LA Pierce 75, Ventura 66

Trey Archambeau scored a season-high 27 pts and LA Pierce went on a decisive 14-0 run in the second half of a 75-66 win over visiting Ventura Saturday afternoon in WSC-North action in Woodland Hills.

Archambeau scored 5 of his points during the run, which transformed a slim 48-47 advantage into a commanding 15-point lead for the Brahmas (11-10, 3-1) midway through the second half. The closest Ventura (7-12, 0-3) got after that was the final 9-point margin, which came only after a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game.

Pierce jumped out to a 16-7 lead after a 3-point play by Archambeau, who had scored 10 of the Brahmas' points at that juncture, just 7:48 into the game. But Jalon Wilson hit consecutive 3-pointers to get Ventura back into the game, and the Pirates tied the score at 20 on a baseline jumper by Nathaniel Claxton midway through the half.

Pierce went back in front on another basket by Archambeau, who pushed the Brahma lead to six points at 28-22 with a slam dunk at the 5-minute mark and a free throw with 4:19 left in the first half. A 3-pointer by Quincy Moore late in the half pushed Pierce's lead to seven points, but amother three by Wilson just ahead of the halftime horn brought Ventura within four points at 38-34 at the break.

Moore scored on a 4th-chance putback to push Pierce's lead back to seven points early in the second half at 48-41. Ventura erased most of that deficit when Wilson was fouled attempting a 3-point shot and made all three free throws and Eric Davis converted a traditional 3-point play with 12:59 left to make it a one-point game at 48-47.

But then came the 14-0 run, which started with a 3-pointer by J.R. Williams. Then Archambeau scored five straight points. Devron Reynolds hit a pull-up jumper to make it 59-47 with 8:01 left, and Lorenzo Goines finished the run with a 3-pointer. Ventura never really threatened to get back into the game after that.

Archambeau led all scorers with his 27 pts, which came on 10-for-15 from the floor, and his 8 rebs tied for team-high. Reynolds had 16 pts, 8 rebs, 2 asts and 3 steals. Williams had 11 pts, 6 rebs and a game-high 7 asts.

For Ventura, Wilson scored a team-high 18 pts on 5-for-6 from the floor, including 5 three-pointers. He also added 3 asts and 2 steals, but left the game late in the second half with an apparent leg injury. Davis had 13 pts, 7 rebs and a game-high 5 blocked shots. Toure Atwater had 11 pts and Vondel Faniel had 8 pts and a game-high 12 rebs.
