CLASS OF 2003 VIRGINIA TARGETS

Luol Deng, 6-7 WF/PF, Blair HS, Blairstown, NJ. High-riser has top ten potential according to many scouting services. Brother of former UConn player Ajou Ajou Deng is being recruited by virtually every school on the east coast. Duke, UNC, Virginia and Maryland appear to lead the pack.

Omari Isreal, 6-8 WF/PF, Good Counsel HS, Wheaton, MD. Versatile prospect may ultimately play wing forward, power forward, or a little of both in college. Plays for same HS that Virginia star Roger Mason, Jr., attended. Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, Kentucky, and Miami-FL are all involved.

Marcus Sikes, 6-6 WF/PF, Notre Dame Academy, Middleburg, VA. Turned a lot of heads on the AAU circuit in the spring of '01 and has a number of ACC schools interested. Excellent around the hoop, developing perimeter skills. Virginia was first to offer.

Brad Byerson, 6-8 PF/WF, Thomas Dale HS, Chester, VA. Has played exclusively in the post in HS, but demonstrated versatility at the ABCD camp. Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland, among others, are involved.

Will Sheridan, 6-8 PF/C, Sanford HS, Hockessin, DE. Strong player with good post-up scoring and rebounding skills. Several ACC and Big East schools are evaluating.

CLASS OF 2004 VIRGINIA TARGETS

Marquie Cooke, 6-3 PG/WG, Nansemond River HS, Suffolk, VA. Rock-solid floor general who has drawn favorable comparisons to John Gilchrist at the same stage from many Hampton Roads observers. Virginia, Duke, UNC, Tennessee and other elite programs have already noticed.

NOTES

- Congratulations to Derrick Byars and the Ridgeway Roadrunners. Virtually no one thought they could do it, but they captured the title at the 2001 Holiday Hoops Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Ridgeway took down Beaumont-Ozen from the Houston area in the final game by a count of 54-51. Beaumont-Ozen had not lost in two seasons, was ranked fifth in the most recent edition of USA Today's Super 25, and features 6-10 super-junior Kendrick Perkins, who is widely regarded as the top big man from Texas since Shaquille O'Neal, one of the top two players in the junior class (LeBron James being the other), and a sure-fire straight-to-the-NBA candidate. This championship is a great feather in Ridgeway's cap. Hats off to the Roadrunners, who made a powerful statement to the nation this weekend. (12/16/01)

- It may sound silly to refer to a kid who just started his sophomore year as a recruiting target, but yes, the 2004 target section was added today. Marquie Cooke is the first entry in that section. In the Winter edition of their Recruiters' Handbook, PrepStars lists Cooke as the #28 player in the sophomore class. It's still way too early for rankings of that class to have any meaningful value, as the fortunes of many, many players will rise and fall over the next two years, but Cooke has the look of a big-time prospect. Virginia, UNC, Duke, Tennessee, and several other heavyweights have already noticed. (12/13/01)

- Best wishes to Derrick Byars and Ridgeway HS for a safe and successful trip to northwestern Arkansas. The Roadrunners will compete in the three-day Holiday Hoops Classic at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville. Games begin today. (12/13/01)

- Derrick Byars has been selected as
the top player in the Shelby-Metro area by the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The Ridgeway Roadrunners, Byars' team, checks in at #3 in the Commercial Appeal's pre-season "Dandy Dozen." (11/18/01)

- J.R. Reynolds is beginning to receive some attention on the national scene. FoxSports.com's Frank Burlison ranks Reynolds #17 in the junior class, while PrepStars' Brick Oettinger lists Reynolds #45. (10/16/01)
