in the final seconds to cut the final margin to 18 points.
Joseph led all scorers with his 29 pts, which included 4 three-pointers. Edward had 22 pts and a game-high 15 rebs, and Brian Beard had 15 pts, 8 asts and 3 steals. Taylor had 11 pts and 9 rebs to just miss a double-double.
For San Bernardino Valley, Hicks scored a team-high 14 pts and dished out a team-best 8 asts. Brandon Jolley scored 13 pts and Rollins had 10 before fouling out with 4:13 left. JaCardo Hawkins had a double-double with 10 pts, 13 rebs and 3 blocked shots.
