Cuesta 73, Santa Barbara 66

SG Calen Coleman had 21 pts, 16 in the second half, and PF Malte Kramer had 16 as #13 Cuesta maintained at least a share of the WSC-North lead with a 73-66 win over host Santa Barbara Saturday night.

Cuesta (16-7, 4-1) saw an 11-point first-half lead disappear, and fell behind, 46-41, early in the second half. But then the Cougars went on a 12-0 run and led the rest of the way, finally clinching the win with four free throws in the final 28.1 seconds.

Cuesta jumped out to a 16-8 lead midway through the first half, only to see Santa Barbara (3-17, 0-5) go on a 10-0 run to take an 18-16 lead. But the Cougars responded with a 14-2 run, puushing the lead to 11, after 3-pointers by Kramer and Coleman, with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Santa Barbara cut the deficit to four points at halftime to trail, 31-27, and tied the score on a 3-point play by SF Scott Burrows with 17:08 that made it 36-36. The Vaqueros took a 39-38 lead on a 3-point field goal by Burrows moments later, and yet another Burrows 3-pointer broke a 41-all tie. Then a lay-up by Ctr Michael Hansen made it 46-41 with just under 14 minutes left in the game.

Then came Cuesta's 12-0 run, with the Cougars taking a 49-46 lead on a 3-pointer by SG Jertemy Landenbergue and pushing the lead to seven on a pair of baskets by Ctr Nick Sauer that made it 53-46 with 9:40 left. A 3-pointer by PG Denis Dobkowski-Rylko eventually pushed the lead to eight points at 58-50.

Santa Barbara rallied again, cutting the deficit to three points on a baseline jumper by SG John Dodson with 48.8 seconds left that made it 69-66. But Dodson was whistled for a foul with 28.1 seconds left, and Landerbergue made a pair of free throws to make it 71-66. PG Kenny Robinson made two more free throws with 13.2 seconds left to make it 73-66 and seal the win for the Cougars.

Coleman finished with 21 pts, including 3 threes, on 8-for-11 from the floor and also had 4 rebs and 4 asts. Kramer had 16 pts, including 3 threes, plus 5 rebs and 4 asts. Landenbergue came off the bench for 12 pts, 5 rebs and 4 asts, and Sauer had 9 pts and 6 rebs. Cuesta shot 51% from the floor for the night.

For Santa Barbara, Burrows led the way with 20 pts, including 4 threes, coming off the bench. PG Robert Cid and PF Eric Becker had 11 pts each. PG Alex DiManno came off the bench for 2 pts and added game-highs of 6 asts and 4 steals. But SBCC shot 43% from the floor and was outrebounded, 37-25, on the night.
