Mattie was born in Stockport on the 8th of October 1978.  He signed for Bolton as a trainee on the 1st of August 1997. Unable to break through into the first team he had loan spells at Port Vale, Stockport And Bristol Rovers before Ian Atkins, acting on Mark Prudhoe's recommendation, signed him for Carlisle United on the 10th of November 2000, on a season long loan. His first game for United was at Brunton Park against Southend United on the 11th of November and from that game on Mattie was ever present between the sticks until the end of the season.  Hopes were high that Mattie would sign a permanent deal but the money wasn't forthcoming from the Knighton regime and Mattie signed for Hull City in a £50,000 move on the 14th of June 2001.

Mattie played 42 games in all for Hull City. His time there was blighted with injury and he had experienced keeper Paul Musselwhite vying for his place.  Ironically at the start of this season Matties first clean sheet for the Tigers was to be the 4-0 win against Carlisle at Boothferry Park on the 14th of September. Rumours continued to circulate that United were trying to get the 'big fella' back and these were confirmed on the 18th of October when Mattie signed a  3 year deal.CUFCvHaHartlepoolThreeGames010.jpg (44848 bytes)

Making his debut away at Macclesfield on the 19th of October, a 2-2 draw, Mattie was ever present between the sticks until the final game of the season when Peter Keen deputised.  There were few games where Mattie did not pull off at least one spectacular save, including gathering a number of penalty shots in safe hands.

A very popular player Mattie commands the box, and is particularly reliable on crosses.  United are in the lucky position of having two good keepers to rely on.
