Genies Stumble to 4th Place Finishes at Thunder Tournament

The routes taken were different, but the final destination the same for the Genies 11s and 13s at the Thunder Tip-Off tournament held March 10-12, as both squads finished in 4th place in their respective age groups. For the Genies 13s this was the first tournament opportunity to see how they would fare without point guard Tara Rickenbach, who is out 6-8 weeks with a broken ankle. Although the girls put together a 3-2 record in the 12-team field, it was a disappointing outcome for a team accustomed to reaching the finals in most every tournament they attend. Game one set the tone early for how the Genies would play in both of their tournament losses: an excessive amount of turnovers from the guard positions, and poor rebounding from the post players. The ultimate result was a 43-25 defeat to the up-and-coming DFAC Falcons squad, a team which shows every indication of being a major force in the coming months, and which ultimately won the tournament championship. Cara Bomar paced the Genies with nine points. The Genies bounced back with three consecutive victories beginning with a one-sided 68-12 victory over the Air Angels. Mackenzie Flannigan (16), Bomar (12), Alyssa Heeman (11) and Ashton Jones (10) all posted double-figure scoring totals. Wins over the Arizona Platinum (45-23, Jones 18 points) and Arizona Premier (33-31, Jones 11 points) followed, moving the Genies into an early Sunday morning match-up with the host Thunder. There the Thunder, a team the Genies had defeated by 26 points in their last tournament, jumped to an early lead and never looked back before closing out a 43-28 win and eliminating the Genies from the tournament. Jones again led the Genies in scoring with seven points. For the five-game tournament Jones was the Genies statistical leader with 49 points, 30 rebounds, one assist and five steals for 85 Total Stats. She was followed by Flannigan (37+33+6+7=83TS), Heeman (33+11+20+12=76TS), Bomar (34+20+5+7=66TS), Amberlee Tialino (11+12+14+18=55TS), Shana Davis (22+25+2+4=53TS) and Kelsi Haugo (12+5+4+7=28TS). The Genies 13s overall record now stands at 11-8. The Genies 11s opened the 10-team tournament Friday evening with an impressive 42-21 victory over the Arizona Elite. Tessa Smith led the team in scoring with nine points. On Saturday the Genies defeated the North Country Spirit (43-23) behind Rebecca Rudd’s 12-point and Smith’s 10-point efforts; lost to the Arizona Thunder (34-21, Smith six points); and again defeated the Elite (43-35, Smith 10 points). That final victory moved the Genies into a Sunday morning encounter with California’s Yorba Linda Thunder. The back-and-forth contest was eventually won by the Thunder by a count of 23-18. Rebecca Rudd and Candice Bomar each tallied five points to lead the Genies. For the five-game tournament Kishan Cooper was the Genies statistical leader with 25 points, 46 rebounds, 13 steals and six assists for 92 Total Stats. She was followed by Smith (36+34+2+3=75TS), Rebecca Rudd (29+16+3+14=62TS), Alex Nicholls (21+15+4+12=52TS), Elizabeth Rudd (16+19+3+5=43TS), Candice Bomar (25+3+2+5=35TS) and Ashlin Palmer (15+7+4+7=33TS). The Genies 11s overall record now stands at 15-9.
