The desert sun hammered down on us, casting rock-like shadows on the infield and softer shades on the thick green grass of the outfield, but there was a warm breeze blowing out toward centerfield and beyond, where a little windmill spun and glittered in the sunshine. In the stands we yelled happily and almost impartially, admiring the ballplayers and the close, meaningless, money-free game, not wanting it to end.
