
Angelica Sahagun had 25 points and Jazzmyn Davis had 19 as College of the Canyons rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat Santa Monica, 80-75, Wednesday night in Santa Clarita.
Canyons (12-10, 2-3) started out well enough, building a 19-12 lead midway through the first half. But then Santa Monica got three 3-pointers from Micaela Whalen to take a 21-19 lead.
Santa Monica (7-13, 1-3) finished the first half with an 18-2 run to lead by 18 points at 45-27 at the break. Jasmyn White and Trayona Thomas each hit 3-pointers in the final two minutes to highlight the run.
Canyons erased most of the deficit in the first seven minutes, cutting the margin to a single point after a 3-pointer by Bev Weaver with 13:10 left, but failed to pull even. Two baskets by Katt Johnson restored order for Santa Monica, which continued to hold a narrow lead for the next few minutes.
Canyons finally took a lead when Weaver hit another 3-pointer to give the home team a 64-63 lead. Then Sahagun scored off a pass from Davis after a steal to make it 66-63 wiith 6:23 left. A pair of free throws by Amanda Ajdari pushed Canyons' lead to five at 68-63 with 5:36 left.
Santa Monica never caught up after that, but cut the deficit back to three points on a lay-up by Johnson that made it 73-70. Sahagun scored on a lay-up with 25 seconds left and split two free throws to make it 76-70, but Johnson hit a 3-pointer for Santa Monica to make it 76-73 with 9 seconds left.
Then Ajdari scored on an outlet pass from Davis to make it 78-73 to seemingly clinch the win for Canyons. But Cherifa Chatti scored on an outlet pass from Johnson moments later to make it 78-75. Two free throws by Ajdari with one second left finally sealed the deal for Canyons, making it 80-75.
Sahagun led all scorers with 25 points, and Davis had a huge game with 19 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals for Canyons. Ajdari had 12 points and a game-high 7 assists. Hope Smith had a huge game off the bench with 6 pts, 10 rebs, 3 asts and 3 blocked shots.
For Santa Monica, Johnson led the way with 23 pts, 11 rebs, 4 asts, 2 blocks and 7 steals while attempting a mind-boggling total of 38 shots. Thomas had 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. White had 15 pts and 3 asts before fouling out with 18 seconds left. Whalen had 12 points, all on 3-pointers and all in the first half.

Canyons led by 7 at 19-12. Santa Monica got 3 threes from Whalen to take a 21-12 lead, and finished the half with an 18-2 run to lead by 17 at the break.
