Ryan was born in Leicester on the 13th of January 1981. He signed as a trainee at Blackburn rovers on the 1st of August 2000, then moved to Bolton Wanderers on a free on the 1st of March 2001. He played regularly for Bolton in the reserves but in the 2001/02 season was hampered with injury.  Ryan signed a 3 year deal for United on the 9th of August 2002.

His debut came in the first game of the season, at home to Hartlepool and although the game was lost 0-2  Ryan's speed and ability to beat defenders was a bright spot in the game. The next game, away at Southend saw Ryan show all his skills, those fans who made the long journey down to Roots Hall came back full of  praise at the way he  had caused total confusion in the Shrimpers defence. SadlyRgames002.jpg (47272 bytes) the young winger then pulled a hamstring which restricted his appearances for most of the winter months.  The game away at Torquay on the 26th of April saw him back to his best, using his speed and trickery to beat Torquay's defence and winning crucial free kicks.

With a settled preseason and fully fit, Ryan will be an important member of the squad next season.
