*NATIONAL POLL CHAMPIONS BY CONFERENCE (1936-2002):
(NOTE: The Associated Press and United Press International began selecting national champs in 1936. Prior to that, champions were selected by retro mathematical ratings, retro polls and historical research. In 1992 the UPI stopped its poll and the American Football Coaches Association switched to the USA Today/CNN/ESPN poll. These numbers reflect only the selections made by these two polls, AP and UPI, although others have been used. From 1936-1965, selections were made prior to the bowl games, but both polls have selected after bowl games since 1968. The number of champions by conference reflect only teams who were members of the conference at the time. For example, Michigan State's 1952 title came one year before formally joining the Big Ten, and Penn State won two titles prior to joining the Big Ten.)
