How to Handle Death

Life

Life is an unknown quantity. Even we here do not analyze, nor control, nor dissect, nor understand. It is! That is all. Now what are we to do with it? Earthbound minds are dealing with earthly materials: money, food, / dress. But all of these are like vanishing shadows to us. What then shall we do with this wonderful extension of our powers and existence? Forever! Think of it! To go on and on! (Unnamed spirit teacher in SWSL, 80-1.)

What is life? … It is like the answer we have to give in regard to the Supreme Deity: It is! That is all we know. God is life, and life is the gift of God. What this most subtle, most unseeable, most elusive — No, we cannot discover it. It simply is! That is all. Some philosophers and scientists may think they know, but they do not. It is the riddle of the universe, and only the Creator of the universe holds the secret in his soul.

All life is of spirit origin though manifesting itself in such manifold and even grotesque forms. The wide diversity comes from the material envelope, and in what Darwin called adaptation to environment. Spirit is indestructible, not subject to disease or death. But the earthly form in which for a time it manifests itself, may be subject to all the accidents and disease of mortal existence.

I do not know all universes, nor all the ways of life in them; but I think all immortal spirits are always first in human form, and subject to material conditions, and come out of these conditions according to the laws of spiritual evolution. Life here is still progressing to higher forms, and will finally reach a perfection as yet undreamed even by us of the lower planes. (Unnamed spirit teacher in SWSL, 83.)

Your individual life commenced with your soul or spirit, which holds the germ of immortal life. The germ of that soul may have started far back, even in the animal creation. But germs are not souls and the animal is not the man. For all practical purposes, and / for all knowledge of life as we see it, your individual life commenced with your birth. To go back of that leads into such obscurity and confusion that it is hardly worth while.

This reply did not satisfy our curiosity, and shortly afterward we asked Prof. James of our origin. Where were we before birth? He replied rather decidedly:

"Give it up. We have to. There is a limit to our knowledge for which we at present ought to be thankful." (Unnamed spirit teacher and Prof. William James in SWSL, 83-4.)

You must remember that we are not conversant with all the problems of all the truths made known to more advanced students. We learn much, but each circle takes up different studies largely of their own choosing. I have not been particularly interested in the query of the 'whence,' as you put it; the 'whither' attracts me more. (Mary Bosworth in SWSL, 84.)

Nothing has a “real” existence unless it is vitalized by and in harmony with the creative source and not merely caused to move by entities who are misusing such creative force as they still possess. (Philip Gilbert in PTS, 54.)

Views of Death

I used to shrink from what I called death. There are those on this side who shrink from what they call death. Do you know what they call death? It is rebirth into the world. Yes, even so. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXII.)

Death is a graduation. It means that one has done all he was supposed to do or wanted to do, and that there is no longer any need to remain on the physical plane during that specific incarnation. As the seed “graduates” into the plant, and the plant into the flower, and the continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth continues, so you should … rejoice for those who “die,” for they are no longer limited by the physical realm.

It is, in fact, more difficult to be born that to die. When the soul is born into the earth plane he must once again lower his rate of vibration, begin the heavy task ahead, and know that he has to follow through and grow, earning his way through life. At death he may return once more to a higher and finer vibration. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 4.)

What you see as “life” and “death” are different rates of vibration in a continual process of growth and unfoldment. The Life Energy, or God, underlies all experiences of “life” and “death” and is the Changeless. As you begin to understand the Energy behind all appearances, all cycles and stages of growth, all transitions, you begin to identify with the Process rather than its manifestations. You begin to identify with the eternal nature of your being, rather than the stages you are going through. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 4.)

Q: Is death the same for everyone?

A: No, it is not. It is dependent upon how you have prepared yourself during that incarnation, how old a soul you [in terms of evolution] whether it must be a physical death with suffering, where you must learn to endure pain and build strength and courage or whether it is one which you have earned that is relatively fast and painless.

It is what the soul needs to experience that will determine his own particular exit from the physical vehicle. Know that whatever way you leave the earth plane has been chosen by your soul and agreed upon. It is not a punishment if you have to go through long periods of suffering and pain. It is allowing you to work through this with kindness, compassion for those around you, understanding, courage and strength. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 42.)

How awful a sight is the human race! Nothing you have ever said, or written, or dreamed could adequately express the sense of the horror of the sum of misery and anguish that prevails in the world by the presence of Death. By sin came death, Christ came to triumph over both. But He has not triumphed if those who call themselves by His name have no realizing sense of the immortality of their loved ones. Christ destroyed the dim veil that sin drew between the two worlds. Christ opened up the spirit-world to those on earth. But since His time that veil has been gradually restored, until now Death is as palpable a separation as it was in the pagan day. That is to be changed, and you are charged with one great part of the work of changing it. It is a proud privilege, a glorious opportunity. Go back, not as one who sorrows for the dead who are lost, but one who rejoices for the lost who are found. (Julia Ames, AD, 58.) By what you call Death we have come into a far closer, more intimate realization of His presence, of His Life in us, and our Life in Him. (Julia Ames, AD, 146.)

Earth’s Lack of Knowledge of Death is Appalling

In the world in which once I so gladly took my place, the dead have few rights for their existence goes unrecognized and no psychologies prepare them for the transitions that occur as the soul moves into realms for which no earthly education can prepare it. (William James, ADJ, 21.)

You little realize the need for work to make the people understand. We see the effects of this wave of materialism in the souls who come to us. We have no trouble with those who have some spiritual thought. But how few these are! (Spirit Control Mary Bosworth to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 137.)

When a man dies he has to learn everything anew. He is a like a child in regard to many things that we are acquainted with and has to be instructed in the most ordinary subjects. For instance, he learns an entirely new means of locomotion; he finds that he requires no food and cannot understand how he is to live and what he is to do. He may want to go to bed, but he finds that he is never tired and it is never dark – there being no day or night in the spirit world – which, of course, puzzles him exceedingly. Again, he wonders where his friends are for he very often does not realize that he is dead at all. (Unnamed spirit communicator in SRE, 57.)

There is an enormous number of people throughout the entire earth that prefers to leave the whole subject of an ‘after life’ alone. These people regard it as an unhealthy subject and treat the very thought of ‘death’ as morbid. If such people were truly honest with themselves they would admit that such a state of mind merely increases their fear of ‘death’ and the ‘hereafter,’ instead of reducing it. They believe that by sweeping the question completely from their minds they will also have dismissed the real fear that so many people have – an instinct, they would say, of self-preservation. …

The average earth-dweller has no notion what kind of place ‘the next world’ can possibly be, usually because he has not given much thought to the matter. How those very same people regret their indifference when they eventually arrive here in the spirit world! ‘Why,’ they cry, ‘were we not told about this before we came here?’ (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 12.)

When I contemplated a future state of existence I thought – and that vaguely – of what the Church had taught me on the subject, which was infinitesimally small and mostly incorrect. I did not realize the closeness of the two worlds – our and yours – although I had ample demonstrations of it. What occult experiences I had were brought about, so I thought, by some extension of natural laws and they were rather to be considered incidental than of regular occurrence, given to the few rather than to the many. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 7.)

To have followed my own inclinations [and accepted my clairvoyant experiences of the spirit world] would have entailed a complete upheaval in my life, a renunciation of orthodoxy and most probably a great material sacrifice, since I had established a second reputation as a writer. What I had already written would then have become worthless in the eyes of my readers and I should have been regarded as a heretic or a madman. The greatest opportunity of my earthly life I thus let pass.

How great was that opportunity and how great were my loss and regret, I knew when I had passed into this world whose inhabitants I had already seen so many times and on so many different occasions. The truth was within my grasp and I let it fall. I adhered to the Church. Its teachings had obtained too great a hold upon me. I saw thousands believing as I did and I took courage from that, as I could not think that they could all be wrong. I tried to separate my religious life from my psychic experiences and to treat them as having no connection with one another. It was difficult, but I managed to steer a course that gave me the least mental disturbance and so I continued to the end, when at last I stood upon the threshold of that world of which I had already had a glimpse. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 9.)

Transitions have been taking place since the world began thousands of centuries ago, but mankind in general is content to remain in ignorance of what is to happen to him when he leaves the earth for the spirit world. He either asserts that it is impossible to know or else he prefers to abide in his ignorance. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 30.)

The whole process of leaving the earth - of dying – is a perfectly natural one. It is merely the operation of a natural law. But for thousands of years the generality of people have lived in entire ignorance of the truth of ‘dying’ and of the ‘hereafter.’ And in this, as in so many cases, ignorance, or lack of knowledge, means fear. It is fear of the future following upon ‘death’ that has surrounded the act of transition with so many mournful and morbid solemnities and doleful trappings. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 14.)

Was anyone ever so ill-equipped for a journey as the average person for the journey into the spirit lands?

It is a journey that all, all must take, and how many even bother to think about it during their earthly life?

This voyage is inevitable, without failure, but so many thousands of people are perfectly content to dismiss from their minds all thought of it until the time comes to take it. Many have no chance even at the last moment to think about it, so sudden is their transition.

How many people living on earth would be foolish enough to undertake a journey with their eyes blindfolded, not knowing how far they were travelling, or whence, or to what conditions of living? Yet so many are willing to embark upon the first great voyage of their lives in absolute ignorance of all these factors. We in the spirit world are constantly seeing these bewildered souls arriving and we do our best for them. We have then no need to chide them for they are the first to blame themselves. And as often in not, they do so in good, round terms! (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 21.)

[The spirit rest homes] are a standing monument of shame to the earth world, that they should be obliged to exist at all. Passings may be sudden and violent – that is inevitable at present – but it is to the eternal shame of the earth world that so many souls should arrive here in woeful ignorance of what lies before them. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 169.)

The Importance of Knowing about the After-Life

It is important that the truth about this afterlife should become widely known. This knowledge will perhaps do more to arouse mankind to their need of God than anything else could do. (Gordon Burdick to Grace Rosher in TR, 63.)

If only knowledge of the laws and conditions of spirit life were universally diffused throughout the earth world, what a wealth of difference it would make to each soul as he came to reside in these lands. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 21.)

The veil between the worlds must be rent asunder (or dissolved as you suggest). People living on earth, the erudite, the cultured and clever minds, as / well as the devotional and religious minds, and the uneducated, the illiterate and then closed minds, must all be reached. All need this knowledge to remove fear which is one of the darkest and most powerful earth-emotions which has to be fought and conquered before peace and progress can come to the earth. (Frances Banks, TOL, 79-80.)

We are among those who on earth did not believe in this farther life. We lived a material existence in a material world, and looked forward to the long, long, unbroken sleep. When we came here we did pass into a long sleep, but awakened to conditions and possibilities for which we were not prepared, and another long time of unhappiness awaited us before we began to see the orderliness of spirit progression. Then we began, perhaps you might call it, the first letter of the spiritual alphabet. And from the first small letter has come the whole perfect and beautiful story. But years have been wasted, worse than wasted, because we absorbed the time and power of beautiful spirits who might have long been in happier pursuits. (Unnamed spirit communicator in LHH, 135.)

It seems as though all the most doleful phrases are specially reserved for the simple act of passing from your world to ours. Of course you do not need to remind me that from the point of view of parting from a loved one, it is no time for cheerfulness and ‘joy abounding.’ Yet were the truth known and realized, what a world of difference it would make, especially if that happy state of things were to exist to the end that all the mournful trapping so closely associated with transition were to be ruthlessly cast out. Is not the event, at the present day, sufficiently harrowing in itself without adding to its gloom by the adoption of so much black? (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 14-5.)

You can understand that we are not pleased with the willful stupidity of some earth folk who persist in closing their eyes and ears to the truth and so causing an enormous amount of misery to friends and relatives who has passed into the spirit world before them. Their blind ignorance in refusing to look at the facts of spiritual truths, their blatant assumption of mental superiority over the whole subject of spirit life, their self-satisfied attachment to their own erroneous views, all these taken together or individually have the effect of giving us work to do in the spirit world which a knowledge of the truth would render totally unnecessary. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 33.)

The Benefits of Overcoming the Fear of Death

This is a materialistic age. A large percentage of men and women have no real interest in the life beyond the grave. But they will all have to come out here sooner or later, and perhaps a few will find the change easier, the journey less formidable, by reason of what I shall have taught them. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXXII.)

[Knowing the truth about death] would drive out that dreadful fear of the unknown ‘hereafter’ which can be, and is, such a crushing nightmare to sensitive minds. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 30.)

I was never afraid of death. (Sigwart, BOTR, 39.)

How easy your dying will be if you continue to strive spiritually as you did during these past months. Then all shall be simple. (Sigwart, BOTR, 82.)

Q. Why do we fear death?

A. You fear what you do not understand, whether this be death or even a change in your job or living situation. People always fear things which are unknown to them. Very few people have been given any background information about dying and how a soul will feel when he reaches the other side. You have so many horrible ideas about death that people will suppress rather than acknowledge the fact that they, too, must die. Many people are frightened to face death and it is this lack of knowledge which is the root of the fear; whereas if they truly understood death, they would see it as a reward each soul is entitled to and not a punishment.

Q. Is it normal to fear death? Can this fear be overcome?

It is normal in your society, for people have swept it under the rug and established negative connotations about death. If you grew up in a primitive environment where life and death are just part of a cycle, then it would be taken for granted, accepted, and no longer be frightening. Mankind must, and will, change common viewpoints regarding the death transition. One day you will all look forward to the opportunity of being able to leave and transcend the material plane. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 5.)

Q. Are there any who do not fear death?

A. Yes, those who know within themselves that life is eternal. People who have proven to themselves through many various means – whether this be out-of-body experiences which they have had or through deep meditation – learn that death does not exist as you had imagined it. Through seeing those whom they loved who have returned to them, they know that there is no horror, there is no dread in leaving the physical body, but rather a freedom and a happy, joyous release. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 5.)

Q. If a person overcomes the fear of death, how will this change his life?

A. It changes his life in his thoughts and in everything he is doing, for he is no longer limited by his own physical and emotional states. He then knows that there is unlimited knowledge available to him to tap and use, if he will but trust and hope. The mind will form all thoughts and bring their reality to him.

It is only through seeing and proving to yourself that you are master of your own destiny that you will truly know and understand that death cannot exist, except in the attitude of the ignorant people.

Q. How can we be positive that life goes on after death?

A. By reaching the Eternal Self or God-Self within you which can leave the body at will to explore the other realms, to see the truth and knowledge of all things. In your deepest meditations, you will be given glimpses of the higher levels and you will see the beauty there which cannot compare with what you have on the earth plane. It cannot be expressed verbally; it is something which must be felt and experienced. Only the soul who can go through these experiences consciously in his meditation will truly know there is no death, there is nothing to fear, for it is a release, a freedom, and a joy apart from all earthly woe. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 6.)

Be Prepared to Die at Any Moment

Q: Should we all be prepared for death at any moment and, if so, how do we prepare?

A: By living each day in God’s eyes, knowing that this could be the last one; leaving nothing unsaid, nothing undone, and living that day thoroughly with love so that there will be no regrets. If people would do this, then when they have a death of their loved one to face, they would not be so burdened with the guilts which all people feel.

We always think we could have said this, we could have done that, we might have been able to prevent this or that – if people can live in the awareness that God can bring, at any time, death (of the body) upon the soul, they will then know within their hearts that they manifested the strongest love and handled things just as they would if the soul were to leave (the earth plane) that day. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 44.)

Q: How should we prepare ourselves for our death or the death of a loved one? A: The way to prepare for this is to know within yourself, and to have proved to yourself through meditation, that you are not confined to this body to think, to feel, to have emotions, to love.

It is often through out-of-the-body experiences where you are consciously aware of this continuation of life, independent of your physical shell, that you will be able to prepare yourself inwardly for that cross over.

If mankind can know that there is nothing to fear except fear itself, then he will eliminate the biggest barrier to God-consciouness that exists on the earth plane. It is only through feeling this, not through intellectualizing, that man will truly believe. It is through the feeling, the experience itself, that you can truly convince yourself that there is no time, no space, no limitation, to one who is out of the body. Meditation will help you to know this and feel this, and the fear of death will be gone. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 49.)

Q: How can we best prepare to fully experience our physical death?

A: Only if you have prepared well through years of meditation, will you be allowed to “watch,” so to speak, the transition of the soul. If you are totally unprepared and could not understand this leaving of the body, you would not be allowed to see this. It would be frightening to one who had not experienced it in the dream or meditative state.

All those who have been meditating five to ten years are going to be able to leave the body at death consciously aware of what is happening so that there would be no fear at the time, for this is something they experience daily. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND. 56.)

"You are all seeking the same truths, that of spirit life and spirit occupation. We have tried to give you news from here, but you must know that words are inadequate. We can only say again, think spiritually, act spiritually, and trust us to help you on your way." 'You say, think spiritually. Can you tell us just what you mean by that?' "Mary believes, first of all, the recognition of the Great Wise Power, whom you on earth call God. Then think of the life on this side and of how best to prepare for it." "Dee says, you know when we were preparing for our European trip, we read books of description, we prepared our wardrobe, and our thoughts were turned to the prospect before us. Suppose you apply this preparation spiritually. There are many, many, books to read, not only those of earthly writers, but also those whose inspiration has come from here. Then we might find a parallel in the thought of the clothes as compared with spirit clothed in unselfish thought, and in the white robes of spiritual intuition, and spiritual help for others. (Spirit controls Mary and Dee to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 141-2.)

Choice Points

Q: Are there several times in our lives when death is a possibility or is there only one specific time of death for each of us?

A: No, this will vary. Many times the entity needs the close brush with death in order to re-route him into a more positive state. There are times when a soul has chosen a particularly difficult incarnation and will be given a choice, to fulfill this or to leave the earth plane at a certain period. There is definitely a choice at that time, and usually the soul, depending upon his attitude and that which he hopes to develop within himself, will choose to remain in the body in order to complete the lessons necessary for his growth.

Q: [Is] this … a conscious choice?

A: Not at all times. You will find there are times that a soul will be given a conscious choice. This is very rare, however. Usually souls who are at that point of death will see their loved ones and be told that they must go back. But they will be able to bring back that memory with them. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 45.)

Q: There are many cases on record of people who “died” – they actually see their bodies from outside and the come back into them. Why does this happen to those few?

A: This is given to them to bring about a drastic change in their thinking, in their way of life, and in order for them to conceive the over-all God plan. In many cases, people who have been given the substantiation of life in the hereafter will be so changed that they work thereafter to help people by a life of service and pure dedication, rather than a life which is wasted and useless. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 46.)

Q: How should we tell the children about death?

If children understand that death is nothing more than going to sleep at night and living in the dream world they are already familiar with, then they will no longer fear death. It is your attitude that determines how children feel about death. If you show fear or are uncomfortable discussing death, they will pick this up, and they will have the same fears.

A child would not be as sad if the adults around him though of death as a happy transition rather than as sorrow. And if children are taught to know within themselves that death is a beautiful release into a world of sunshine and love, they will be prepared to face this, and fears will not be predominant. Parents should train children to know that death is a happy experience, that the soul has gained all that it came back to gain. You can leave within children deep scars or help them to see beauty in the transition from one side to the other. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 49-50.

