Neika Puryear's baseline jumper with 2.2 seconds left lifted #3 San Bernardino Valley to a dramatic 60-59 win over host #14 Antelope Valley Wednesday night in Foothill Conference action in Lancaster.
After seeing a 19-point lead with under 14 minutes disappear, San Bernardino Valley (15-3, 3-0) was rescued by Puryear's jumper off a pass from April Fultz. Fultz also blocked AVC's last-ditch half-court desperation shot as time expired.
Anttanisha Moton had given Antelope Valley (12-6, 2-1) a 59-58 lead on a free throw with 9.1 seconds left, capping a magnificent comeback by AVC over the final fourteen minutes. Malika Jackson had scored on a driving lay-up to lift AVC into a 58-all tie with 19.1 seconds left.
For most of the game, it looked like SBVC would need no such late-game heroics. SBVC jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and pushed the margin to 13 at 30-17 after an 8-0 run later in the first half. At halftime, SBVC held a 14-point lead at 33-19.
Then in the second half, SBVC pushed its lead to 17 points after a basket by Kori Walker with 14:22 left and to 19 at 47-28 after a short jumper by Brittany Brown with 13:54 left in the game.
AVC cut the deficit to eight points at 51-43 after a free throw by Ashleigh Wilson with 5:54 left. But then Fultz scored on a putback after a steal by Brown to push the SBVC back to double digits at 54-43 with just under five minutes to go, seemingly restoring order for SBVC.
But AVC kept rallying. Two free throws by Moton made it 54-45 with 4:27 left. Then Phillisha McFadden scored on a runner to make it 54-47 with 3:48 left. Two free throws by McFadden made it 54-49 with 3:35 left, and a putback basket by Moton made it 54-51 with 2:35 left.
SBVC pushed the margin back to five on a basket by Latice Butler with 58.6 seconds left that made it 58-53. But a 3-pointer by Wilson just over six seconds later brought AVC within two points at 58-56. Then, after an SBVC turnover, Jackson tied it with 19.1 seconds left. And after another SBVC turnover with 10.9 seconds left, AVC took the lead after Moton was inexplicably fouled by Darsha Burnside about 70 feet away from the basket with 9.1 seconds left.
But Puryear's clutch jumper took Burnside and the rest of the SBVC team off the hook. Fultz dribbled the ball into the frontcourt and found Puryear along the left baseline and delivered the ball perfectly. The 5-5 freshman came through with the winning jumper, lifting SBVC to the win.
Four players scored in double figures for SBVC. Fultz had 11 pts, 3 rebs, 5 asts, 3 blocks and 4 steals, and Wilson came off the bench for 11 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals. Puryear had 10 pts and 4 asts, and Butler also had 10 pts. Burnside had 5 pts, a game-high 10 rebs, a game-high 5 blocks and 3 steals.
For AVC, Wilson led the way with 14 pts and she also had 6 rebs, 3 asts, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Moton had 13 pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Jackson had 12 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts, 2 steals and a block. Maurisha McKissic had 8 pts and a team-high 9 rebs.
