Fishing with Pellets and Boilies

Hi, my name is Michael Koester and I live in Germany. I am 31 years old and I have been fishing for 25 years. I was involved in match fishing for bream and tench for over 10 years. Since 1991 I have fished mostly for carp, but I still enjoy fishing for bream, tench and roach.

I have learned many things that are valuable to the sport of carp fishing eg. Prebaiting, flavour tactics etc. European carp anglers fish with boilies for bait to avoid takes from non target species. When fishing with feeders or groundbait in general you will more often than not end up catching bream or tench rather than carp. This is due to the fact that these species ore more numerous and less wary than carp and simply beat the carp to the hookbait.

So what do you do?

The situation in North America is a bit different. You have a good population of carp with fewer nuisance fish (other than the odd bullhead or channel cat. yes they love your boilies!!). I have learned much about North American carp fishing methods in my last two trips to USA and Canada. I have noticed that one of the most popular methods is to feed (chum) with corn and to use corn or other baits as hookbaits (pop-ups, pastes etc.).

Corn is one of the best carpbaits in the world !! But sometimes it is not as instant bait as one I would like and you still have to attract the carp to the to the hookbait to get a bite.

A very simple and really deadly alternative is fishing with pellets. These can be trout pellets or if they are availible carp pellets. Cast these pellets out in your swim with a spod and create an „area of attraction". The Pellets will dissolve and produce a very „instant" feedin attraction for the carp. Carp will beginn to feed in this area but won´t be able to get enough actualparticles to fill up on. This produces a reaction in the carp by which they begin to vacum up everything in the area in their search for the „food" which they can taste in the area. Hopefully a real feeding frenzy!!!

Now its time for a boilie! Use the same pellet and make a paste out of it by adding an egg and mold the paste llets hat you are doing on the bank, make you a better angler, and will help you catch some real biggies!

Tightlines and a wet sling!