The Possibility of a Conscious Death

Now let us deal with the conscious passing over of someone who is familiar with the process of death. There are very few such people in the western world today, for they are mostly advanced souls who only returned to your earth to perform a specific task: to bring about an advance in thought, or encourage a particular philosophy. When the time comes for them to return to their proper realm, they do so, believe me, with the utmost relief and joy! They tidy up their earthly affairs, then unhurriedly ask the blessings of the Great One. Then they simply lift out of their bodies and come straight to the plane where they belong. Nothing could be simpler or more benign. (Mike Swain to his father, Jasper, in FMW, 51.)

Cultures that Rejoiced at Death

Q: Were there ever any cultures that were smart enough to rejoice at death?

A: Yes, there have been may in the past. However, the more ritualist and dogmatic people become, the more death is a painful experience. This is our inability to let go of those we love, not recognizing that they are in a much happier state of mind than they could ever be on the earth plane. Unfortunately, much of Christianity misinterprets death and does not see it as a return to the higher planes, the higher rate of vibration. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 51.

The Remaining Partner Dying Soon After the Departed One

Q: When a married partner dies and so often the partner will follow him or her soon after, is there a specific reason for this?

A: The reason for this is that when one partner dies, he takes with him the energy, the life force, the polarity that has been feeding the other mate. If the partner remaining has an active social life, however, he or she will not be as apt to leave the earth plane as quickly. But if they have grown old together and have stayed closely tied to one another without outside friendships or just very few friendships, one is taking away the energy that has kept the two alive to that point. And being denied that energy, then, the other person will often follow within a year after his mate’s death. Some much sooner than that, depending on how high their energy level is alone.

Even a healthy person who has shown no health problems in the past suffers for his emotional support, his companionship, the feeding of his own mental, physical and spiritual state. At that point his body would begin to disintegrate rapidly, due to not having the energy of the two. However, if one has been meditating for many years he will automatically connect with the love force within and sustain himself. …

If he is one who has been active, who has other friends, and other close attachments, then he can feed from those attachments. This is why in the eastern cultures, they the elderly people around the young family so that the older person is constantly being fed this energy. In your culture, you are more apt to let the person live alone or to put the elderly person in a convalescent hospital as he becomes disabled. Their energy diminishes very rapidly because there is not the love bond. Love is the life force.

Q: But if there is a specific time for people to die, wouldn’t they be pre-ordained to die anyway soon after, if that was their time?

A: No, as couples get older, as people get older, there is often perhaps a five or ten year span where they live on if their mental attitude is active and good. In other words, if the kundalini energy (the energy based in the spine) is stimulating the mind, the person can feel younger and can also stay alive in the physical vehicle. But if one is denied that energy and lives as a recluse, then he will become ill and this will then allow him to cross over sooner.

Q: Is there a karmic price to pay for doing this?

A: No, not in this case.

Q: Is it advisable, though, to try to remain in the body as long as you can after your loved one has gone?<>P A: If you can, there is always growth that can be made. Many times losing a love donemakes the person remaining stand on his or her own two feet for the very first time in life. This is when it would pay to understand the lessons that can be gained from this and to pull in one’s own strengths to begin life anew.

Also, to resolve the dependency which you have had throughout your lifespan. There is much that you can gain which will help you in a future reincarnation by understanding that the loved one was taken from you for your best interest. The one who needs to learn that the most will usually be the one who is left behind. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards, TIND, 51-3.

Spirit’s Views of Earth

Don’t Despise the Physical

Earth is, so to speak, the sediment in our glass of astral beer! (Philip Gilbert, PTS, 68.)

Do not fall into the error, so common to the aspirer and the mystic, of despising the physical, for that also is part of the great theme of Creation and, could it be purged of its grosser evils, would be paradise! (The “Unknown Teacher” in PTW, 194.)

Just as you have an aura, an etheric body seen only by clairvoyants, so the whole world has an etheric form, which is in fact more ‘real’ than the visible one, but it can be moulded by thought whereas with you thought has to take material form in order to produce an object. (Philip Gilbert in PTW, 231.)

It is strange how one’s vision changes when you come to this side. When on earth you think everything here is vague and shadowy, but, as we look down on your world, you seem to be living deaf, blind, dumb, and in the dark, and we have the substance of things; you only the symbols. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 26.)

You may look like everyone else in a physical vehicle, but each person is manifesting at a different rate of vibration depending on his evolution.

This is why some people are more spiritually advanced and others more material. People of similar evolution tend to mingle here on the earth plane. (Unnamed spirit teacher through Betty Bethards in TIND, 17-8.)

As long as one lives on earth, however, one must be concerned with the physical body. Great Masters have loved and fostered their bodies as worthy vehicles for the higher spirit. Therefore it is the duty of man to care for his physical body for, if it is ill, ugly and frail, the spirit feels unhappy in it and the span of life he has to complete becomes too long for him and a torment. In order to feel well and comfortable the spirit must nurture its body accordingly.

But to wallow in sensual indulgence for the sake of enjoying the body is wrong. Take care of yourself in such a way that the spirit is satisfied with its garment. (Sigwart, BOTR, 62.)

“We Were All Mistaken on Earth”

We were all mistaken on earth, ministers and laymen alike. Lawyers are not just; merchants not honest; business men forgetting their honor while grasping greater gains; ministers allowing creeds to outweigh service. Why do clergymen emphasize creed instead of service? Why do they mourn over death, instead of telling of the wonderful opportunities beyond? Why do judges punish crime instead of educating the criminal? Why does the world spend its care and thought on the fleeting shadows of earth life, rather than study the conditions of the heavenly one which is to last forever? (Unnamed spiritual communicator to Charlotte Dresser, SWSL, 11.)

You lead two lives at the same time and a man may make a name and a reputation in both worlds at once, or in one only for it often happens – indeed, it is most commonly the case – that men whom we think the most of are least thought of by you. Many a poor man is a power in the spirit world and will have a name awaiting him, when he enters spirit life, which kings might envy. (Unnamed spirit communicator in SRE, 58.)

Spirit’s Awareness of Earth

We are fully aware of what is occurring upon the earth-plane at all times. I do not, for one minute, say that we all of us know what is taking place with you. Those of us who are in active communion with you are conversant with you personal affairs and with the affairs of your world in general. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 184.)

It is all very hard to grasp, but you people seem as if you are on a cinema screen, only I can walk in among you and sit down on chairs. (Philip Gilbert in PTW, 93.)

Your world is like the negative of a photograph to me now, unfleshed, showing outlines and definitions, but of a transparent nature. I have to “read in” the perspective that appear so realistically and colorfully to you for my senses are not tuned in to those neurological keys that cause the world to spring alive.

Now and then, memory and imagination cause a sudden connection and I perceive a particular scene, knowing however that it in ways a replica of a given space-time picture but not the picture itself and I cannot enter into it. …. Perception of your world is possible, but in a dim overview fashion for now that reality is the ghostly one to me, its edges unclear, its motions blurry and its most solid masses having a transparent cast.

I view it as you might an unclear movie in which time sequences jumble, the speed is uncertain, there are bleedthroughs from one picture to another, and the sound is dubbed in, sometimes before or sometimes after the actors speak.

I am more aware of general developments since my time than of specifics. (William James, ADJ, 118.)

I can follow thought’s masses as they form above the world, mixing with others, flowing in patterns sometimes light, sometimes dark or dimming, and I can perceive the intensity of emotion that drives them. As a rain cloud will surely bring a shower, from my standpoint it is obvious that certain thought patterns will bring about physical events suiting their nature, so it is with considerable interest that I watch those emotional and mental patterns that surround the world. …

I … perceive the dawn of new ideas, the glow of peace or faith or contentment as these surround the earth, “rising” amidst the darker forms of doubt and fear. (William James, ADJ, 119.)

I feel your thoughts as waves emanating from you. The most sublime thoughts are the brightest and gentlest sounding ones. Indifferent thoughts cause opaque and insignificant waves. Except for the reall evil ones that you do not have, thoughts of unrest are the worst, and I perceive them as a stormy sea that battles and surfs against itself. Such thoughts spread the unrest further into the spiritual spheres. Whenever the bright-sounding waves flow toward me I am drawn to them at once. Bad thoughts create a spiritual force that accompanies man as a separate being. (Sigwart, BOTR, 52.)

What the infant with its fine avenues of sensation, … with its purely rudimentary animal consciousness is to the full-grown man, to Plato, to Shakespeare, to Newton, [is what] that the full-grown man [is] in the highest stage of his development on earth is to the man as he is capable of becoming when he leaves his body and becomes a denizen of the other world. All that you know and feel and understand is but as the beginning, a germ, a prophecy of things to be, the basis and foundation for that which is to come. (Julia Ames, AD, 152.)

There are many windows (1) to this house, and every one is used. But there are three which serve to evidence the rest.

There is the method of continuous posting, wherein those workers nearest you hand on messages and reports to those in the sphere above, and they continue the operation until the message comes to its destination where it is to be appropriately dealt with. This is done swiftly—and yet in the flight of any message through the spheres it is sifted in each and that extracted which is proper to the workers of that particular sphere to undertake its answer.

Also, messages from workers and prayers from the earth are filtered and made suitable for transmission into higher realms. Were this not done their earth-grossness would weigh them down so heavily that what was in them of sublimity would not be competent to rise and come to the sphere where it is appropriate it should find destination. I will not pursue this further—'tis a bare outline I give, but I must go on to the next method. This we may call the direct method.

There are those of you who have guides in the spheres for special work and guidance. Some of these guides are very high and bright angels, and their proper home is far above those spheres bordering on the earth. They may not ever be coming down to those of their / charges, for, high as they be, they are not all powerful, and to descend to earth is expensive of energy, by reason of the necessity of conditioning themselves to the spheres through which they pass, and in each sphere there is a new condition for them to achieve until they come to earth.

This is done from time to time, and, indeed, not seldom, when such work is afoot as to warrant such undertaking. But we are ever careful of waste, who have so much to do for others' help, and do not spend lavishly, even of that which is infinite in its supply.

We can do our work better, as a rule, by the method of direct communion. In order to establish this we devise a kind of telephone or telegraph—to use your own speech—a cord of vibrations and pulsations between us and you, and it is constructed of the blended vitality of the guide and the guided. I use here words I like not overmuch, but I cannot find other in your brain to use, so they must stand. I refer to such words as “construct," "vitality," and such as these. Sympathetic intercourse is by this means rendered continuous and sustained.

It is like the system of nerves between the body and the brain: it is always potentially operative, whenever need arises of help to be given. Whenever the charge turns to his far-away guide in thought or longing, that guide himself is at once aware and gives answer in the way he judges best.

There is a third method, but more complicated than either of these I have summarized. It may, / perhaps, be given such a name as the universal, which is bad enough, but must serve. In the first process the stream of thought passing from earth to spheres more or less remote is handled and modified in each sphere as it travels on its way, like a continuous post across continents—only there is no change of horses nor pause on the way. In the next, the line is ever open and ever charged, like a telephone with electricity, and is direct in a line from the man on earth to the guide in his own proper sphere.

In the third, the process is distinct from either of these. It is that by which every thought and action of man is reported in the heavens, and may, by those competent to do so, be read from time to time. These records are real and permanent, but the aspect of them and their method of construction it is not possible for us to explain. Words have been very strained to serve in the first two descriptions. Here they fail in total. I will say but this, that every thought of every man has a universal application and effect. Call it ether, or what you will, the fluid which fills these spheres is of so sensitive and so compact and continuous a substance that if you touch it with a sigh at one end of the universe the effect is registered at the other end.

Here, again, "end" is not a proper word to use, for in the sense you use it there is no significance here. But that of which I now try so lamely to come at, so that I may show somewhat of its wonder to you, is that which the Saviour Christ had in mind when, wiser than I, He did not name it with any name, / but spoke of it only as it is found to be in operation thus: "Not a hair of your head is hurt, not a fledgling falls from its nest, but the Father of All is notified." (Arnel in G. Vale Owen, LBV3, 85-8.)

(1) Perhaps “doors” may be a better term, as in ways in and to.

Mortal Life is Dull Compared to Spirit Life

What strange experiences one has out here! I rather dread to go back into the world, where it will be so dull for me for a long time. Can I exchange this freedom and vivid life for a long period of somnolence, afterwards to suck a bottle and learn the multiplication table and Greek and Latin verbs? I suppose I must—but not yet. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXX.)

Spirit Influence and Mediumship

Spirit Influence

The power of the so-called dead to influence the living is immense, provided that the tie of sympathy has been made. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXVII.)

All inspiration flows direct from Him Whom you call God; that is to say, from the Great, All-Pervading Spirit, Who is in and through and amongst all. (Spirit leader Imperator in MSTSW, n.p.)

No one ever gets near to God; He sends spirits to act between Him and you. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

You are surrounded by spirit life, and are never alone, never. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Spirit influence has more to do with our lives than we imagine. We are judged of by the spirits surrounding us. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.) (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

A great power lies within every human being, but how few recognize it. I myself comprehend only now how much more I could have done on earth. How differently would I have developed had I but listened more to my inner self! I absorbed as much as I could from the outer world and sucked it up like a bee, but too seldom did I draw from my inner being. Much has escaped me by this negligence. (Sigwart, BOTR, 6-7.)

inspiration is beamed back to receptive minds in all branches of progress. Scientific discoveries on earth are but a dim reflection of known and perfected plans which are in operation here. (Ethel McLean in LFM, 43.)

The Objective of Spirit’s Attempts to Influence

The Great Spirit is within you. You have a divine heritage and are entitled to all the bounty of the Great Spirit because of your latent divinity and all obstacles and institutions that stand in the way of that fullness must be swept aside. … That is the task to which we have dedicated ourselves. That is the service we strive to perform. (Silver Birch, TSB, 45.)

Great work can be achieved if all those who are conscious of spiritual truths will band themselves together and use their power to dissipate the fog of darkness which has risen in the world of matter. Go forward with great confidence, knowing that all the forces of goodness, helpfulness and service are at your side. (Silver Birch, TSB, 46.)

We will be able to help many who do not know where to turn, who have left behind them the old shibboleths, who do not trust any more the faith of yesterday and who search for the truth which will withstand the questionings of today. We bring them the knowledge of spiritual truth and spiritual law. We seek to remind them of their own innate powers of divinity, to make them understand the Godhead that is theirs so that they may sweep away for ever the ideas of cringing self-abasement before a vengeful, wrathful deity. (Silver Birch, TSB, 46.)

We seek to make your world of matter realize the great power of spirit, waiting to co-operate with all those who strive to serve the children of the Great Spirit so that, armed with knowledge, they can fight all superstition and all that belongs to the mists of darkness, and allow the light of spiritual truth to radiate its glorious beams. That is our task. And we bring with us the power of the spirit which can inspire and guide, which can uphold and sustain, which can bring food to hungry minds, healing to bodies racked with pain, which can bring inspiration and revelation, truth and wisdom for all.

We can fill them with this power just as they provide us with the capacity to understand and receive it. We seek to co-operate with all who desire to uplift mankind, whether they be inside the Churches or outside, whether they have the labels of religion or none at all, whether they be scientists, materialists, [or] philosophers. (Silver Birch, TSB, 46-7.)

Case Study: An Angel Inspires a Mortal

"The earth is one of my (1) playgrounds. I sing to the children of earth sometimes; and when I sing to the poets, they believe that their muse is with them. Here is a song which I sang one night to a soul which dwells among men:

”My sister, I am often with you when you realize it not.      For me a poet soul is a well of water in whose deeps I             can see myself reflected.
I live in a glamour of light and colour, which you mortal             poets vainly try to express in magic words.
I am in the sunset and in the star; I watched the moon             grow old and you grow young.
In childhood you sought for me in the swiftly moving             cloud; in maturity you fancied you had caught me             in the gleam of a lover’s eye; but I am the eluder             of men.
I beckon and I fly, and the touch of my feet does not             press down the heads of the blossoming daisies.
You can find me and lose me again, for mortal cannot             hold me.
I am nearest to those who seek beauty—whether in             thought or in form; I fly from those who seek to             imprison me.
You can come each day to the region where I dwell.
Sometimes you will meet me, sometimes not; for my will             is the wind’s will, and I answer no beckoning finger:      But when I beckon, the souls come flying from the four             corners of heaven.
Your soul comes flying, too; for you are one of those I             have called by the spell of my magic.
I have use for you, and you have meaning for me; I like             to see your soul in its hours of dream and ecstasy.
Whenever one of my own dreams a dream of Paradise,             the light grows brighter for me, to whom all things             are bright.
Oh, forget not the charm of the moment, forget not the             lure of the mood!
For the mood is wiser than all the magi of earth, and             the treasures of the moment are richer and rarer             than the hoarded wealth of the ages.
The moment is real, while the age is only a delusion, a             memory, and a shadow.
Be sure that each moment is all, and the moment is more             than time.
     Time carries an hour-glass, and his step is slow; his hair             is white with the rime of years, and his scythe is             dull with unwearied mowing;
But he never yet has caught the moment in its flight.             He has grown old in casting nets for it.
Ah, the magic of life and of the endless combination of             living things!
I was young when the sun was formed, and I shall be             young when the moon falls dead in the arms of her             daughter the earth.
Will you not be young with me? The dust is as nothing:              the soul is all.
     Like a crescent moon on the surface of a lake of water             is the moment of loves awakening;
Like a faded flower in the lap of the tired world is the             moment of love’s death.
But there is love and Love, and the love of the light for             its radiance is the love of souls for each other.
There is no death where the inner light shines, irradiating              the fields of the within—the beyond—the unattainable attainment.
You know where to find me.” (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXXVIII.)

(1) Judge Hatch is talking to an Angel whom he knows as the “Beautiful Being.”

The Type of Person Most Like Spirit in Perception

The poet in an ecstacy of creation, the artist who glimpses divine form and colour, the musician who puts together sounds, almost beyond reach of mortal senses, are probably three types of earth-mortal who approach nearer to this responsive normal state of ours. (Ethel McLean in LFM, 76

I think the nearest approach to our normal response is the spontaneous feeling of wonder, joy and almost worship which can be felt on earth when something utterly innocent and beautiful is seen and grasped by the emotions. This is the poet’s vision, the artist’s, and perhaps the mystic’s too. In such a case, perception is not processed by the mind which is a cold and logical instrument, but impinges directly upon the feelings. Our approach to our world, then, can no longer be cold and impersonal. (T.E. Lawrence, PMJ, 125-6.)

The Type of Person Whom Spirit Can and Cannot Influence

There is nothing so utterly fatal to spirit influence as self-seeking, self-pleasing, boastfulness, arrogance, or pride. The intelligence must be subordinated, or we cannot work upon it. If it be dogmatic, we cannot use it. If it be arrogant and selfish, we cannot come near it. Self-abnegation has been the virtue which has graced the wise and holy men of all time. The seers who bore of old the flag on which was inscribed for their generation the message of progressive truth were men who thought little of themselves and much of their work. They who spoke to the Jews, whose messages you have in your sacred records, were men of self-denying purity and singleness of life. (Spirit control named Doctor in Moses, ST, 40.)

