San Bernardino Valley 67, Chaffey 63 (women)

Jaysheana Martinez-Williams scored 22 pts and #13 San Bernardino Valley forced 34 turnovers in a hotly-contested 67-63 win over host Chaffey Saturday afternooon in a clash of unbeaten Foothill Conference team.

Both teams entered 3-0 in conference play on the season, and the game reflected how evenly-matched the teams were. There were 10 lead changes in all, the score was tied at 58 with under 4 minutes left and San Bernardino Valley (12-6, 4-0) didn't secure the win until Jasmine Hickey's free throw with 7.3 seconds left.

Chaffey (12-9, 3-1) led, 6-2, early on, when San Bernardino Valley went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. But Chaffey battled back to tie the score when a steal by Celestine Cazares led to a basket by Gytonne Everett with 0.7 seconds left in the first quarter. That tied the score at 12.

After Chaffey took a 13-12 lead on a free throw by Denisha Spivey, San Bernardino Valley went on a 12-0 run to take a 24-13 lead with 6:34 left in the second quarter. That gave SBVC what turned out to be the largest lead of the game, but Chaffey rallied to take a 29-28 lead at the half after Chelsea Waddy-Blow scored in the final minute of the second quarter.

San Bernardino Valley went back in front and led, 47-41 after a 3-pointer by Williams-Martinez. Chaffey ralled again, however, tying the score in the final minute of the quarter and taking a 51-49 lead when Everett made 2 free throws with 0.8 seconds left in the third quarter.

Chaffey led, 55-51, early in the fourth quarter after a jumper by Waddy-Blow. But then players started fouling out. Chaffey lost Spivey with 5:11 left, while San Bernardino Valley lost starters Ashley Carson and Sydney Gray in less than 30 seconds left that. When the dust settled, Chaffey still held a narrow 58-56 lead until Martinez-Williams scored on a putback with just under 4 minutes left to tie the score one final time.

Moments later, ReAndrene Jones broke the tie with a jumper, and Katrina Anthony followed with a basket off an assist from Hickey to make it 62-58. Alexis Frondarina answered with a three for Chaffey, but Hickey scored on a putback of her own miss and then passed to Briana Piggue on an inbounds play for a basket that gave SBVC a 66-61 lead with 1:10 remaining.

Chaffey got a basket from Mykiah Trotter with just under a minute left, and got the ball back with a chance to tie the score. But Waddy-Blow was called for an offensive foul with 10.4 seconds left, turning the ball over to SBVC. Hickey was fouled and made a free throw with 7.3 seconds left to make it 67-63 and clinch the win for SBVC.

Martinez-Williams led the winners with 22 pts, including 3 three-pointers, and she also had 6 rebs and 8 steals. Anthony had 12 pts and 5 rebs. Gray had 8 pts and a team-high 13 rebs, and Hickey had 7 pts and a team-high 6 asts. In addition to Martinez-Williams' 8 steals, SBVC got 6 steals each from Carson and Jones and had a team total of 22.

For Chaffey, Waddy-Blow scored a team-high 22 pts and also had 8 rebs and 2 blocked shots. Spivey had 14 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Frondarina had 11 pts and a team-high 6 asts. And then there was Trotter, who had 10 pts and an astounding total of 20 rebounds despite being just 5-5 in an amazing impersonation of Buck Williams (look him up on wikipedia, eh?).
