Pedro Martinez struck out 10 batters at Tiger Stadium where the Lake Erie
Indians beat the San Francisco club by the score of 12 to 5.
Martinez(1-0) pitched a solid game. He went 6 and 2/3 innings surrendering 6
hits and 3 walks. The Lake Erie offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9
innings.
Mariano Rivera was credited with his 1st save. Sterling Hitchcock(0-1) was
the losing pitcher. He allowed Lake Erie 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings of
work.
Martinez was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little
odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a
running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