They who since have purged the world from error, and have shed on it the beams of truth, have been one and all men of self-denial and earnest devotion to a work which they knew to be that for which they were set apart. Socrates and Plato, John and Paul, the pioneers of truth, the heralds of progress, all have been unselfish souls -souls who knew naught of self-seeking, of proud aggrandisement, of boastful arrogance. To them earnestness and singleness of purpose, devotion to their appointed work, forgetfulness of self and its interests, were given in a high degree. Without that they could not have effected what they did. Selfishness would have eaten out the heart of their success. Humility, sincerity, and earnestness bore them on. This is the character we seek.

Loving and earnest, self-denying and receptive to truth; with single eye to God’s work, and with forgetfulness of earthly aims. Rare it is, rare as it is beautiful. Seek, friend, the mind of the philosopher, calm, reliant, truthful, and earnest! Seek the spirit of the philanthropist, loving, tolerant, ready to help, quick to give the needed aid. Add the self-abnegation of the servant of God who does his work and seeks no reward. For such a character work, high, holy, noble, is possible. Such we guard and watch with jealous care. On such the angels of the Father smile, and tend and protect them from injury. (Spirit control named Doctor in Moses, ST, 40-1.)

Stainton Moses: Yes, surely. But very few such are to be found.

Few, few: and none save in the germ. There is the capability on which we work with thankfulness. We seek not for perfection: we do but desire sincerity and earnest desire for improvement: a mind free and receptive; a spirit pure and good. Wait in patience. Impatience is a dire fault. Avoid over-carefulness and anxiety as to causes which are beyond your control. Leave that to us. In patience and seclusion ponder what we say. (Spirit control named Doctor in Moses, ST, 41.)

The busy world is ever averse from the things of spirit life. Men become absorbed in the material, that which they can see, and grasp, and hoard up, and they forget that there is a future and spirit life. They become so earthly that they are impervious to our influence; so material that we cannot come near them; so full of earthly interests that there is no room for that which shall endure when they have passed away. More than this, the constant preoccupation leaves no time for contemplation, and the spirit is wasted for lack of sustenance. The spiritual state is weak: the body is worn and weary with weight of work and anxious care, and the spirit is well-nigh inaccessible. The whole air, moreover, is heavy with conflicting passions, with heart-burnings, and jealousies, and contentions, and all that is inimical to us.

Round the busy city, with its myriad haunts and vice, its detestable allurements, its votaries of folly and sin, hover the legions of the opposing spirits, who watch for opportunity to lure the wavering to their ruin. They urge on many to their grief hereafter, and cause us many sorrows and much anxious care.

The life of contemplation is that which most suits communion with us. It is not indeed to supersede the life of action, but may be in some sort combined with it. It is most readily practised where distracting cares come not in, and where excessive toil weakens not the bodily powers. But the desire must be inherent in the soul; and where that is, neither distracting cares nor worldly allurements avail to prevent the recognition of a spirit world, and of communion with it. The heart must be prepared. But it is easier for us to make our presence felt when the surroundings are pure and-peaceful. (Spirit communicator “Prudens” in Moses, ST, 41-2.)

To few only in your land have higher revealings of spiritual truth been vouchsafed. Even this means of communing by writing, which seems to you such an advance on the clumsy rapping out messages and such material means of communication, is as nothing, compared with the inner communing of spirit with spirit without the intervention of material signs.

In America, the land from which dates this movement in your days, there are many who have been so far developed as to lead a dual life, and to hold face to face intercourse with us. We have even now a band of workers there who are achieving results which we cannot command here through faithlessness of mind, materiality of interests, and even grossness of atmospheric surroundings.

It is not with our work as with your mundane affairs. We read the heart, and it is useless to feign interest which you do not feel—that you would not do—or to proceed on our way while faith is lacking. It has been so in all ages of the world. Efforts have been made from time to time to pour advanced knowledge; it has been found that the time was not come, and the effort has been withdrawn. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 163.)

Spirits need not to see you to influence you. You imagine sight connected with the eyes. We are cognisant of your presence without seeing you. The influence of spirit on spirit is magnetic. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Inspiration Flows from the Spirit World to Earth

Any time a genius develops new ideas or physical forms, be they artistic creations or new machines, to a degree he is expressing the influence of the Overmind. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 81.)

Nearly all forms of beautiful thought which are expressed, either in the writing of prose or poetry, or in painting, sculpture, or music, have been inspired by some spirit-artist, or musician, in waves of thought to a receptive mind on the earth plane. Probably many so inspired have no idea that the thoughts are not entirely their known and would resent a suggestion of invisible help. But they are helped, nevertheless, by those on this side and sometimes one will admit that the words came he knew not how. And thus are produced the masterpieces of a man’s life. (John Heslop, SABL, 20.)

It is the divine essence of knowledge and beauty, filtering down to the inhabitants of earth in such measures as they are capable of receiving it. When the inspiration comes, it depends entirely on the mentality of the one who receives it what form it will take. It may express itself in music, painting, or verse, but in all cases the inspiration comes through silent waves of thought, flowing over the soul of man. The more receptive and spiritually-developed the nature, the finer the result of the inspiring spirit. (John Heslop, SABL, 20-1.)

I have read much fine verse that has not yet come down to you. (John Heslop, SABL, 76.)

Schubert, I understand, has been doing a very good lately with a lady in England named Rosemary Brown [the author of Unfinished Symphonies and Immortals by My Side]. Those melodies were burning bin his head when he died and he never got a chance to write them down. He’s very pleased to have this opportunity. (Arthur Ford, PP, 99.)

The artist Rembrandt was shown a vision of the actual appearance of Christ. He made every effort to find a model that came close to that – and then was able to transcend even the model. His paintings are perhaps the closes to the actual appearance of Christ’s face that have ever been put on canvas. I would rather refer you to them than try to give you a verbal description, because Rembrandt’s paintings are worth looking up and studying. (Edgar Cayce’s spirit control Michael to Robert Leichtman in PP, 56.)

All the major discoveries that are of service to the earth-plane have come and always will come from the spirit world. If man, employing his free will, chooses to put those discoveries to base ends, then he can thank himself for the calamities that follow. Inspiration devoted to whatever cause or pursuit comes from the world of spirit and from nowhere else. If it be for the good of mankind, the source of equally good; if the inspiration is obviously not for the good of mankind, then the source is unquestionably evil. Man has it within his own hands as to which source of inspiration he will lend himself – to good or to evil. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 186.)

The inspiration that came to man to cover himself and his family with a roof of however rude a description came from the spirit world. You may say: nothing of the sort; it is no more than a natural instinct of self-preservation, to protect one’s self from the rigours of wind and storm, of cold and heat. If you feel that you must adhere to your contention, then so be it. I cannot provide proof of my assertion yet. You must wait until you come to spirit lands yourself and I shall be pleased to show you where you can ascertain the truth for yourself. In the meantime, I will adhere to my contention and I will venture further to assert that the whole range of architectural design throughout the ages has been inspired and influenced, promoted and encouraged by great minds resident in the spirit world. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 85.)

Inspiration is not a matter of physical brain cells self-functioning in such a manner as to produce a clever or brilliant idea in the mind of a person. Inspiration can come from any quarter of the spirit world, from the highest realms, from the lowest realms, and from the grey lands as well. It remains with the incarnate as to which quarter of the spirit world he will lend an ear. If to the highest, there will come only that which is good; if to the lowest, only that which is evil and bad. In the former, among many other good things, you will have all the beauties of art and music, but they will be beauties and not hideous distortions masquerading under the cloak of pure art; you will have scientific discoveries for the benefit of mankind, as well as schemes for his well-being. You will have great works of dramatic and literary genius that will live through the years and never show signs of wear. From the dark realms you will have wars and strife, unrest and discontent; you will have literature that is a disgrace to so-called civilization, and music, even, that is an abomination of impure sounds, such sounds as would never exist for an instant of time in these realms. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 85-6.)

The spirit world is not a copy of the earth. The spirit world was in being aeons of time before the earth came into existence. Does man think that he has formed and fashioned all that is man-made upon earth entirely of his own man genius? Then man is woefully mistaken.

Without the spirit world, the earth and mankind, who is barely living as judged by the greater life of the spirit world, would soon get into inconceivable difficulties. The beauties of the earth are but a foretaste of the beauties of the spirit world and the life that lies before all mankind. We do not copy you who are on earth – we have no need to do so. We give you glimpses of the spirit world so that you may have some slight acquaintance with the spirit world before you come to take up your residence here. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 86.)

It is … wrong to discount inspiration from our world. We over here do interfere, as you know, or inspire, though not so much as the more sentimental Spiritualists would like to believe. (Philip Gilbert in PTS, 38.)

I tried to analyze the mind processes when on earth, and found that when I could attain the most absolute silence of the brain, the most absolute passivity, I received a gleam of thought from here. I did not recognize the source then, but called it the action of the subconscious intelligence. But now I know that into that silence of the brain, thoughts and words were impressed from here.

Cultivate, then, this habit of silence. Spend some portion of each day in as perfect passivity as you can attain; and wait for the inner vision, the heavenly direction, which will surely follow, if you educate your mind to receive, instead of giving out its own thought. (A former teacher of psychology to Charlotte Dresser, SWSL, 13.)

Robert G. Ingersoll, well known to me in the after life, speaking on this subject said:

"Let me give the most remarkable illustration of spirit suggestion—the immortal Shakespeare. Neither of his parents could read or write. He grew up in a small village among ignorant people, on the banks of the Avon. There was nothing in the peaceful, quiet landscape on which he looked, /nothing in the low hills, the undulating fields, nothing in the lazy flowing stream to excite the imagination. Nothing in his early life calculated to sow the seeds of the subtlest and sublimest thought. There was nothing in his education or lack of education to account for what he did. It is supposed that he attended school in his home village, but of that there is no proof. He went to London when young, and within a few years became interested in Black Friars Theatre, where he was actor, dramatist, and manager. He was never engaged in a business counted reputable in that day. Socially he occupied a position below servants. The law described him as a "sturdy vagabond." He died at 52. How such a man could produce the works which he did has been the wonder of all time. Not satisfied that one with such limited advantages could possibly have written the master pieces of literature, it has been by some contended that Bacon was the author of all Shakespeare's comedies and tragedies.

It is a fact to be noted that in none of this man's plays is there any mention of his contemporaries. He made reference to no king, queen, poet, author, sailor, soldier, statesman, or priest of his own period. He lived in an age of great / deeds, in the time of religious wars, in the days of the armada, the edict of Nantes, the massacres of St. Bartholomew, the victory of Lepanto, the assassination of Henry III of France, and the execution of Mary Stuart; yet he did not mention a single incident of his day and time.

The brain that conceived "Timon of Athens" was a Greek in the days of Pericles and familiar with the tragedies of that country. The mind that dictated "Julius Caesar" was an inhabitant of the Eternal City when Caesar led his legions in the field. The author of "Lear" was a Pagan; of "Romeo and Juliet," an Italian who knew the ecstasies of love. The author of those plays must have been a physician, for he shows a knowledge of medicine and the symptoms of disease; a musician, for in "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" he uses every musical term known to his contemporaries. He was a lawyer, for he was acquainted with the forms and expressions used by that profession. He was a botanist because he named nearly all known plants. He was an astronomer and a naturalist and wrote intelligently upon the stars and natural science. He was a sailor, or he could not have written "The Tempest." He was a savage and trod the forest's silent depths. He knew all crimes, all regrets, all virtues, and / their rewards. He knew the unspoken thoughts, desires and ways of beasts. He lived all lives. His brain was a sea on which the waves touch all the shores of experience. He was the wonder of his time and of ours.

Was it possible for any man of his education and experience to conceive the things which he did? All the Shakespearean works were, beyond a doubt, the product of his pen, but the conceptions, the plays, the tragedies were the work of many brains, given Shakespeare by spirit suggestion. He was but the sensitive instrument through which a group of learned and distinguished scholars, inhabitants of many lands when in earth-life, gave to posterity the sublime masterpieces of the Bard of Avon." (Robert G. Ingersoll in Edward C. Randall, DHND, 207-10.)

You must understand that the rapid changes taking place are most likely to outstrip man’s ability to cope with the new situations that will arise, unless he receives the guidance and co-operation from our side of life. That is why it is so important that our world, into which all generations must pass on leaving earth, should be accepted as real as the plane of earthly experience and as a close and useful part of the world we have all live din. In other words, we, who are now living in that other state of existence, are still partners and can share in the trials and tribulations of those on earth in order to assist. We are fellow-travellers and citizens of eternity. (Gordon Burdick to Grace Rosher in TR, 54.)

All knowledge is from us. With us is the substance, with you the shadow only. (“Prudens” [Plotinus, as indicated in MST, 72] in ST, 148.)

Man cannot receive more than he is prepared for. He is gradually led by spirit-guidance to a higher plane of knowledge, and then, when the need is felt, advanced and progressive information is given to him. Those of you who have questioned whether man does not evolve for himself a theoretic or speculative system which comes entirely from within, are not informed as to the operations of the Divine messengers.

At the very outset of our information to you we explained that man was only the vehicle of spirit-guidance. What he wrongly imagines to be the evolution of his own mind is in reality the outcome of spirit-teaching which acts through him. Some of your greater minds have wandered near the truth when they have so speculated. Did they but know enough of spirit-teaching to be aware of the influence that acts upon them, they would be far nearer the truth than those who have fancied that their Bible contains a complete and infallible Revelation, to which nothing will ever be added, and from which no scrap may ever be removed as useless. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 137.)

Spirit-preparation precedes your knowledge, and enables the progressive mind to evolve for itself higher views of truth, those very views being not the less the very voice of the messenger of truth. And so revelation is correlative with man’s needs. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 137.)

Even when you imagine your own mind to be most assuredly acting you err, for there is no such thing with you as independent action. You have always been guided and influenced by us. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 137.)

The voice of the higher spirits communing with the soul is silent, noiseless and frequently unobserved; felt only in results, but unknown in its processes. (Spirit leader Imperator in MSTSW, n.p.)

From this vast realm of spirit the spirit-body is nurtured and sustained. It drinks in its nourishment from it, as the physical body is nurtured by the air it breathes. This ether is to the spirit-body what the air is to the physical. And from this pervading realm of spirit all human store of wisdom is derived; principally through the aid of ministering spirits. They drink it in best who are most receptive, most spiritual. They who are called geniuses by men are such; they who make useful discoveries, who invent that which is of service to mankind. These all derive their inspiration from the world of spirit. The invention has existed there before man has discovered it. The flashes of genius are but reflected gleams from the world where ideas germinate. (Spirit leader Imperator in MSTSW, n.p.)

This philosophy will go on being taught in the world and all over the world. Only a few perhaps, will reach the deeps of it in this life; but a seed sown to-day may bear fruit long hence. Somewhere I have read that grains of wheat which had been buried with mummies for two or three thousand years had sprouted when placed in good soil in our own day. It is so with a philosophic seed. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter X.)

Rays of Light Illuminate the Darkness

Rays of light … are always passing from our world to yours to illuminate the spiritual darkness. They are used to penetrate the mass of evil in which some souls are encased, and to such they are as a consuming fire of conviction and remorse. (John Heslop, FMABL, 31.)

Rays of light help us on our journeys to the land of darkness, for without them it would be impossible to penetrate the intense blackness of these regions. It is truly a darkness that may be felt, but the light falls on us and on those to when we are sent, and enables us to see them. Gradually as they become accustomed to the light they also see us and, when they recognize a loved one from the other sphere who has come to help them to rise, it encourages them to try to do so. Then by a combined effort we are able to bear them away from the darkness to a better sphere.

I think you can understand what these Divine rays do spiritually when you compare them to the action of the sun, as it gradually dispels the thick mists of your London atmosphere till everything is bathed in cheerful sunlight. (John Heslop, FMABL, 31-2.)

Psychic Gifts

All gifts have to be asked for; we, too, pray for them. Through supplication only shall our wishes be granted. You still believe everything happens by itself. Nothing comes of itself, not with you, nor with us. (Sigwart, BOTR, 59.)

More and more people on your side should be encouraged to develop clairvoyance, clairaudience, and any other means available to break down the barrier. (Ethel McLean in LFM, 48.)

Genius

You say you have heard so much of "Spirit-guides" to people on earth, and want to know who appoints these, and why? "Guardian Angels" I suppose they used to be called. Well, no one appoints them; they are spirit-friends attracted by something in the individual which appeals to them, and they try to influence and help those in whom they take an interest.

They may be earth-friends or relatives who having passed on still keep the bond of affection that held them while here, though they are often strangers attracted by mutual interests, who try literally to inspire those on earth. This does not mean in religious matters only; it applies to art, science, engineering, medicine, or any other subject.

Can't you imagine a musician here, revelling in beautiful harmonies, trying to instil into the mind of an earthly musician some of the glorious sound which gives him such joy, and which he knows will benefit and uplift those still in the "bonds of the flesh"? or an artist surrounded by this exquisite beauty trying to inspire the mind of a friend, so that he may / see with truer, clearer vision the hidden wonders that surround him? or a man of science or an engineer trying to impress the mind of a friend on earth with a new discovery or invention?

These things are being done every day, and the "flashes of genius" which illumine the world occasionally are the result of the influence of spirit-minds on the minds of those still in the world. When men realize it is possible to get help from these sources they will do great things, for to those who have passed on, the sources of information, though not limitless, are vast in comparison with those on earth. The secrets of Atlantis and ancient Egypt are obtainable if they care to work to learn them. (Claude Kelway-Bamber in CB, 38-9.)

For all their faults, and they were manifold, nonetheless, the Atlanteans respected intelligence. They respected genius in any line of achievement, be it government, religion, philosophy, art or science. And the Atlanteans took care of their geniuses. They were an extremely proud race in many ways. They respected people with genius, protected their development, and listened to them. They didn’t take popularity polls to see what a good idea was – they listened to their geniuses.

As a result, the best and the brightest of the Atlantean geniuses had a much better chance than today to make a contribution and then build on it. They had a better chance to enrich the work of each other.

The Atlanteans also respected the process of inspiration. That often made it easier for helpful entities and spirits to poke ideas into the receptive and interested minds of physical scientists and thinkers. Mediumship among scientists was not unknown.

Can you conceive in this day and age of a college professor being a medium and using his mediumship openly in the conduct of his scientific studies? That could happen in Atlantis. But today mediums are often thought to be floozy, badly-educated women who bring through trivial comments about what vitamins to take, what dress to wear to a party, or where to take your vacation. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 61-2.)

Yes, I was able to work that quickly because I was a genius. That’s important, you know. Men and women should learn to appreciate and honor more of their good side and really strive to excel. They should strive to develop a well-functioning mind and then use it in disciplined work. I am very proud of the fact that I was a genius and manifested that genius in many ways. I would hope that others might study what record there is of my life, not so much to learn the secrets of my inventions – but to learn my manner of thinking and my approach to the scientific method. I’m not saying that people should try to imitate me, because the imitation of genius is not genius itself. But if I could think fifth dimensionally, others can, too. The mental processes of my genius can be duplicated. (Nikola Tesla in NTR, 35.)

