Energy (Sakthi) shares with Voidness (Siva) the characteristics of light, existence, awareness, wisdom, bliss. Two qualities that are Sakthi's alone are audibility (sound) and vibration (movement).

These two give rise in turn to phenomena (name and form) in the same way that a tuning fork, when struck, gives rise to waves (name and form) in a previously-calm bowl of water.

The primal sound is represented by the syllable "Aum" or "Om." This original, unstruck sound is the Mother of the universe. It acts on the Void to organize it into matter (mater, Mother), hold it in existence for a while, and return it to cosmic dissolution or Voidness (from the Father we came; to the Father we return -- ashes to ashes, dust into dust).

When we repeat Om, we harmonize ourselves, if even for a brief instant, with the rhythm of life, with the creative, primal vibration that the Mother is. For a moment we lose our small individuality and become one with the Word of God, the Sound in the Silence, the Voice in the Wilderness.

Eventually, Sakthi lifts aside the hem of Her garment of illusion and reveals Siva to us. By doing this, the Mother takes the Child to the Father. The primal creative vibration Om loosens the knot in consciousness called the "ego" and releases the drop of awareness into the Ocean of Awareness, blissful, liberated, immortal.

Om takes the rust off the metal, allowing the Holy Magnet to draw it in. Om removes the dust from the mirror, allowing it to reflect the Eternal Light. Om, which coated us in matter in the first place, now serves as the final, universal cleanser, returning us to our native lustre as our Original Self, the Atma.
