Cypress 64, Miramar 57

Austin Payne came off the bench for 18 pts, including 4 three-pointers, and Cypress held off a second-half rally from Miramar to post a 64-57 win at the SBCC Classic in Santa Barbara.

Cypress (4-6) dominated for a 13-minute stretch of the game, which bridged over halftime, outscoring Miramar (4-6) 29-7 over that period of time. So even though the Jets had the better of things for two-thirds of the game, they were unable to catch up.

But then Cypress went on a 9-0 run, taking a 18-16 lead after a steal & lay-up by Jeremy Wright, which started what eventually became the extended run. The Chargers led, 33-23, at the half.

When the second half started, Jordan Fleck drained a 3-pointer and Isaiah Taylor scored off a pass from Wright, pushing Cypress' lead to 38-23 with 18 minutes left.

Miramar rallied to cut the margin to five points with 5:23 left, but never quite caught up. It was still a 5-point game until Fleck made two free throws for Cypress with 1:03 left to make it 60-53. Wright made two free throws with 24.2 seconds left, and Payne scored off an outlet pass from Nolan Kelly with 16.7 seconds left to clinch the win.

Payne led all scorers with his 18 pts, which came on 6-for-9 from the floor, and he added 3 rebs and 2 blocked shots.