Yet if anyone would look at the record of my physical life, they would see that the meaning of it far transcended the inventions and discoveries I was responsible for. I demonstrated a profound principle. I demonstrated what any ordinary genius with a brilliant mind can do.

Now, I know that sounds very unhumble and being unhumble is not very popular these days. But I think it’s worthwhile to make that statement. The readers who understand genius and the brilliance of the human mind will not be offended – or even think it unhumble. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 48-50.)

All talents and abilities require enormous preparation. Watching a Horowitz or a Heifitz perform, you may think it looks effortless, but you know very well it is not. Even a musical artist who is born with great talent must spend hours and hours every day in arduous practice to harness his natural talent. Manifesting genius requires enormous work, practice, and discipline.

During my physical life, I went through various austerities which forced me to put more of my attention on the development of the mind and personal discipline. I also took it as a challenge when various stupid people repeatedly told me that something “just can’t be done” or “no one understands this.” That was like putting a spear in my side. So I ground away – thinking, speculating, planning, and experimenting – and over a period of years, I developed an incredible ability of concentration.

I was also somewhat clairvoyant, although not in the ordinary sense. Whatever I thought about with great intensity, I could see. I could see my own thoughts. That’s why I could tinker together an invention right in my mind, without needing a laboratory to experiment in. I could see the tangible reality of my thoughts. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 57-8.)

Both Edison and I demonstrated the potential for genius and creativity in humanity. It is well to preach and speculate about the ultimate nature of man, but the only hard evidence that can safely pass inspection is what people actually do! Edison demonstrated what it means to solve problems, be practical, and to persist until a solution can be worked out. I demonstrated the virtues of the inquiring mind. (1) The other contributors to this series (2) also demonstrated aspects of the potential for man’s genius. These examples are the reliable indicators of the nature of reality – of man and the cosmos – not idle speculations. If more people would look at what has been done, they would find the key to what can be done. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 85.)

(1) An interesting, perhaps more mellow, rephrasing of what Tesla wrote about Edison on the latter’s death: “He had no hobby, cared for no sort of amusement of any kind and lived in utter disregard of the most elementary rules of hygiene... His method was inefficient in the extreme, for an immense ground had to be covered to get anything at all unless blind chance intervened and, at first, I was almost a sorry witness of his doings, knowing that just a little theory and calculation would have saved him 90 per cent of the labor. But he had a veritable contempt for book learning and mathematical knowledge, trusting himself entirely to his inventor's instinct and practical American sense.” (“Nikola Tesla,” Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla.)

Disentangling Oneself

You are surely not living on earth in order to remain immersed in matter and to search there for your area of duties. This will lift itself to the degree you yourselves will rise and learn to survey: what you are to do; what is your calling; what you are to live for. The power for fulfilling your duties always comes from above and by immersing yourselves in the higher spheres you will learn how to fulfill the tasks according to the Creator’s will.

Judge, act, and fulfill while standing over and above it all. (Sigwart, BOTR, 89.)

It is difficult for a man not to mirror his times, for he is so tuned in to them that despite his attempts to disentangle himself, they dye his thoughts and he is everywhere surrounded by their cast [sic], which is shed alike upon all events and endeavors. Yet, unfortunately perhaps, the more a man finds himself acclaimed by his age, the more certain he can be that his insights are foreshortened. (William James in ADJ, 137.)

But if a person’s mind is given to philosophy – if the heart questions the head, and the head the heart – if the person seeks the answers to questions that rise like smoke from the fire of daily life, if mind and heart alike are united in their untiring search for what comes before and what comes after; then there is no recourse but to stand somewhat apart from the times. There is no recourse but to steadfastly refuse that concentration upon daily details that others find so fascinating. For such persons see alike life’s flaming patterns and the ghostly ashes left behind, the hearths of one civilization built upon the cold embers of another; and question incessantly.

The answers must come from another level that gives meaning to life’s daily context so the questioner treads a careful line of attending to life’s daily context and not attending at the same time. He must be involved and not involved. (William James in ADJ, 138.)

Man is always trying to assimilate, but the moment he does not pay lip service to society’s bogus ideas of outward decorum, it bars its doors to him. When his kind come here, Dad, they are made doubly welcome. (Mike Swain to his father, Jasper, in FMW, 61.)

You must not only be a part of life in life; you must be outside life too, observing not only your own actions but everyone else’s too. You’ll pick up a first-rate education in very short order! Always remember that by observation you can best learn how the laws of the Great One operate. You will be able to satisfy yourself of their validity. Whether we like it or not, they operate daily in every life on the surface of the globe. … /

The first thing you’ll notice as you begin to refine your life pattern is that you’ll start getting into trouble everywhere … with your family, with the authorities, with every conceivable link you have ever made with another human being. Take this as the gratifying proof that it was high time for your life to change.

When your approach complies with the three great Laws, (1) your mind (which may have been neither very positive nor very negative) suddenly swings to an uncharacteristically negative extreme. This sets up an upsurge of all negative forces strong enough to influence your fortunes in life.

You will find that those who know and love you best will now become exasperated by you. Up to now they were probably able to predict your responses to any given set of circumstances. Now your thought processes only confound them. Most of them will ask you what the devil has gone wrong with you. You can indulge in no outraged protests when this occurs. Protest silently, and weigh the situation very carefully before you make another move. (Mike Swain, FMW, 76-7.)

(1) Which Mike has described earlier as being the Law of Love, the Law of the Group, and the Law of the Land. The Law of the Land means following the just laws that pertain in the society in which we have been raised.

Receptivity must precede higher development: but we yearn and pray for the time when you shall have shaken yourselves free from earthly trammels, and seek only after the higher revealings of Truth. To that end you must have singleness of purpose: you must have shaken yourselves free from human opinion, and have dissociated yourselves from the material plane, so far as an occupant of earth may do so. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 163.)

As the Master said to His friends, “Be in the world, but not of the world.” So shall those words of your Sacred Records be fulfilled in you: “Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 168.)

Learning to Shut the Psychic Doors

Blavatsky: You’re enjoying a period in your history when there are great markets and stores. These stores draw in all sorts of people, especially when there are sales. Unless a sensitive person knows how to shut his telepathic doors, he is vulnerable to picking up all sorts of horrible ideas from the greedy, materialistic types of people who tend to gravitate to these sales. Really, one of the worst things that is exchanged among people is greed. This is the malignant end of telepathy.

Leichtman: What sort of damage could a malicious mind do through telepathy? Blavatsky: For one thing, a malicious mind is somewhat aware that it is malicious. At least the inner being is aware – something is aware. I don’t wasn’t to be too specific here; there are several aspects of being that are aware that the personality is malicious. But what this all means is that the only way the personality can live with itself is by making everyone around him become worse. And so, malicious people will frequently take their own psychological problems and implant them in people around them. In effect, they go around saying, “Aha, you’re sick, too,” or, “You’re sicker than I am with the same disease.” Or, “You’re greedier than I am.” That’s the sort of thing.

When malicious people want to control someone else, they do so by implanting all sorts of psychological limitations in the subconscious of their victim. And it would take a modern psychiatrist a good deal of time to unravel it – if he could at all. There are a few who are enlightened enough to know that this kind of thing occurs, but unfortunately it is not included in the body of official psychiatric thought and comment. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 34-5.)

Personal Situation of Mediums

Getting through childhood can be very difficult for a person destined to be a medium. As a child, he may be very shy, easily frightened and frustrated, and a bit nervous and sensitive. His interests and behavior may seem unusual at times. As a result, his family may misunderstand what’s going on with him and get very upset. If the reaction of the family is improper, the child can easily develop some emotional problems. (Arthur Ford, PP, 130.)

Early Years of Mediumship

We were talking with a man who had been on that side for many years, and knowing that he had been concerned with the wave of psychic phenomena that spread over the country some seventy-five years ago, we asked him to tell us about it. He replied:—

"There was much real mediumship, but all along material lines. I was interested for a long time; but it did not lead to any better or higher life, and did not impress me as being at all heavenly, so I gave it up at last. No one knew the cause of the manifestations, and all were hunting for some explanation. I could not see any good arriving from it, and I tried to account for it in some logical material way. But it never was explained satisfactorily to me until I came here, and could see for myself just the influences and experiences that could go forth from earthbound spirits on this plane."

'I think I have been told that at times you heard sounds like the steps of a dancer, a man whom you had known?'

"It was more of an impersonation. I cannot explain it just as I wish. But it was not my friend, only an imitation by the medium of some characteristic of his. He had not at that time come into a very advanced state, but could possibly have sent an impression of himself to the medium. I have not learned the truth, as he has advanced to a higher plane now, and I have not talked with him about this appearance."

There seems to be a hint here that some physical manifestations may not be directly caused by spirit; they may be caused by suggestions from a spirit source, and carried out unconsciously by the medium. (Unnamed spirit to Charlotte E. Dresser in LHH, 131-2.)

Treatment of Mediums

From many the power of proclaiming their mission has been taken away, and it has been falsely said that we have filled the asylums, and driven our mediums to madness, because blind ignorant men have chosen to attribute insanity to all who have ventured to proclaim their connection with us and our teaching. They have decided, forsooth, that to be in communion with the world of spirit is evidence of madness; therefore, all who claim to be are mad, and consequently must be shut up within the madhouse. And because by lying statements they have succeeded in affixing the stigma, and in incarcerating the medium, they further charge on us the sin they have invented of driving our mediums to madness. Were it not ignorance, it would be blasphemy.

We have brought nought but blessing to our friends. We are to them the bearers of Divine Truth. If man has chosen to attract by his evil mind and evil life congenial spirits who aggravate his wickedness, on his head be the sin. They have but tended the crop which he has already sown. He was mad already; mad in neglect of his own spirit and body; mad in that he has driven far from him the holy influences. But we deal not with such. Far more mad indeed are those besotted drunkards whom you deem not mad. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 32-3.)

Remember all gifts of talent or mediumship are precious, priceless helps to progress; to be fostered and tended with prayerful care; to be abused or prostituted with terrible risk. They do but mean that their possessors live nearer to God and the angels; are more readily impressed by them; more open to assault by evil; more amenable to influence for good; and so to be cared for and protected more earnestly. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTSW, n.p.)

Fair Livelihood for Mediums

Anyone who has a gift given to the personality, whether it’s a psychic gift or an artistic gift, should understand that it was given to help him make his way in the world. Any psychic or medium who puts service first and then accepts a reasonable fee for the amount of time and effort put into the work is certainly within his rights. There is no karmic problem involved in this: exchange is, after all, one of the laws of karma. Jesus certainly received food, clothing, and shelter for His work. This was reasonable and was expected. It was freely given and accepted. (Edgar Cayce in PP, 73.)

Warnings about Mediums

Those mediums who have been sincere and have helped suffering people so often and have learnt to shut out any undesirable control, and who have a reliable guide on our side are well looked after when they come here. But many so-called guides are not wholly reliable; I met one myself in my work who was just self-inflated and wanted power and not being advanced or wise enough to have it here, had turned to the earth-plane instead, where, like many of his kidney, he was overrated because he had crossed the barrier. Also, the “guide” may be only another aspect of the medium. (Philip Gilbert in PTS, 45.)

Everyone hears about the “Madame Zenobias” of the world, who keep giving readings long after their psychic abilities stop. (Ruth Finley [“Joan”] in PP, 227.)

Warnings to Mediums

In the spiritual life, as well as in psychic endeavors, we are dependent upon the integrity, dedication, intelligence, and maturity of each aspirant. Nothing can replace these qualities. (Arthur Ford, PP, 126.)

Lying in any way, shape or form – even if it’s a lie of omission – has a very serious karmic consequence. It’s something that’s not easily balanced. If a doctor malpractices, that produces social karma that has to be taken care of – probably through an expensive court case. When psychics malpractice by being untruthful, society generally takes care of them, too. (Edgar Cayce, PP, 73.)

It is a thousand pities that the great gift of knowledge of this life should so often have to come through the offices of selfish mediums who may be inclined to financial speculations. Such persons do not really sense the heavenly gift; they get only some small unworthy conceptions of which they repeat to credulous humans for the shekels it may bring. (Unnamed spirit in LHH, 80.)

'Do you think the knowledge of real spiritual truth is spreading?'   "We are told that it is. There is ever a benumbing influence because of money-making mediums who use their powers only as a fortune-telling scheme. But there are more and more educated and spiritual-minded people who believe in the immortality of the soul, and in the truth of the love and life and progress that are made known here." (Unnamed spirit to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 81.)

To those who in frivolous frame of mind place themselves in communion with the spheres; to those who force themselves from low motives in that which is to them only a curious thing; to the vain in their own conceit, the triflers, the untruthful, the worldly, the sensual, the base, the flippant, there is doubtless danger.

We never advise any of unbalanced mind to meddle with the mysteries of mediumship. It is direful risk to them. Those only who are protected and guarded round, who act from no inner motive, but in obedience to the impulse of the guardians, who are wise and powerful to protect, should meddle, and they carefully and with earnest prayer. We deprecate always any unlicensed meddling.

Nor can any safely mingle with the spirit-world, and so introduce one more disturbing element into his earth-life, except he be of even mind and steady temper. Any unhinged mind, spasmodic temperament, fitful, purposeless character, becomes the prey of the undeveloped. Doubtless it is perilous for such to meddle, more especially if their interest be only in the marvellous, to gratify an idle curiosity, or to solace their own vanity. The higher messages of the Supreme are not audible to such. Would that they who can hear them would forsake the trifling of the lower spirits, and, leaving the inferior planes, press on to the purer atmosphere of the higher spheres of knowledge. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 164.)

Leave behind all that is of earth, so far as that may be. Quit even the personal views which only hamper us; and reach steadily forward to the enduring and eternal. In most cases that which is personal ends in the selfish and trivial. With such we have little to do. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTSW, n.p.)

None should seek for mediumship but those who are selected, and round whom a protecting band ministers. For these alone are safe in the work; and they only as long as with honest and true hearts they seek to do the work of God to His honour. Self-seeking, self in any form, vanity, pride, ambition, these are fatal snares. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTSW, n.p.)

The dangers attendant on the lower forms of mediumship are very real. First, because this phase of mediumship is so apt to fall into use as a mere gratification of wonder or curiosity, to be sold for gain. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTSW, n.p.)

None escapes the Law; particularly, all who have heard the voice of the spirit. If they fail, it is worse for them than for those who have not heard.

When your eyes are opened and your hearts have received the love that comes with the power of the spirit, when your minds have had the revelations of spirit truths, if after that, you fail in service, the greater is the punishment that comes to you, for you have done it with knowledge and not in ignorance. There are many mediums who could be instruments who have sold their gifts for thirty pieces of silver. (Silver Birch, TSB, 48.)

Medical Knowledge from Spirits

Any technique for the prevention of cancer … has to be directed at the causes of cancer, which lie in the astral or mental bodies – the patterns of the emotions and the mind. The true causes of disease are patterns which block the expression of the qualities of the soul. This blockage may occur at a far deeper level than the physical or etheric body. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 53.)

Doctors who are interested in working with psychic material should carefully observe with an open mind who is doing medical readings of any sort. If [the medium] can perform, then perhaps he should be listened to.

I am not saying that a group of doctors – even the group sponsored by the A.R.E. – should look only for me. There are other people who can do the same work. If the doctors make a little effort to look for some of them, a lot of medical problems could be straightened out very quickly. (Edgar Cayce, PP, 71.)

The doctors and scientists have to be willing to look for high-quality mediums... I don’t know why scientists keep running to the low-level people for demonstrations of psychic and mediumistic abilities. They seem to have a knack for finding the worst ones available. (Edgar Cayce, PP, 72.)

Sometimes the author’s authority is not always a recommendation for a book. Some of the doctors, for example, who write about psychic phenomena aren’t writing from personal experience, but by observing others and then making theories about how they think it works. These are just intellectual exercises; their theories are constructed out of nothing more than straw and tinker toys. The add nothing of value to the occult literature. (Arthur Ford in PP, 101.)

Spirit Fallibility and Individuality

Spirits are not Infallible

This world does not confer omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence. (Philemon [Archdeacon Wilberforce], LFOS, 8.)

I, alas! am no more and no less a scientist than when on earth. I have to learn. (Philemon [Archdeacon Wilberforce], LFOS, 6.)

To think the human being becomes perfect as soon as he lays his physical body aside is the greatest error. (Sigwart, BOTR, 9.)

I know more, I can see farther than before, but one is not instantaneously omniscient after having disposed of the material body! (Sigwart, BOTR, 6.)

We are neither omniscient nor perfect; we are freed spirits who try to absorb the knowledge of this world. (Sigwart, BOTR, 53.)<> It is necessary for you to remember that spirits speak according to their experience and knowledge. Some who are asked abstruse questions give replies according to the measure of their knowledge, and are in error. But do not, therefore, blame them. We believe that we state what is accurate. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 34.)

Just because somebody has passed over to the other side does not make him an expert! I tried to say this earlier: mediums should be very careful to evaluate the statements made by any spirit. (Arthur Ford, PP, 132.)

In this invisible world there is infinite variety of conditions. I can only speak of what I know. I do not claim to be infallible. (F.W.H. Myers in RTI, n.p.)

I am trying as best I can to explain to you what I can only dimly visualize myself. (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 204.)

Don’t expect me to know it all, my dear. (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 220.)

You know, darling, I am only learning myself – or re-learning, I’m not sure. (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 215.)

We are not saints by any means — just mortals, with the mortal part mostly eliminated and something a little finer in its place. (Spirit control Mary Bosworth in SWSL, 82.)

You must not think me omniscient [simply] because I have not got … my old body. (Julia Ames, AD, 115.)

Who will not trust his own soul has lost it. And who will not rely upon the voice of God in his own soul will seek for it in vain in the voices from beyond the Border. (Julia Ames, AD, 120.)

We have not attained. We press forward to the mark of our high calling here as there. Think you that we are transfigured into the fullness of His glory because the earthly house of our tabernacle is dissolved? Nay, verily. We are as we are. When our earthly garment decays we remain. (Julia Ames, AD, 112.)

We are not made infallible because we put off our bodies. We see many things you do not. But we are making progress through darkness into light, through ignorance into knowledge. And hence it is that while we may, and I hope often will, say what will help you and enable you to guide your way better, we never arrogate to ourselves the right to dictate. We are only too glad to impress you with our thought. But it is not Divine wisdom – only the thought of your friends who, being disencumbered of their earthly bodies, have the open vision, and dwell in the land of Love and Light. (Julia Ames, AD, 94.)

I am, you will understand, limited by what I know, limited by my own experiences. So I can only endeavor to write of the truth as I perceive it. (F.W.H. Myers, RTI, n.p.)

There are vast horizons quite beyond our perception, stretching limitless into the infinite. (F.W.H. Myers, RTI, n.p.)

Truth is far from us all. (F.W.H. Myers, RTI, n.p.)

