Monterey Peninsula 68, Redwoods 55

Monterey Peninsula overcame a frigid start got a key pair of 3-pointers from SF Zen Maki that keyed a 16-2 run over the last five-plus minutes and got past College of the Redwoods, 68-55, in the consolation final of the 2012 West Valley Holiday tournament.

On a cold Sunday, Monterey Peninsula (5-7) matched the weather early on, missing its first 12 shots from the floor. That allowed Redwoods (5-6) to jump out to an early 12-2 lead.

SG Hayden Mislavsky scored on a putback of the Lobos' 12th miss with 12:03 left in the first half, and that sparked a 14-2 run that saw Monterey Peninsula take a 20-18 lead after a basket by Ctr Ivo Basor with 6:20 left in the first half.

Redwoods answered with a 7-0 run, going back in front on two free throws by SF Dylan Ingersoll. Ingersoll followed that with a 3-pointer to push the Corsair lead to 25-20. MPC got within a point in the final minute of the half before PF Christian Enos hit a short jumper just before the halftime horn to give Redwoods a 33-30 lead at the break.

Monterey Peninsula took a 37-36 lead early in the second half on a 3-pointer by PF Adam Myren, and pushed its lead to 44-37 after jumpers by Basor and PG Joseph Lampkin.

Redwoods rallied from that deficit, cutting the margin to a single point after a 3-pointer by Ingersoll that made it 48-47. The Corsairs also trailed by a point at 50-49 and 52-51, and by two points at 54-52.

Then Maki, who had missed his first 10 shots of the game, drained consecutive 3-pointers to push Monterey Peninsula's lead to 60-52. Basor scored off a pass from Mislavsky to make it 62-52 with just under 5 minutes left.

Redwoods got a free throw from Ctr Jon Losa, but Mislavsky hit a 3-pointer to push the Lobo lead to a dozen at 65-53. PF Stephen Dorsey made three of four free throws to push the lead to 68-53, sealing the win for Monterey Peninsula.

Basor led all scorers with 16 pts on 8-for-13, coming off the bench for foul-plagued Ctr Richard Meek. Mislavsky had 14 pts, 11 in the first half, plus 7 rebs, 3 asts and a steal. Meek just missed a double-double with 12 pts and a game-high 9 rebs despite the foul trouble; he fouled out with 2:58 to go. And Maki had 9 pts, 4 asts, 3 rebs, 2 steals and a blocked shot despite the tough time shooting (he was 2-for-13).

For Redwoods, 5-7 PG Beau Gastineau had a huge game with 15 pts and a game-high 7 asts. Losa had 12 pts, 7 rebs, 3 blocks and 2 steals, though most of that came in the first half. Ingersoll had 10 pts, including the Corsairs' only two three-pointers, plus 7 rebs.

After the slow start, Monterey Peninsula made 24 of its 44 shots (55%) the rest of the game. On the other hand, Redwoods shot just 28% (7-for-28) in the second half, during which the Corsairs were outscored, 38-22.