[On the matter of how spilled fruit juice evaporates and returns to its source:] That is the explanation I was given and that is what we all know to occur in any other circumstances of a similar nature. If you ask me how it happens, then, perforce, I will say honestly that I do not know. Lest my ignorance should appear too great that I should ever set myself to inform others, let me hasten to add that there is no one in these realms who could provide an explanation upon this point. There is no esoteric secret about it that such information should be withheld from us. It is just that our spiritual evolution has not proceeded sufficiently far for us to understand if we were told. What we cannot yet understand ourselves, it is impossible for us to expound for your understanding. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 113.)

We must take things as they are in this instance at least. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 117.)

Sometimes I meditate on our ultimate destination, but usually I am content to leave this and carry on with my work. (Philip Gilbert in PTS, 44.)

I have not been here long enough to begin to understand God’s Plan. I look forward with excitement to the fuller understanding. (Thavis, TIH, 84.)

I am not perfect. None of us are perfect. Only God is perfect. (Thavis, TIH, 90.)

Neither spirits nor mortals can know everything and spirits can only give you what are the teachings which their own particular schools of thought and advanced teachers give as their explanations. Beyond this they cannot go, beyond this they do not themselves know; there is no more absolute certainty in the spirit world than on earth and those who assert that they have the true and only explanation of these great mysteries are giving you merely what they have been taught by more advanced spirits, who, with all due defeence to them, are no more entitled to speak absolutely than the most advanced teachers of some other schools. (A. Farnese, WSL, http://www.sacred-texts.com/eso/wsl/wsl35.htm.)

I feel it my duty to tell you something of what the angel and the Messenger said, not because I understand or believe it all, but because they have been good to me. They have recognized my ignorance, [but] have not scoffed at my unworthiness. I have not come to preach, to show the way to heavenly states. I do not know my way there so how could I guide you? You are probably nearer heaven than I, though still on earth. Because I pass on what has been told to me, do not think that I am a ‘superior’ person. Do not think that I say must be true. It may be. I cannot tell myself. (Thomas Dowding, PD, 37.)

I am only in a higher stage of development here, and need to progress every day toward the Source of all light, just as you do. I have greater powers, fuller opportunity than you have, and freedom from all earth’s sufferings and limitations. But I am just your John, knowing my own imperfections a great deal better in this pure and holy atmosphere than I ever did on earth. Indeed, I am a babe in all things here, where all beauty and perfection are blended, and where the wisdom of all the ages is concentrated. (John Heslop, SABL, 45.)

I don’t profess to be infallible on this or any other point. I can only give you what I believe to be true and I do believe with all my soul in the absolute divinity of Jesus Christ. All I told you of His being in touch with this world in the early dispensation, I have gathered from records of that period and I have hear from some of the higher spirits.

Here we hold many views on these great questions. Always remember that our minds have a natural bias, owing to our earth training. For instance, a Roman Catholic would give you a different view of truth from a Theosophist, both having passed to this side. None of our minds instantly grasp all these great truths; we grow up into truth as we study and pray. Therefore when you desire light on any one point, open yourself directly to the source of all light and truth – God Himself – that he may guide and teach you. Personally, I am giving you what I firmly believe to be true in the immaculate conception and the Divinity of Jesus. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 100-1.)

Now about the book you are reading. I see it is perplexing you because the account of the intermediate life given by the spirit author differs in so many points from what I have told you. The reason is simply this. We are all at our different points of progress here and our spiritual vision is entirely a matter of development. The author had not seen the vision of God in Jesus Christ at the time he wrote, possibly not even yet; he has never entered the temple within the Christ Sphere, and, so, not having had these experiences, he does not believe they exist.

You must never look upon what comes from spirits on this side as final utterances of truth, for they are not. We can only tell you what has been our own personal experience and what we have learnt from Higher Intelligences. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 131.)

So many come here with their spiritual nature practically undeveloped that they see nothing of the Saviour at first and conclude He is not there. Others, who have sought their Lord on earth, are so wrapped round by creeds and exclusiveness that they too must free their souls of these wrappings before they can find the Christ in the higher atmosphere of unselfish love and service. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 131-2.)

Do not accept everything we advise you as the only possible solution of matters in your lives. Remember that we judge differently than you on earth. Certain points we do not see as clearly as you because with us the big issues are in the foreground, whilst with you small things may spoil or help. We rely on your judgement and good sense particularly as we rarely see the bad points. You must not think that our views which are based on a spiritual existence are unfailing. Act through your own wisdom. (Baron Palmstierna, Swedish envoy to Britain, in Paul Beard, LO, 115.)

I want you first to realize that by the change of death you do not become part of the Godhead immediately. The mysteries of life are not revealed to you as a kind of welcoming gift on your arrival here. You must not think that I, or any, have full knowledge on all subjects, profound and trivial, the moment we come to spirit life....I cannot tell you when your grandson will next require new shoes ...nor can I tell you the settlement of the Irish question. I can only see a little farther than you, and I do not by any means possess the key to the door of All Knowledge and All Truth. That, we have each to work for ... and as we pass through one door we find another in front of us to be unlocked ... and another, and another. (W.T. Stead, BI, 103-4.)

In this communion between the outer and the inner worlds, you in the outer world are apt to think that we in ours know everything. You expect us to prophesy like fortune-tellers, and to keep you informed of what is passing on the other side of the globe. Sometimes we can; generally we cannot. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter VI.)

There is something I want to qualify in what I said the other day, that there is nothing out here which has not existed on the earth. Since then I have learned that that statement is not exactly true. (1) … Bear this in mind: I merely tell you stories, as an earthly traveller would tell, of the things I see. Sometimes my interpretation of them may be wrong. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XII.)

(1) Judge Hatch illustrates the predicament of listening to the newly-arrived.

I have talked with many people here, people of all stages of intellectual and moral growth, and I am sorry to say that the person who has a clear idea of the significance of life and its possibilities for development is about as rare here as it is on the earth. As I have said before, a man does not suddenly become all-wise by changing the texture of his body. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXVII.)

But Spirits Often can See Around the Corners

You can’t see round the corner because you are walking in a lane with high hedges, but I, in a plane overhead, can see both you and round the corner. (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 153.)

I do not always see the future in detail. I see the general trend. It is like a broad outline into which the little bits of mosaic hop, to form a whole. (Philip to Alice Gilbert in PTS, 11.)

We have now another sense which is superphysical and it enables us to see beyond the limits of your five physical sense. It is a more extensive vision and makes it possible to see further into the future or even into the past. It makes it possible to see into the world we have left. We have also the ability to do far more than was possible before, because our mental powers are greatly increased. (Gordon Burdick to Grace Rosher in TR, 34.)

I have a secret. Somebody will die and leave Mumbo a little money. At least I saw that. I can’t tell you when. But it will be a great help. (Child Elizabeth B. to E.B. Gibbes in Geraldine Cummins, TS, 74.)

Yet, as we are not far removed from earth, we do register its sorrows and troubles to a certain extent, and feel the need to help as we can. This is because we see things much more clearly. Our increased knowledge of life and its meaning is a great help in seeing how many of the problems can be solved. (Gordon Burdick to Grace Rosher in TR, 51.)

'Just how much can you foretell?'

"Not much. We can see circumstances and the probable results, and many are able to tell the future somewhat from them. But I do not think I am gifted in that way. Some people seem to have a gift of prophecy; yet it is a psychic gift, or possibly a keen intuition, that can foresee results from certain conditions.” (Unnamed spirit communicator to Charlotte Dresser, SWSL, 19.)

Aunt Rose has developed a deadening of her fingertips and her ‘saw-bones’ in Durban has diagnosed it as Reynard’s disease. I want you to tell her that he’s dead wrong. The numb fingertips come from trouble in her circulation; but plenty of other local doctors are capable of diagnosing it correctly. One of them will, in fact, cure it. (Mike Swain to his father, Jasper, in FMW, 34.)

Q: Do spirits foresee the future?

A: That, again, depends on their degree of advancement.  Very often, they foresee it only partially; but, even when they foresee it more clearly, they are not always permitted to reveal it.  When they foresee it, it appears to them to be the present.  A spirit sees the future more clearly in proportion as he approaches God. After death, the soul sees and embraces at a glance all its past emigrations, but it cannot see what God has in store for it.  This foreknowledge is only possessed by the soul that has attained to entire union with God, after a long succession of existence. (Unnamed spirit communicator to Allan Kardek in WASTAK, n.p.)

Time, of course, is different. There’s no such thing as clock time here for we are able to eliminate time as well as space, since we are able to will ourselves to be anywhere at any moment of earth time and are able to look ahead so far into what you call the future that this also transcends the earthly idea of time. (1) (Arthur Ford in WB, 14.)

(1) In all likelihood, Ford is speaking from the Mental Plane, where his powers are greater than those who reside on the Astral Plane. If this were the case, it bears out Allan Kardec’s statement: “A spirit sees the future more clearly in proportion as he approaches God.” WASTAK, n.p.

Spirits Disagree with Each Other

“We have our different personalities here as we did there, and we do not all look at things in the same way here any more than we did there. If you can receive the ideas of many from here it will aid you in forming a more correct understanding. If you only have one person's messages you only get their viewpoint and their way of expressing it. I have been here many years as earth time goes, and I have myself seen fit to change my ideas about some things more than once, as I obtained a fuller understanding of them.”

"We know that there are certain fundamental truths, just as you know there are certain fundamental laws. But in the various things which surround these truths there are matters which we can interpret according to the impressions they make upon us. We might use as an example the attitude that most of us take here in regard to the union of the two sexes. When I first came over I was thoroughly convinced that there was no marriage in heaven, and for a long time I could not see that there was anything to indicate it. I saw men and women associating freely and independently, and although I saw apparent friendships of more than usual intensity, I did not think of them as inseparable. If I had been communicating with earth at that time I would have conscientiously said that there was no mating here that was lasting. But now I know that the two sexes are drawn together here some time by indissoluble ties. And of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Unnamed spirit, LHH, 39-40.)

"I might also tell of the first ideas I had regarding the way children grow and reach maturity. I saw children occasionally, and I saw teachers instructing them at times. But I did not understand that they grew up here just as they do there, only more rapidly. I thought they always remained children; and I associated some of them with the ideas I had on earth of 'cherubs.' It was really quite an astonishment when I did learn the truth. I could hardly believe it, so firmly fixed were my first ideas.”

"In matters of a more abstract nature I see I am even now not in entire agreement with many fine advanced spirits. We have minds to reason with, and when certain facts are given us we use them according to our own personality, just as two carpenters will build different houses out of the same materials.”

"I could give you many examples. In caring for the newcomers, I have different views from many. But I have succeeded and they have succeeded, so who is right?”

"You may think that I am something of a freak, perhaps, but I can assure you that I am not unique. We find much pleasure here in the fact that we do have different personalities and different ideas. It makes life more enjoyable in every way. If we all thought alike we should necessarily all be alike, and we most of us think we prefer variety." (Unnamed spirit, LHH, 40-1.)

On What Spirits will Agree and on What They Will Disagree

You will find that the spirits who will communicate to their friends through the Bureau (1) will make very different statements. They will differ indefinitely according to their different temperaments and the manner of soul they are.

They will make statements which will differ so much as to confuse those who think that the infinite multitude of individual experiences can all find a single expression. There will be any number of creeds based upon after-death experiences, which vary according to the character of the individual. The man finds this world very much what he has made of it. We all make what we live in. And as every one makes a different future life for himself they will all give you different versions of the life they lead. You will find a little uniformity here as on your side. But, nevertheless, you will find that the Bureau, and all who would use it, will agree upon certain things. They would differ endlessly about the laws, the theories, and the possibilities, but they would agree about the Facts of Being. (Julia Ames, AD, 117.)

(1) Julia has suggested to Stead that he start a psychic bureau through which the aggrieved can make contact with their “lost” friends and relatives and be assured that death is not the end of life or contact.

You will not find from us on this side any authoritative declaration as to any religion that will be recognized as true by all spirits communicating. They are of all stages and phases, and the religion of some will be absolutely unthinkable by others. (Julia Ames, AD, 118.)

But this you will find. There will be no spirit of any stage of development who returns to communicate through your Bureau, but will affirm that there is no breach or break in the continuity of individual existence. They will all tell you that death is a transition rather than a transformation and that, although the transition is very important, it in no way destroys the life of the soul. All will tell you that. All will testify to the fact that they went on living a conscious existence, that was marked off by no gulf from the life they led here. There is, no doubt, a change. But it is of circumstance rather than of character. The memory appears to be quickened rather than dulled. The mind sees more clearly.

The phantasmagoria of matter disappears, and the masks and masquerading that conceal the truth dissolve away - that is important and that is universal. There is not one spirit who returns, who will assert that the matter in which you are immersed is a vapour, a mere phantasm of the mind, which vanishes away and is not. Spirit alone is, whether in the body or out of the body. And the soul lives, lives on. These two things: continuity of conscious identity and the hollowness of matter they will all tell you are known to them, are universal facts which they will attest one and all. Where we are there can be no mistake on these points. (Julia Ames, AD, 118-9.)

Lastly comes the seventh state, the merging of the journeying soul with its spirit. When you attain to that beatitude you pass into the Beyond, you realize the meaning of the word immortality. Matter is transcended, cast off. You enter into timelessness and become one with the Idea behind all life, one with God, one with that portion of His Spirit which has been connected with you in all the planes of existence. (Frederick W.H. Myers, RTI, n.p.)

I don’t see how [Frederick Myers in the book The Road to Immortality] can possibly know about the seventh plane (1) and how one feels in it because no one who has got that far has come back, even to this plane, to tell us. It seems to me that no one could put down the Nature of the Infinite Cause in a few hundred words. I feel he was setting out, as many do, even here, his own philosophy – a very lofty and possible one, but only … his facet.’ (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 140.)

Mortals Must Sift Spirit Truth from Untruth

You tell us that the world does not believe the messages from here because of the false teaching that comes to earth from those pretending to be heavenly guides. It is true that many undeveloped and mischievous ones on this plane are sending false and foolish teaching to whoever will receive it there. Yet, does the world abandon religion because of its grievous errors? Do teachers stop teaching because ignorant ones put forward wrong ideas? Do honest men give up their honest business because dishonest ones are busy in graft or robbery? Do physicians stop healing the sick because of the unlearned pretenders in their profession?

Good and evil have gone on together since the world began, and it is still a conflict even on this plane. It is for the wise ones of earth to recognize the truth in the teaching from here, and to discard that which is not true. Learn to discriminate. Learn to discover the spirit beneath the words, and judge of its sincerity by its spiritual value. (Unnamed spirit communicator to Charlotte Dresser, SWSL, 10-1.)

Spirit Views on Truth

Philosophy in Spirit

When you come to this side you will learn that philosophy is a greater study here than on earth; it is treated as a more comprehensive subject. We include all that you would class under ethics and religion. In fact we make it include all the studies of life as they pertain to the advance of the soul. ,It is not a subject for debate or controversy; just one of inquiry. It has drawn many of the great minds of earth into its study, as they have learned its value on this side. We have as a consequence many who are looked up to as great leaders in philosophical thought, and we hope in time to give you some of their conclusions. (Spirit Control Mary Bosworth to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 101.)

There is so much that is not understood. Life, human and spiritual, is so complex that it takes long to even understand it, to separate the good from the evil. Volumes could be written upon life and thought, upon unconscious motives, subconscious evils, but it would take more of a philosopher than I ever expect to be to explain and classify. (Spirit Control Mary Bosworth to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 104.)

Matter, (1) Soul (2) and Spirit. (3) (Frederick W.H. Myers, RTI, n.p.)

(1) Holy Ghost.
(2) Son.
(3) Father.

We asked how God's existence was proven to them.

"We know by the powers already manifested that no being less than the Almighty could create. We know through messengers from higher planes. We have the testimony from Christ, who is so near to the Highest, that he can tell us of His very presence. But perhaps most of all, is the absolute impression upon our inmost spirit that we are guarded, cared for, and raised into higher intelligence and purer life and joy by an influence outside ourselves. We know this with an assurance you can hardly understand; but it is more than sight, hearing or touch." (Spirit Control Mary Bosworth to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 114-5.)

Few, though, are of my philosophic spirit. There are more saints here than philosophers, as the highest ideal of most persons, when intensely active, has been towards the religious rather than the philosophic life. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XVI.)

Spiritual Traditions on Earth

If we think of the whole planet as being a single entity, then the spiritual tradition of the East represents the entity’s development of understanding and unity with God and the spiritual tradition of the West represents that entity’s development of divine talents, creativity, and productivity. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 85.)

[The Westerner] preoccupies himself with bringing heaven to earth whereas the Easterner focuses himself on lifting earth to heaven. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 86.)

Of course, once a certain level of enlightenment has been achieved, the differences [among religious traditions] begin to fall away and the similarities emerge because the individual is dealing more with the love and wisdom behind the tradition and not the tradition itself. Those are universal realities. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 89.)

The Mental Approach to God

It is a gross error to assume that there are not … ways of approaching God in which the mind [plays] an important and constructive role. God certainly can be approached through the mind; it just happens to be a different mode of operation [than the emotional or devotional approach], which can either be used instead of or in conjunction with the devotional mode. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 109.)

I believe the development of the mind as a spiritual vehicle is the next step in human growth. I would be so bold as to say, however, that the perfection of the emotional path to God was necessary before humanity moved on to learning the mental path to God and learning to use abstract mental faculties. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 109.)

The Western tradition is focused much more on the mental level and has a much stronger emphasis on the precise articulation and verbalization of ideas, spelling out the nuances and variations in subtle shades of meaning. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 90.)

[Nevertheless] a teacher might be justified in teaching certain people to set their minds aside temporarily so they can explore the emotional and devotional approach to God more easily. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 110.)

Empirical Materialism vs. the Truth of Spirit

There is no such thing as supernatural. All is natural, and our Lord is the Lord of all. (Julia Ames, AD, 64.) Science is nearing the end of its frontier, and the reason why is because it is so pigheadedly materialistic. Science believes that, if you can’t push it, knock it, shove it, or measure it, it just doesn’t exist. So it ignores most of life.

Many scientists have exactly this kind of attitude. They are like the people who used to believe the earth was flat. They need to accept the possibility that the universe goes beyond their own limited view. Beyond their horizon, there are invisible realms of existence waiting to be explored. That’s where science needs to go! (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 64.)

You there live by unseen forces. Your body could never serve you but for the unseen force of life. Eyes, ears, limbs, even thought, all play upon the wonderful instrument you call body. Do not forget that this mechanism of the body may be as perfect after that which you call death, as during life; though all that fine mechanism is without power, because the unseen force called life has withdrawn itself. But it goes on functioning in a new body, and with far greater ease and power than before. (Unnamed spirit in LHH, 83.)

The Evolution of the Human Race on the Subject of Death

Life on earth can but last a few score years at most. Men must prepare and train themselves for the wider life whilst on earth. Call attention to the conditions on this side of the veil so that men may come over to their homes and not into a country that is strange. (“The Messenger” in PD, 73.)

As the [Human] Race grows in spiritual understanding, the need for the veil will disappear. It is part of the Divine Plan that this should be so. (“The Messenger” in PD, 74.)

When the thick mist lifts from the borderland between your world and ours, a new and more spiritual era will begin. The soul arriving will bathe in light and gravitate immediately to his own haven of rest and harmony. The fear of death will disappear. Man will pass across the river joyful and unafraid. Those he leaves behind will watch his journey with eyes undimmed by tears. They will see the friends waiting to welcome him into the wider world. He will be allowed to relate his new and wonderful experiences to those he has left behind. There will be no fog between. Materialistic thinking and the fear of death have raised the barriers separating our life here from yours. (Private Thomas Dowding, PD, 75.)

Spirit Views on Love

Strike This Rock

Oh, my friend, … you do not know the volume of refreshing water that will rush forth if you strike this rock and save this people from perishing in the arid wilderness of unbelief. I am not now speaking about religion. I am speaking about love.

There is love in this world like the water in the sea. Its waves are waves are wailing and sobbing on the shore of human life; but you cannot hear, you do not understand. Why not try to flood your world with this heavenly love? Is it not worth while doing? If not, what is worth doing? (Julia Ames, AD, 62.) You have met persons who seemed to radiate sunshine, whose very presence in a room made you happier. Have you asked yourself why? The true answer would be that by their lovely disposition they attracted round them a "cloud of witnesses" as to the joy and the beauty of life.

I have myself often basked in the warm rays of a certain loving heart I know upon the earth. I have heard spirits say to one another as they crowded round that person, "It is good to be here." Do you think that any evil thing could happen to him? A score of loving and sympathetic spirits would strive to give him warning should any evil threaten. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XLIII.)

Wherever there is a bond of love, there is an unbroken line of communication. (Mike Swain, FMW, 56.)

Love is the Foundation, Building, and Coping Stone of Religion

Intellectual religion does not help you at all. It serves a purpose in convincing a certain class of mind of the truth, but unless the one so convinced goes on to practice by unselfish love and a holy life, the great truths he has acquired intellectually, it profiteth nothing. Love is the foundation, the building, and the coping stone of all religion. Meeting together for worship augments and then liberates this love and brings the Peace of God into the souls of the people. Prayer and Love are the most potent influences with heaven to bring down spiritual gifts to men. No man prays alone. The very attitude of prayer brings Holy Ones to his side to aid his supplications and lift them heavenward, for they know how difficult it is for man to pray aright. And the Master said, “Where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there am I in the midst of them.” (John Heslop, FMABL, 75-6.)

As I am talking now about love and devotion, I am tuning into these qualities. From my perspective, the few words I am saying about them are simple and immensely crude for they are inadequate to convey the fullness of devotion and love I am experiencing.

If you were my students, and for the purpose of this interview, let’s say that the three of you are my students, I would not teach you about the nature of love and devotion by lecturing you about them at great length. I might say a few words, as / I have just done, but my major way of teaching you would be to create an atmosphere of intense devotion to God and flood your little group with it, drawing you into this atmosphere so that you experience a true level of devotion and love – not in words, but by sharing with you the presence of God., And that should tell you much more than I could ever say with words. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 89-90.)

The genuine act of loving God leads to a downpouring of divine love through the personality, moving you beyond the realms of form into the life of spirit, in the key areas of your character and activities. You become more motivated by spiritual matters and how the spirit builds than by the expectations and desires of the personality. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 112.)

Getting to know this love of God and learning that an individual’s devotion to it is always returned in much greater magnitude is the starting place of all spiritual growth. … The goal … is to become one with God. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 85.)

It should be remembered that the human personality is primarily concerned with the forms of life – the perceptions of the physical senses and the daily experiences and duties of life. It is designed to interact with forms, manipulate forms, build and destroy forms, understand forms, and nourish forms. But as the aspirant begins to invoke the love of God by loving God himself, this very quickly reorients the personality to the perspective of spirit. …

Now, spirit is not concerned with form at all; it functions in terms of consciousness and builds through the focused use of divine love, which is magnetic. The soul has a qualitatively different approach to life than the personality of the average person. But as a person begins to work with love, that helps him change his perspective relatively quickly so the he begins working with the life of spirit. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 112.)

You can have a realization of divine love and then spend the next fifty years or fifty lifetimes deepening the quality and intensity of that realization. The experience of contacting divine love is not just something that happens and then it is over. It becomes part of your life because it is much more than a feeling or a sensation. It’s an experience of oneness, of infinite benevolence, of consciousness itself. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 119.)

Spirit’s Views of Good and Evil

Good is Positive and Strong

No evil is positive in nature, but only negative. It is the negation of good. (Arnel in G. Vale Owen, LBV3, 81.)

All that is good is strong. (Arnel in G. Vale Owen, LBV3, 81.)

Earth’s View of Spirit

Earth’s Ignorance of the Spirit World

Absurd as it may seem to us, there are still far too many people on earth who refuse to believe in our existence. (Ethel McLean in LFM, 67.)

There are many who will query and possibly reject these communications. Be not discouraged. The seeds have been sown and the harvest of understanding, be it great or small, will enrich the lives of many on your earth. (Brother of Light in LFM, 95.)

I can't understand the people who say that "spirit return is possible, but wrong," because only "devils" or "evil spirits" can communicate. Surely God would not reserve this His great comfort and gift, the assurance of continued conscious existence, solely for the wicked? (Claude Kelway-Bamber in CB, 15.)

There are many people in the earth world who earnestly believe that we in spirit live in a continual state of perfervid religious emotion, that every concomitant of spirit life, every form and degree of personal activity, every atom of which the great world of spirit is composed, must have some pious, devotional signification. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 110.)

There are still many, many souls on earth who solemnly uphold it as an article of ‘faith’ that paradise, as they call it, will be one long interminable round of singing ‘psalms and hymns and spiritual canticles.’ Nothing could be more fantastic. The spirit world is a world of activity, not indolence; a world of usefulness, not uselessness. Nothing in the spirit world is useless; there is a sound reason and purpose for everything. Neither the reason nor the purpose may be plain to everyone at first, but that does not alter the truth of the matter. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 110.)

We do not inhabit a land that bears all the outward marks of an Eternal Sunday! Indeed, Sunday has no place, no existence even, in the great scheme of the spirit world. We have no need to be forcibly reminded of the Great Father of the Universe, by setting aside one day to Him, and forgetting Him for the rest of the week. With us it is eternal day, and our minds are fully and perpetually conscious of Him, so that we can see His hand and His mind in everything that surrounds us. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 111.)

This is no land of eternal rest. There is rest in abundance for those who need it. But when the rest has restored them to full vigor and health the urge to perform some sensible, useful task rises up within them, and opportunities abound. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 111.)

Some of us, as you know, are in pretty close touch with events and affairs on … earth … and some of us can see which way they are drifting. Can you imagine, then, how the great beings in the highest realms must regard the situation, when supreme wisdom is to be had for the asking, if only incarnate man were not so blind? (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson to new arrival Roger in MALIWU, 147-8.)

The spirit world is right and the earth world is wrong in so many things. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 148)

Well, it isn’t Canaan Land, but my mother was of the small-town evangelical pattern and to her it still seems like it because that is what she expected to find here.

Let’s clear out the minds of those on your [earthly] side who cling to those childish patterns of imaginative thought. It retards their progress here to expect such nonsensical things. Instead of clothing the truth with so much fluff which takes time to strip away, it would be better to proceed with the work at hand. (Arthur Ford in WB, 15-6.)

The churches, of whatever denomination, suffer from abysmal ignorance. Throughout the ages right down to the present time, they have gone their own blind, ignorant way, disseminating fantastic teachings in place of the truth, and paving the way, through the universal ignorance begotten of such false teachings, for the forces of evil to operate.

A minister of the church performs the services and offices prescribed by his particular sect and he stifles all inspiration by holding to creeds and dogmas that are utterly false. … If he were interrogated in the matter he would reply that he believed in inspiration – in a vague, remote way. In the long run he would find it much less trouble to borrow the religious thoughts of some other incarnate person and rely upon his own cleverness for any original thought. But to suggest that the spirit world has any influence upon the earth world other than evil would be totally against his principles. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 187.)

When you are on earth, this whole spirit world is regarded as the “life after death,” the “next world,” and is treated solely from the religious standpoint, except by a comparatively select few. I call them select because those few possess the truth – not all the truth, naturally, but sufficient for absolute comfort. The religions of the earth have assumed rights over this life to which they are not entitled. The passing from earth to the spirit world is not a religious affair whatever. It’s a purely natural process and one that cannot be avoided. Living a good life on earth is not a religious matter. Why should it be? (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 36.)

What a mournful, miserable business it all is, when you come to think about it. Here is this magnificent world we’re living in and yet on earth it has been shrouded and obscure with a multitude of extraordinary beliefs, conditions, limitations, misconceptions, and I don’t know what else besides. The one cannot be reconciled with the other. Like oil and water, they do not mix. Unlike those two substances, there is nothing with which to emulsify them, so to speak. …

The whole thing can be summed up in this way…: the earthly religions know nothing about this world at all, about the life we live. They do not seem to be able to conjure up in their minds any sort of vision or image of what it might conceivably be. But they are certain of what it cannot be – upon what authority no one knows – that it cannot be anything like this at all. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 37-8.)

[Some] believe that to know, or even to try to know, anything about the “after-life” is against Holy Writ. So there is another “dead-end.” … [Many] people read [the Bible] piously – perhaps too piously – and fail to perceive that it is crammed, literally crammed, with psychic lore of every kind. They will swallow whole accounts of it, but because these phenomena still happen, now, they will have nothing to do with them. If it was right in those far-off days – and it was – then it must be right now – which it is. Officially, of course, there is silence. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 49-50.)

You can see, Roger, what difficulties are in the way when it comes to official acknowledgment of the true manner of life in the spirit world. That is why the truth is in the hands of unofficial folk. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 52.)

It’s not so very surprising that hundreds of people, when they arrive here and find out the truth, go about like a “mighty wind” and want to go back to earth to shout the truth at last to the folk they’ve left behind them. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 53.)

The chief trouble with the Churches is that they cannot make the truth about this world fit in with their theology. They don’t realize that they are going about things the wrong way: they must make their theology fit the truth, and that means a wholesale clearance of everything that does not accord with it. At present they prefer the shadow to the substance; they prefer creeds and doctrines and dogmas. They are not realists – far from it. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 54.)

What is the conclusion? There’s only one: that something is wrong somewhere with all the theology. The theology doesn’t fit the facts. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 56.)

“We Wish You Could be Enlightened About Our World”

We would wish you could be further enlightened in regard to some of the wonders of our land, for then it would seem more natural to you, both during your sojourn on earth, and also when you come over here it would be less unfamiliar to your mind. The former in that you would see that earth is heaven in embryo, and heaven is but earth cleansed and made perfect; and the latter for reasons quite obvious. (G. Vail Owen’s mother in LBV1, 64.)

Spirits are Not Real

"I am here just as surely as you are there, and more so; because I am all that life can give, and you still have the limitations of material life, which prevents the fullness of spiritual expression."

'But you do not seem real,' we said.

"Reality is something that exists. We exist, mind exists, and all the things created by mind exist as long as the mind holds them in existence. We exist, but not in material form. But spirit is higher in the scale of existence than matter; therefore, we are more real / than we were in our material forms. Life here is reality, and we have spiritual forms far better than the earthly ones. All the finer qualities of mind and soul are expressed by us in greater degree than before we lived the spiritual life.

"There is no life but spirit anywhere in the universe, but the material envelope in which it is enclosed oftentimes hinders free expression. We are trying to free the spirit a little from its earthly encumbrances and let it see its destination out among the stars." (Unnamed spirit communicator in SWSL, 78-9.)

“We Care Not a Fig for Your Views of Us”

If the truth be told, we care not a fig for what the earth people may think of what we do or do not and we are certainly not going to take orders from such inferior minds, or, indeed, from any kind of mind on earth! (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, MALIWU, 42.)

It is [mistaken] to imply that certain regions of the spirit world have been constructed upon earthly lines; that the earth has been taken as a model and the spirit realms built upon that model and that they therefore constitute something of a replica of the earth. Exactly the opposite is the truth. The earth bears a limited or modified resemblance to these realms, which is a different matter altogether. Spirit lands, in the realms of light, are a thousand times more beautiful than any part of the earth it is possible to mention. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, HH, 84.)

At times we may feel saddened – and at time we are amused – by those who, still upon the earth, ridicule and pour scorn and contempt upon our descriptions of the spirit lands. What do these poor minds know? Nothing! And what would these same minds substitute for the realities of the spirit world? They do not know. They would take away from us our beautiful countryside, our flowers and trees, our rivers and lakes, our houses, our friends, our work, and our pleasures and recreations. For what? What conception can these dull minds have of a world of spirit? … They would turn us into wraiths, without substance, without intelligence, and merely surviving in some dim, shadowy, vaporous state, dissevered from everything that is human. In my perfect health and abounding vitality, and living among all the beauties of this world of strict reality – a mere hint of which I have only so far given you - I am forcibly impressed by the magnitude of ignorance shown by particular minds upon earth. (Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson, LIWU, 23-4.)

Walling Out Spirit

Growth depends upon love and service; and you limit the area of both when you put a wall of iron between the spheres. (Julia Ames, AD, 59.) You have had teaching as to the communion of saints; you say and sing all manner of things as to the saints above and below being one army of the Living God, but, when any one of us on the other side tries to make any practical effort to enable you to realize the oneness, and to make you feel that you are encompassed about by so great a cloud of witnesses, then there is an outcry. It is against the will of God! It is tampering with demons! It is conjuring up evil spirits! Oh, my friend, … be not deceived by these specious outcries! Am I a demon? Am I a familiar spirit? Am I doing what is contrary to the will of God when I constantly, constantly try to inspire you with more faith in Him, more love for Him and all His creatures, and, in short, to try to bring you nearer and closer to God? (Julia Ames, AD, 61.)

Incessant Demands for Physical Marvels

We are nearer the Infinite than you are, and are therefore more naturally conscious of the power of the Infinite, and do not require to have it manifested in detail or in finite form to the same extent as you do. People on the earth-plane clamor for materialization; they are not conscious of those passed over unless they can see them in some form. (Claude Kelway-Bamber in CB, 71.) Were [the seeking of physical manifestations] harmless we should say so much. But being what it is, an engine of assault from the adversaries, the worst we have to dread, we are urgent in warning you against promiscuous seeking after these physical marvels, and against resting in them as the end and aim of intercourse with us. Regard them only as means of conviction, as so many proofs to your minds of actual intervention from the world of spirit with the world of matter. Look upon them as such only, and use them as the material foundation on which the spiritual temple may be built.

Rest assured that they of themselves can teach you no more than that; nay, if the operating spirits find in you no capacity to grasp more, they will gradually give way to those who can do such work better than they can, and so the means of further knowledge will pass away. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 162.)

The Impatience of Some Spirits with Lack of Recognition of Their Presence

"We grow impatient here at times at the delay of earth people in their recognition of our presence, especially by investigators whose word would have much authority if given in our support. We have given the world proof after proof, and yet they want still more. We think the time has come for us to insist that they give their attention to the vast accumulation of evidence, and make some use of it.

"No honest investigator has really denied the reality of our manifestations. But it is so difficult to get them to publicly admit it. We are trying to use our influence now to have some one make a thorough analysis of the quantity of material that is in their hands, with the determination to show that there is sufficient to supply a firm foundation for a spiritistic belief."

We said that Prof. Richer had made some analysis of that kind, but had failed to arrive at a spiritistic belief.

"We know. We hoped he would be the one to do it. We think there are several others who will be amenable to our influence, and we hope for some show of success." (Spirit control Mary to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 129.)

Psychological Issues

A Spirit View of Psychology

It is possible to look at human nature as it manifests itself in behavior and personal relationships. You can observe all kinds of variations in the behavior – for example, how someone treats a policeman differently than a priest or a car salesman or a waitress who sells him coffee and donuts. Or you can imagine the habits, ambitions and self-images of people. These are the phenomena of human nature. They can be observed.

But you can also go beyond observation and begin speculating on why these people behave in those very different ways. As you do, you have to appreciate that there are some profound inner dimensions to human consciousness. They are real, even if they are not well understood.

Eventually, as a result of these speculations, you begin to suspect that there truly is an inner seed of character in every human being – a tremendous inheritance of good and bad, of potential and disease that influences people from deeper dimensions. This is a subtle but powerful and persistent influence on human behavior.

As you speculate in this way, your mind begins to leap up to some of these more subtle levels of thought. You come close to the essence of the idea you’re pursuing, until you actually begin to summon the very presence of your own soul.

The soul, of course, is not just an idea, but it lives on the level of pure ideas. It begins to impress upon your intelligent, speculating mind the reality of its presence. It nurtures and stimulates a train of thinking which, if sufficiently pursued, will lead to some degree of realization about the inner nature of men and women – that they are spiritual beings and that all the phenomena of human behavior can be traced back to a spiritual core.

This core is the real centre of our life force, the real cause of our good in life, and all the varied experiences of our humanity in daily living. When you understand that, you’re dealing with the essence of human psychology – the essence of all ideas about human behavior. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 43-4.) You’re going to see a day when people like you and David are going to be able to contribute in a professional way to the process of psychoanalysis. Now, you have a medical degree and David does not, but both of you – and others like you – can be enormously helpful; it’s going to take doctors who want to become a little enlightened.

It’s encouraging nowadays to go to a psychic conference and hear doctors talking more than psychics. I just wish that sometimes they would get a psychic doctor up there. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 75-6.)

The main point, so easy to forget, is that each person is the hero or heroine in his or her own life. Everything else, all actions, seem to revolve around us personally in life. This is not an illusion, but a fact of metaphysics and psychology as well. (William James in ADJ, 134-5.)

Each person’s vantage point in the universe is his own, a platform for all of his acts that can be possessed by no other, is inviolate, and, in an inexplicable fashion, absolute. (William James in ADJ, 135.)

We are each so unalike that we might be members of different species entirely, so diverse is the nature of our inner realities, so different is one person’s soul from another’s, one person’s challenges, dreams, and intimate contact with life. (William James in ADJ, 135.)

Each person living or dead is somehow a unique materialization or actualization, psychologically “perfect,” of this basic loving condition or psychological, atmospheric presence. Each person is himself or herself, and an agent for the universe at the same time. The universe leans in each individual’s direction, gives, and is compliant for each person is a part of that psychological fabric, coming to life. It is as if the universe were a multidimensional cloth with infinite patterns and figures which did not remain flat but sprang alive, lived, moved, and died and came alive again, while the fabric of which they were made never wore out but miraculously revitalized itself and rewove its parts.

The patterns and figures are constantly changing, and the very stitches with which they are made are composed of the basic fabric also so that there is everywhere communication between all of the parts at that level. Each figure changes the quality of the fabric, however, adding immeasurably to it through experience for each life multiplies the actions possible to all of the others, on this common level. (William James, ADJ, 163.)

Personality is the greatest fact in the universe. We here believe so thoroughly that man is the final achievement in the universal plan, that we recognize at once that the most perfect man would be the highest achievement. And the most perfect man is the one who best succeeds in filling his appointed niche; which means the one who makes the best use of his talents he possesses. If all were given the same talents all would achieve the same perfection if they were successful; and we know that such a condition would not be satisfactory. But where there are different perfections, different personalities, we have a variety that is endlessly satisfying. (Unnamed spirits to Charlotte E. Dresser in LHH, 79.)

John Hewitt: Is one’s spiritual body largely determined by his character?

Stewart Edward White: By your character as developed over several lifetimes and several interludes on the other planes. This is the character of the immortal part of you. (Stewart Edward White in PP, 201.)

Individuality, Personality, and Spirit

“It is I” can only be uttered in such a voice by one whose individuality (1) is so vast as to be almost universal, one who has dipped in the ocean of the All, yet who knows the minute by reason of its own inclusiveness. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXXV.)

(1) The utterance came from an angel, known to Hatch as the “Beautiful Being,” who has no trace of personality but retains individuality.

When you have read of the appearance of those who come from the higher, or inner, planes, do you not find they are described as shining figures radiating light, rather than as having shape? That is because personality has gone. It is because there is less of the bodily expression about them. (Silver Birch, SBA, 58.)

The higher spirits who come to your earth are influences or emanations. They are not what you describe as persons, but emanations from higher spheres. Learn to recognise the impersonality of the higher messages. When we first appeared to this medium he insisted on our identifying ourselves to him. But many influences come through our name. Two or three stages after death spirits lose much of what you regard as individuality and become more like influences. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Some of the higher spirits have, as I know, almost lost their identity. There comes a time when the individuality is dissipated and enlarged, and becomes a centre of influence. The exalted spirit, Imperator, who directs this medium, bathes me in his influence. I do not see him, but he permeates the space in which I dwell. I have received his commands and instructions, but I have never seen him. The medium sees a manifestation of him, which is necessary in his case, not in mine. (Elliotson in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Spirit is in itself eternal. We will speak of it first before it reaches your earth. It had a prior existence in the spheres which underlie, surround and control your world. All spirit finds its home in space till it takes upon it a body of flesh. Spirit is developed through various processes up to the time of incarnation. It becomes a microcosm, a representative of that divinity of which it enshrines a spark, and thus it becomes powerful over matter. One of the properties of matter is inertia. It can do nothing. It is governed and animated by spirit, which spirit is individualised when incarnated. …

Spirit, in order to manifest, must be substantial and have a form, though spiritual. In the spirit-world there are the same gradations of substance that you have, such as vegetable, mineral and animal. Thus the change from your world to ours is only a change of condition. A man born blind cannot understand what light is; yet, if he gains sight, he has only changed his state, not his place. So, when you have thrown off your material body, you will not have changed your place, only your state. (Unnamed Egyptian spirit in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Formlessness: this, my child, is an attribute of the source only, in its ultimate expression from whence none who have merged therein have yet returned in form. It is beyond the peaks of silence and the sea of desire – beyond things, yet ceaselessly expressed in them. (The Unknown Teacher in PTS, 41.)

Seven-Year Cycles

Look at the lives of the people you love and who are the most important to you. You will see that every man’s life breaks down into dive important phases. From the hour of his birth, the incarnating soul has been learning to occupy the new shape he has found himself stuck with. Until the age of seven, he is preoccupied by the problem he has found himself stuck with. Until the age of seven, he is preoccupied by the problem of how to gain attention to himself and how to coordinate his limbs!

Between the ages of seven and fourteen, he starts to develop emotions; he starts to experience love. And he starts to develop a temperament! /

At fourteen, he faces the crisis of adolescence. The emotional body begins to take control of the physical body.

From the age of fourteen, the intensity increases until his mind awakens at twenty-one.

From twenty-one to twenty eight, the mind advances until he begins to realize that there is more to life than he first thought.

From the age of twenty-eight, the mental body takes over and learns how to adjust itself to the lower emotional and physical bodies.

By the age of thirty-five, this process should be complete (if it is ever going to be). The man is now mentally orientated.

From thirty-five to forty-two, he becomes aware of something else in his life. This is due to the probing of his soul, which is now seeking means to control the mind.

From forty-two to forty-nine this process intensifies. During this period, the man becomes aware of the presence of his soul.

From forty-nine to fifty-six, he realizes that there is much more to life than selfishly “eating high off the hog.” He begins to wonder whether he has actually achieved anything in his life or whether it was “all vanity and led but to the grave.”

The conclusion is reached between the age of fifty-six and sixty-three. Either he decides to serve out his sentence to the bitter end, in the hope that [he] will finally solve the riddle of existence, or he elevates himself to the Golden Plane. He may go through an interminable array of lifetimes, but the pattern will always fall into these seven-year cycles. (Mike Swain in FMW, 79-80).

Care of the Body

It is part of our mission to teach the religion of the body as well as of the soul. We proclaim to you, and to all, that the due care of the body is an essential prerequisite to the progress of the soul. So long as spirit is prisoned in the earth body through the avenues of which it finds its expression on the plane of matter, it is essential that you care intelligently for that body, lest it react on the spirit and affect it injuriously.

Yet it is only in rare cases that intelligent discrimination is exercised with regard to food and clothing, and the habits of life which have so great an effect on spirit. The artificial state of existence which prevails, the ignorance with respect to all or nearly all that influences health, the vicious habits of excess that are so nearly universal, these are all bars and hindrances to true spiritual life. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 105.)

Goodness

'If all become perfectly good, it would almost seem as though life would become monotonous?'

"We have more varieties of goodness than the mortal life can show. You will be surprised at the difference in individuals on a plane where none are perverse or wicked. Then think of the different occupations and industries, the different arts and sciences, of travel to other worlds and the wonders revealed there. Think of oratory, music, poetry, and the light/ and winsome touches that writers of humorous literature have brought to this side; and you will realize a little how, instead of monotony, we have infinite variety." (Spirit control Mary Bosworth in SWSL, 80.)

Laughter and Tears

One of the great vulnerabilities of the basically happy person [is that] some people use unhappiness and grumpiness to strike a sympathetic response from the happier fellow. But I learned early in life that, rather than feeling sorry for such unhappy types, it was much more enlightened to crack a smile and draw them out of their shells. I intuitively knew that what these people needed was a good laugh. (Will Rogers in MTR, 56.)

A sense of humour is one of the best resources we have to help us live with our problems and burdens and even lighten the load a little. … The person who can see life humorously develops a healthier perspective about life. He starts to see that the problems he faces are really problems the whole of humanity is facing – and often with amusing results. This lets him laugh at his own problems and keep them in balance. (Mark Twain, MTR, 18.)

Good humor is contagious…. It’s supposed to infect you with merriment and a sense of delight which lifts you up, shakes you out of your rut, pulls you out of your dark mood. (Mark Twain, MTS, 19.)

Sober, grim individuals tend to repel people of good sense, rather than attract them. (Mark Twain, MTR, 21.)

A healthy interplay between the inner being and the personality is extremely important, if we are going to honor our basic inspiration and the work we are doing. Now, this connection tends to close down when the personality becomes excessively serious and grim. Those aren’t the wavelengths on which the inner being operates. (Mark Twain, MTR, 21.)

Humor breeds detachment. In fact, the average person – who does not have the ability to look at life from the perspective of the inner being – humor is just about the only way to achieve any degree of detachment. And even though the divine connection may not be there, the detachment achieved as a result of being able to laugh at one’s mistakes, embarrassments, and troubles is very important. It is healthy for the personality. (Mark Twain, MTR, 22.)

Humor stirs up the good elements already in the personality and lets us entertain the possibility that perhaps the world is a funnier place than we had thought. Perhaps life is more beautiful than we had imagined. Perhaps our difficulties are not quite so grim and our future not as bleak as we had feared.

I suppose that in people with a rich potential for expressing goodwill or joy, a state of good humor helps them make the connection. It certainly does have a healing potential which is not given enough credit. (Mark Twain, MTR, 22.)

The sense of humor we are talking about here does not have to include the ability to tell jokes and be funny. It is the ability to appreciate good humor and the funny quirks of life. When we speak of humorless, grim people, we are talking about those people who cannot laugh at life and expect everyone else to be as serious as they are. Many people who couldn’t tell a joke to save their lives nonetheless have an excellent sense of humor. (Mark Twain, MTR, 23.)

The motive of good humor is to stimulate a bit of delightenment, to use a word of yours that I like very much – to delight the people in the audience or the people reading the book. The motive of the vicious use of humor is to darken the atmosphere with put-downs and destructive comments. (Mark Twain, MTR, 25-6.)

It’s the meanest, crabbiest people in the world – the people who are really out to exploit others, to take all they can and give nothing in return – who are usually completely lacking in a sense of humor. They are amused by nothing and don’t like jokes being played on them. They certainly cannot stand it when someone else makes fun of them or anything they do.

Well, God gave us a sense of humor to protect us from these grumpy, crabby people. And the most laughable thing of all ought to be the popular belief that the devil is happy and God is depressed! That’s utterly absurd. It’s just the other way around. (Mark Twain, MTR, 29.)

Let me share a little secret I learned a long time ago. If you go at problems with a pious and uncompromisingly serious attitude, you will generally not receive very much support from others. People don’t want their noses rubbed in their problems: if you take that attitude, they will just refuse to consider the problem at all. They will ignore it – and they’ll ignore you. But if you approach problems humorously, satirically, you can often be quite successful in educating people to the real dimensions of the problem. Political satire, in particular, can be extremely effective in this regard because it gives us a way to look at the policies and acts of government which are especially oppressive and absurd, without becoming depressed. (Mark Twain, MTR, 29.)

A sense of humor can also be the cutting edge of your kindness. The funny thing about most people’s problems is that they are extremely obvious to everyone but the person who has them. It’s very easy to see everyone else’s problems, but when it come to your own, you live with them all the time and it’s difficult to see what they are. It’s like the skin on the back of your hand; it’s been there all your life. So you accept it without further thought. (Mark Twain, MTR, 33.)

While humor on the physical plane is used to approximate the joy of the inner planes, it in no way comes close to what we can experience up here. (Will Rogers in MTR, 52.)

One of the best road signs for telling how far along the spiritual path you are is the amount of joy you express. When you just feel like singing or laughing or dancing – when you’re so full of good cheer that you cannot contain it – now that’s a good sign. After all, doing the Father’s work should make you happy and joyful; it should make you feel like singing, because singing and laughing and dancing are also related to speaking the Word. They are the physical grounding of an act of joy. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 44.)

When you laugh, your whole aura laughs. Your whole being laughs. It’s the most healing thing you can do. Now, I’m not just talking about just laughing, but laughing out of joy and laughing in celebration. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 66.)

I heard you mention earlier in the evening that laughter has the effect of turning away evil. This is quite true. For a black magician to attack you, he has to enter into a negative state of consciousness. It’s impossible to laugh and be joyful in a negative state. You could, perhaps, indulge in a dirty laugh, but not a joyful one. So, if you know that you’ve undergone some kind of psychic attack from a black magician, the best thing in the world to do is to just laugh, knowing that it’s incredibly funny that anyone would ever lower themselves to do something so comical as trying to attack you. The laughter is health-giving in many ways – particularly in an occult way. It’s like putting up an impenetrable wall. The only power stronger than laughter in a case of attack is the Christ light. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 66-7.)

Now, I certainly don’t want to start a cult on this or be accused of starting “Laugha Yoga.” … But laughter does vitalize the etheric body. That’s not properly put, but I can’t put it better. Laughter draws in the prana of joy. There are different kinds of prana, you know. The prana of joy is – well, it is the champaigne and ice cream of the inner planes. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 67.)

Laughing and expressing joy when you’re happy do so many good things for you – they even heal the mind. Maybe someone can come up with a laughing psychotherapy. Wouldn’t that be wonderful! Instead of screaming and kicking, the patient would laugh at all his past traumas. The analyst would say, “Look how funny you were when you were two and wet your pants! Look how funny your mother was for thrashing you for it!” … Don’t you think that would be much better than some of the approaches they’re taking now? I do. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 67-8.)

Well, even the capacity to cry from genuine sorrow at times has a beneficial effect. Anything that moves a person to tears, whether it’s in joy or sorrow, is an indication of a deep value system. In some forms of psychotherapy, particular the ones that grew out of the Frankl school [Viktor Frankl, a Viennese psychiatrist and developer of logotherapy], if they can’t make somebody laugh, they’ll make him cry – but with the understanding that he’s crying because he has a value that’s very deep, very spiritual, and it’s been violated. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 68.)

Joy

I have seen the Beautiful Being itself, more than once, hovering in ecstasy above an earthly creature who was happy.

A song of joy, when it comes from a thrilling heart, may attract a host of invisible beings who enjoy it with the singer; for, as I have told you, sound carries from one world to another. …

A joyous heart attracts joyous events. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XLIII.)

The best measure of your psychic development or spiritual growth is how it changes the quality of your life - what you learn from it and the joy you gain. In fact, that’s the best measure of how well you are doing anything, psychic or not – the joy you derive from doing what you are supposed to be doing. (Ruth Finley [“Joan”] in PP, 232.)

Happiness we know is in store for all who will strive for it by a consistent course of life and conduct commendable to reason and spiritual in practice. Happiness is the outcome of right reason, as surely as misery is the result of conscious violation of reasonable laws, whether corporeal or spiritual. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 66.)

Beauty

Whatsoever is beautiful is always true, and that is one of the laws which stand out in front of others in these bright realms. Conversely also, whatever is ugly and ill-favoured in form outwardly, will, on closer study, be found lacking in the grace of truth. Truth, as we use that word, means that which is consonant with the Mind of the Ultimate Whom you call God and Father. All that flows from Him is orderly and in harmony with the highest and fairest aspirations of us, His offspring. And what answers to this quality is beauty, for beauty is that which pleases; and harmony is a garment of love which is always pleasing to them who in their nature respond to love's endearments. It is only those in whom there is some tincture of love's opposite that have no relish for such a feast as Love alone can spread.

And, mind you, Love is not alone of God, but God Himself. So all the beauty of landscape and of the waters and the comeliness of a face or form we know to be such a manifestation of Him from Whom they derive / their beauty, and, as truth is only what is in concord with the thoughts of Him, so we say that whatsoever is beautiful is true, and whatever is true must manifest itself in beauty. (Arnel in G. Vale Owen, LBV3, 77-8.)

Mind and Thought

A thought—no matter the heading it comes under—that has come into your mind and which you have sent out, is an accomplished thing so far as your mind goes. Your physical act may or may not keep swift accompaniment with the thought; that does not matter from the point of view of what you are building up for yourself here. Once having had this thought it is done, so far as your mind is concerned, and, whether you follow it up actively or not, you have to make repayment for it when you come here. I am not speaking about the thousand trivial thoughts of every hour, but about those which I might describe as having personality. …

Each of you will live to thank the person who is responsible for giving you this information if you act upon it, and those of you who hear and know but do not act upon the knowledge, will have one day to cast reproaches upon yourselves for this failure. (W.T. Stead, BI, 80-1.)

Leichtman: There are a lot of people who label themselves as quite spiritual who say that “the mind is the slayer.” What would you say to such people?

Blavatsky: They don’t understand the correct use of the mind. Yes, the mind slays, but do you know what it slays? It slays fantasies, misconceptions, and illusions. The mind is meant to penetrate badly-stated concepts and soft and sort until the truth is discerned. (1)

There is nothing spiritual about stupidity or ignorance. We all have a spiritual obligation to understand ourselves, our relationship to God, and our duty in life. If we aren’t going to use our minds to do this, I wonder what these people suspect we ought to do. … This talk is utterly foolish. We must use the mind to find and comprehend God. Granted that comprehension might be terribly limited, but we must make the effort.

I would remind people that God has a mind and a portion of that mind is placed in every individual. It is our spiritual duty to honor it and develop it as best we can. That doesn’t mean that we are all going to turn into illumined adepts, masters, or saints, but it does mean we should make the best use of our mental potential. We should never let ourselves be limited by someone else’s stupid misconceptions. You never know how much your mind is capable of until you try to use it. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 25-6.)

(1) Compare Mrs. Blavatsky’s point with that of enlightenment teacher Andrew Cohen: “In the experience of meditation, we leave the mind alone. We allow ourselves to experience being, free from the influence of thought while in the practice of contemplation, which is the intense, focused, one-pointed pursuit of truth, we do use the mind. In contemplation we use thought in order to help us discriminate between truth and falsehood.” (WAI? 3.)

You cannot see, as we see, the almost utter worthlessness of what you call opinion. You cannot know, while yet the eye is veiled, how the veil is rent by the dissolution of the spirit from the earth-body; how the speculations that have seemed so all-important are seen to be but idle, baseless fancies; while the germ of truth that has underlain the theological creeds is found to be very similar in essence, albeit of divers degrees of development. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 28.)

Creativity as a Path

To be healthy, a creative person does have to give birth to his creative ideas. And it really is giving birth. (Spirit communicator “Stephen” in PP, 239.)

You are supposed to do something which you do not do and so there is a karmic reaction to the lack of action. Karma is the principle of action/reaction. … If you block the birth channel of your creative ideas, you are going to have to suffer the “inflammation” that results. (Spirit communicator “Stephen” in PP, 239.)

You should always give birth to whatever ideas inspire you. You wouldn’t always want to put them out for society to view, but the birthing is very important. (Spirit communicator “Stephen” in PP, 239.)

Using what you have is the best way to obtain more. … Using what they have is what opens room for more to develop. Let me explain it this way: if you get a creative idea, and then write it down, or draw it, or put it in a piece of music, then you’ve made room for the next great idea, haven’t you? (Spirit communicator “Stephen” in PP, 240.)

If a person works at satisfying his healthy, honest curiosity about life, his efforts will also lead him to the Father. And soon, he’ll know that no matter what lead he’s following, he’s always find the Father at the end of it – and it’s so much fun finding Him! It’s such a great joy! And I think He enjoys it, too. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 44.)

Latent Tendencies, Life Patterns, Unfinished Business, Vasanas

The tendencies of any given life, the unexplained impulses and desires, are in nearly all cases brought over. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXII.)

In coming out a man brings his character and characteristics with him. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXVII.)

Since he bears in himself, not the memories of his past lives, but the tendencies (1) they have built into his being, his earth lives will be likely to show a typical pattern; he will tend to come up against the same order of problems and crises of fate in life after life even though each life may be set in a different era of world history and maybe in different countries or races. Ye his own particular pattern of response to environment and circumstance will recur unless and until he overcomes the weaknesses which invite it. While he continues to fail his tests, in fact, they will continue to recur.

I have heard of a man (2) who in life after life has been killed in battle during his youth. Never once has he been able to behave in such a way as to escape this fate. He has never known old age, nor will he do so until he can recognize and control the aggressive impulse at the moment of crisis and so conquer his fate. Then the pattern will take a different form and will be modified for good.

Another outcome of karma is the way in which each earth life recapitulates the pattern of those which have gone before in series as they originally occurred. If one thinks of it, one has always known that the embryo re-enacts every stage in human evolution and that birth takes place only when the fully human stage is reached. It now seems that re-capitulation goes on after birth as well, the pre-conscious lives being repeated during the early stages of infancy and later lives influencing the adolescent and the young man or woman. For instance, the phenomenal rate of growth of the head during early childhood may be a re-capitulation of a period of swift mental development during the early human phase. Later in life one can often observe sharply marked stages in the lives of men, sudden and unpredictable swervings aside from previous habits of life and behaviour, shown in changes of occupation and almost of temperament as each past life makes its influence felt. What a study is here! No wonder we spend so much time in our universities piecing together the evidence and trying to understand something of the wonderful processes at work. (T.E. Lawrence, PMJ, 92-4.)

(1) Hindus call these latent tendencies vasanas. They are the major barrier to enlightenment and thus to fulfillment of the purpose of life. See "Vasanas (Latent Tendencies),” here .
(2) Mitchell, Lawrence’s spirit guide, is the man he is talking about. See p. 99.

It’s helpful to become aware of the mechanics of the mind. There are many compartments of the mind that the average person is not familiar with. He is blind to them and so they seem obstructed to him. So it’s important to go through your mental attic and find out what’s there, how it got there, and what it’s to be used for. This is the great benefit of the mental housecleaning techniques you teach, although there are many other ways people discover the mechanics of the mind. Some do it on their own, some are helped by psychiatrists. Whatever impulse is the starting point, if the search is pursued seriously, it will eventually lead you to the pure awareness mechanism. You have to develop a methodology of the mind: how it works, what’s in there, how it got there, what has to be cleansed, and how best to use it. (Steward Edward White in PP, 207-8.)

Average people, of an earthy, material, greedy type, find themselves - they don’t quite know how – with similar people, once they have worked out their strong earth impressions (and this in itself may take centuries because it is far easier to impress a record on the mind than to erase it). It is all so difficult to explain. (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 204. I have rearranged the order of the words in this quote for comprehensibility.)

It is much harder to snap out of any folly or obsession [here than in earth life]. (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 222.)

I am realizing, in my work here, how much these mental ‘sound-tracks’ matter. It takes centuries to wear them out. I suppose they must wear out in Eternity, eventually. (Philip Gilbert in PTW, 217.)

Human emotion must be conquered if you wish to progress upon the Path. Weld it in your garment, enriching the fabric; begin to sew the fringe of gold. Eternity is your playground and your battlefield; cease to think and feel in the narrow limits of personality. (Unknown Teacher to Alice Gilbert in PTS, 85.)

There are old prejudices to be abandoned, old habits of thought to surmount, and these form a barrier [to spirit communication], and many souls never get their heritage on your side of the grave. They have to wait for the fuller revelation till they come here. (John Heslop, SABL, 44.)

If you widen your outlook while on earth, you have less to unlearn when you pass to this side. (John Heslop, SABL, 126.)

It is far easier to acquire this knowledge [of lessons unlearnt] in the earth surroundings than on this side, just as it is easier for a child to receive the groundwork of education, than for a man, when he tries to learn what was taught him vainly in his youth. (John Heslop, FMABL, 28-9.)

Q. Do you know how much I longed to write and thank you, when you were passing away, for all you had done for me? …

P. You have helped me more than you will ever realise till you too are on this side and someone is rendering you the same service. You have enabled me to forgive myself almost all my shortcomings, when you caused me to see what I had been in your life. And still you are helping me. (Spirit communicator Philemon, LFOS, 31-2.)

Q: Do spirits retain any human passion?

A: Elevated spirits, on quitting their bodily envelope, leave behind them the evil passions of humanity, and retain only the love of goodness.  But inferior spirits retain their earthly imperfections.  Were it not for this retention, they would be of the highest order.

Q: How is it that spirits, on quitting the earth, do not leave behind them all their evil passions, since they are then able to perceive the disastrous consequences of those passions?

A: You have among you persons who are, for instance, excessively jealous; do you imagine that they lose this defect at once on quitting your world?  There remains with spirits, after their departure from the earthly life, and especially with those who have had strongly marked passions, a sort of atmosphere by which they are enveloped, and which kept up all their former evil qualities; for spirits are not entirely freed from the influence of materiality.  It is only occasionally that they obtain glimpses of the truth, showing them, as it were, the true path which they ought to follow. (Unnamed spirit communicator to Allan Kardek in WASTAK, n.p.)

It is by no means impossible that a spirit may go on for ages honestly entertaining beliefs in themselves erroneous, though not pernicious. The guides see that other instruction is of more moment, and so the beliefs and opinions which have been formed in another state of being lie dormant.

But when such a spirit is brought again within the atmosphere of earth, all its old opinions, which have been dormant, are quickened into new life and come forth as of old. This is a necessary consequence of returning to the old associations, and is part of the same principle which causes the spirit to take on its old form and habit and even outward nature when it presents itself on the earth-plane again. You are familiar with the working of the same law. The flash of recollection when a chord is touched that has long ceased to vibrate; the memory recalled by a faded flower or a long-forgotten scene. This is why dormant error, not yet purged away, frequently becomes vivified and energetic when a spirit mingles again with old associations. (Spirit leader Imperator in MSTSW, n.p.)

Speaking Over Issues

We have all met people who have been deeply hurt by circumstances in their lives and some of these people do try to escape for a while into a state of artificial cheerfulness. They throw themselves into fun and game, if I may put it that way. They are laughing on the outside, but inside they are carrying a terrible burden. I’m not saying that these people are doing the wrong thing – they need to compensate. But it would be wrong to try to make a living at humor; their inner bitterness would show through. They would only be able to generate a sick type of humor, tinged with bitterness and sarcasm. They would not be truly entertaining and the mind of audience they might attract would probably be a little peculiar themselves. I would consider that an aberration of good humor. (Will Rogers in MTR, 68.)

Selfishness

Selfishness appears to us here as the foundation of all sin. It appears to be the root of all evil, and is insidious in its destruction of character. Selfishness may be only superficial or it may be deeply ingrained in the individual. The first may be overcome when true knowledge takes the place of vanity and superficiality the second is the foundation of so much evil that it is most debasing in effect, and most difficult to overcome. It masquerades often in fine dress, for many strive for beauty selfishly; make music and art a matter of personal pride; or adorn themselves with exquisite textures and priceless gems; and forget the deeper meaning of spiritual loveliness. The selfish use of wealth and power; lack of sympathy for the poor or suffering; pride; self-esteem:— all these, and many other manifestations of self love, are working toward spiritual atrophy. (Spirit control Mary Bosworth in SWSL, 137-8.)

Make it plainly known that selfishness embodies all other sins, for it is the yielding to self-love and self-indulgence that creates other sins. (Spirit control Mary Bosworth in SWSL, 10.)

Ultimate perfection can only be reached when all selfish desires have been overcome. (Jim McLean in LFM, 112.)

White: It’s very unpleasant to “see” elements such as greed and materialism in the spiritual body of people because you don’t see them as much as you interact with them. It’s not like you’re viewing a photograph which has no impact on you; you are being touched, at least to some degree, by the unpleasant elements themselves. This is true even if you are only picking up the sensation of these elements from a person walking by you on the street. Unfortunately, all too many people have these unpleasant elements in their character.

I would describe the sensation of perceiving these aspects of character as being something like feeling the rough bark of a tree. But it can be worse than that: many of these very materialistic people literally project psychic tentacles from their solar plexus, which they use to grasp the objects of their greed or lust. It’s extremely unpleasant to perceive these tentacles. Leichtman: That sounds like the equipment of the psychic vampire.

White: Yes, and you know from your own experience that you don’t just “see” these people – they come looking for you. They reach out psychically and drain away your energy, which can be very annoying. Now this is the invisible part of greed and lust; people don’t ordinarily see it, but it happens all the time.

Of course, the greed and lust are not always conspicuous. It’s the tendency to be very self-centred which leads these people to want to take your energy. (Stewart Edward White in PP, 202.)

[Selfishness] is the plague-spot of the spirit, that which wrecks more souls than you dream of. It is the very paralysis of the soul. And when to it is added this, … that the selfishness is passive, it becomes more fatal. There is a selfishness which is far less baleful in its poison, and which finds it counteracting power in activity, and which even becomes the spring of actions which have in them a form of good. There is a selfishness which causes a spirit to do well that it may have the good report of its fellows: and there is a selfishness which is content to do good so it be not vexed or troubled, which will yield to any influence, so it may escape anxiety. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 183.)

Lust

Beware of lust, beware of all sex attraction into which no spiritual or heart element enters. I have seen things that I would not wish to record, either through your hand or any other. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XLIII.)

Nay more. The soul has cultivated habits that have become so engrained as to be essential parts of its individuality. The spirit that has yielded to the lusts of a sensual body becomes in the end their slave. It would not be happy in the midst of purity and refinement. It would sigh for its old haunts and habits. They are of its essence. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 26.)

[After death the individual] sees how the germ of truth is at the base, helped in some to progress by a receptive mind and a clearer spiritual vision; hampered and clogged in others by a cramped intelligence and a debased earth-body. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 70.)

Yes, [impurity] is the sin of all others that degrades man below the level of beasts, and places him on the plane with demons. It cuts him off from the ministry of angels and from his God more than any other sin. Rome fell through it; also Spain. France has fallen. England is fast following the same example. Oh, if men did but know; could have their spiritual eyes opened for a moment to see the hosts of angels waiting to minister to them to keep them from temptation. But they do not know, do not see till too late. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MST, 27.)

This is spirit’s progress, and it may be said to be a process of regeneration, shortly typified by crucifixion and resurrection. The old man dies, the new man rises from his grave. The old man, with his lusts, is crucified; the new man is raised up to live a spiritual and holy life. It is regeneration of spirit that is the culmination of bodily life, and the process is crucifixion of self, a daily death, as Paul was wont to say. In the life of spiritual progress there should be no stagnation, no paralysis. It should be a growth and a daily adaptation of knowledge; a mortification of the earthly and sensual, and a corresponding development of the spiritual and heavenly. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 173.)

You must learn to cultivate the powers of your spirit, to subdue the flesh, and to rise above your earth surroundings; to view your external life only as the preparation for the inner and truer life. Ours is the reality, yours the shadow world. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTSW, n.p.)

Greed

I have seen a miser counting over his gold, have seen the terrible eyes of the spirits which enjoyed the gold through him. For gold has a peculiar influence as a metal, apart from its purchasing power or the associations attached to it. Certain spirits love gold, even as the miser loves it, and with the same acquisitive, astringent passion. As it is one of the heaviest of metals, so its power is a condensed and condensing power.

I do not mean by this that you should beware of gold. Get all you can use, for it is useful; but do not gloat over it. One does not attract the avaricious spirits merely by owning the symbols of wealth—houses and lands and stocks and bonds, or even a moderate amount of coin; but I advise you not to hoard coins to gloat over. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XLIII.)

Anger and Hatred

If you entertain the thought of hatred without doing something to neutralize it, it’s damaging. It leaves scars on the hater as well as the “hatee.” (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 40.)

Entertaining hatred and anger, you know, creates karmic imbalances that have to be straightened out in another time. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 40.)

When man is excited, exalted, or in any way intensified in his emotional life, the spirits draw near to him. … That is why anger grows with what it feeds upon.

And this last is the point which I want to drive home to your consciousness. When you lose your temper you lose a great deal, among other things the control of yourself, and it is barely possible that another entity may momentarily assume control of you.

This subjective world, as I have called it, is full of hateful spirits. They love to stir up strife, both here and on earth. They enjoy the excitement of anger in others, they are thrilled by the poison of hatred; as certain men revel in morphine, so they revel in all inharmonious passion.

Do you see the point and the danger? A small seed of anger in your heart they feed and inflame by the hatred in their own. It is not necessarily hatred of you as an individual, often they have no personal interest in you; but for the purpose of gratifying their evil passion they will attach themselves to you temporarily. Other illustrations are not far to seek.

A man who has the habit of anger, even of fault-finding, is certain to be surrounded by evil spirits. I have seen a score of them around a man, thrilling him with their own malignant magnetism, stirring him up again when by reaction he would have cooled down. Sometimes the impersonal interest in mere strife becomes personal; an angry spirit here may find that by attaching himself to a certain man he is sure to get every day a thrill or thrills of angry excitement, as his victim continually loses his temper and storms and rages. This is one of the most terrible misfortunes which can happen to anybody. Carried to its ultimate, it may become obsession, and end in insanity. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XLIII.)

“Sin”

Forget, if you can, the sins you have committed in the flesh. You cannot escape the effects of those causes; but you can avoid strengthening the tie with sin, you can avoid going back to earth self-hypnotized with the idea that you are a sinner.

Do not brood over sin. It is true that you can exhaust the impulse to sin by dwelling on it until your soul is disgusted; but that is a slow and an unpleasant process. The short-cut of forgetfulness is better. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter L.)

Domination

Many people, when they come to the astral world, experience a great deal of turmoil and distress because they have been too positive and too dogmatic in their earthly lives and have tried to impose that dogmatism on other people. I think you can find, if you will think about it and look back at your own lives, that there are times when you wish you hadn’t been so forceful in persuading someone to do something. When one does this, he is cutting across a divinely-given attribute of each person, which is free will. (A.D. Mattson, WOB, 75.)

Loneliness Can Be a Positive Sign

Aloneness is not loneliness if you make it a garment of union with the ONE. (Philip Gilbert in ITE, 68.)

Hand-in-glove with all your confusion is a paralyzing sense of loneliness. This is a direct result of the altered course of your polarity. Confronted by the positive mental polarity, the once-positive astral polarity has begun to founder. …

This forsaken loneliness is not something new. It has been suffered by every brother determined enough to set foot upon the Path. He must of necessity regress five miles into the negative, in order to advance six miles into the positive. As you are now entering the Great Brotherhood of Man, or the “Brotherhood of Light,” you will plow your way into an isolated bank of loneliness before you can claim equality with the emancipated company of which you are now a junior member.

One begins the ascent of the Path under the chaotic conditions caused by the switch in polarity; so one will be overwhelmed by loneliness. Be prepared for this, good brother. You are lonely, you will stand alone. Nobody (so you will think) understands the crisis you find yourself in.

This is good. Before a pilot is trusted with large commercial aircraft, he must succeed in a series of solo flights.

Before you can qualify as one of the great Brotherhood of / Light, you too must learn to take your life in your hands and mould it until it responds with perfect obedience. When that happens, your suffocating sense of desolation will be replaced by the companionship of the Brotherhood; which in its turn will lead to the warmth and protection of your Father. (Mike Swain to his father, Jasper, FMW, 88-9.)

The ultimate goal of this Path is reunion with God Eternal, not the complete annihilation of yourself. It is akin to a drop of water placed in the ocean. It merges with the whole of that ocean and yet it still retains its independence; you can always take that drop out of the ocean again. (Mike Swain, FMW, 89.)

This intense loneliness is only the necessary separation of you from the meaningless ebb and flow of mortal life. As you progress along the Path, you will learn how to blend yourself into your surroundings. From that moment on, you will never again be lonely.

But at this stage, good brother, loneliness is essential to your development. Accept it with good cheer because it is living proof that you have risen above the confines of the common herd. That alone is enough to make you feel you now live in an empty void. (Mike Swain to his father, Jasper, 89.)

Social Issues

Earth’s Primary Predicaments

You must understand that the problems we have in government are really the problems of human nature itself. They are one and the same, and this soon becomes obvious to any real student of history. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 232.)

The difference between your side and this side is chiefly in this – there is more love here, as there is more sunshine in summer than in winter. If there were but more love in your world it would be even as ours; for to you also would be given the Vision of God. (Julia Ames, AD, 147.)

The worst of your world is the want of love. If there were love where there is hatred or indifference, earth would become Heaven. (Julia Ames, AD, 147.)

If you did but possess your Soul and exercise its powers, death or separation in this world would cease to exist for you and the miseries which haunt the human race would disappear.

For the whole of the evils that afflict society arise from the lack of seeing things from the standpoint of the Soul. If you lived for the Soul, cared for what made the Soul a more living reality, and less for the meat and drink and paraphernalia of the body, the whole world would be transfigured. (Julia Ames, AD, 142-3.)

It is the things which are eternal and the things invisible which alone are of value. And my object is to urge you to concentrate life in the body on the objects that will last after you reach this side and not on those which cease to profit after death. (Julia Ames, AD, 154.)

Rest your heart in God and do not be afraid. (John Heslop, SABL,128.)

You know by your own experience that, when the trial has come, you have always received the needed strength. (John Heslop, SABL, 129.)

Oh, that people would realize the vast importance of directing their minds so that they form a channel through which this glorious power can flow! Surely they cannot understand what they are doing when they clog their faculties with earthly pursuits and pleasures so that no gleam of Divine grace can penetrate. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 134.)

The hope of the world in this time of trouble is in spiritualizing all forms of activity. Love and service; service and love. These must be the watchwords if the world is to come into lasting peace. We are trying to influence a world that is going astray and might cause undreamed-of suffering. We are trying to overcome the thought of materialists and to bring a spiritual outlook into the earthly life. We need the help of all on earth who can think in spiritual terms.

The great battle to be fought now is between the spiritual and the material, between idealism and carnalism. I have received instructions from the higher powers to call all who will to help. You can help by giving the world our thought, and I am asking that you help because the battle will be long and the victory far away. (Unnamed spirit communicator to Charlotte Dresser, SWSL, 8.)

If man made the best of the earth-sphere, there need be no unhappiness and little pain, except occasionally through accident or germs. (Philip Gilbert in PTS, 37.)

On Race

We are all parts of the Great White Spirit. Some He has painted red, some black, some yellow, and some He has not painted at all, but all these colours are part of His scheme.

Some day His laws will come into your world and harmony will come when the colours mix together and live together with love in their hearts. You do not understand what these colours mean. Each has a great purpose and contributes to the laws of life.

There will not be any peace in your world until all these colours blend together, until men learn not to look at the skins, but at the souls that are behind them. (Silver Birch, TSB, 49.)

We have learned how the people of other races can bring / into the pool that which is special to them. Out of that comes what is best for the whole. Your world does not understand yet that the man who has a yellow skin has something which can help the rest of the world and the white man also has something distinctive which would be of assistance to the others. (Silver Birch, TSB, 49-50.)

On Service

It does not matter which way you do it, or who you help, or where you bring light into darkness, so long as you raise up those who have fallen down, give strength to those who are weak, bring light where there is darkness, give food to those who are hungry and sleep to those who have nowhere to lay their heads. (Silver Birch, TSB, 50.)

That power of the spirit ignores all earthly distinctions and cares not for rank or title, grade of society, colour, race, / nationality or class. It recognizes only those who can respond, wherever they may be, whoever they may be, and fills them with the power which cometh from the Source of all Truth, illumines their minds, stimulates their souls and makes them workers in the great vineyeard. (Silver Birch, TSB, 50-1.)

The Union of Philanthropy and Philosophy Make the Perfect Man

The true philanthropist, the man who has the benefit and progress of his fellows most at heart, is the true man, the true child of the Almighty Father, who is the great Philanthropist. The true philanthropist is he who grows likest to God every hour. He is enlarging by constant exercise the sympathies which are eternal and undying, and in the perpetual exercise of which man finds increasing happiness.

The philanthropist and the philosopher, the man who loves mankind, and the man who loves knowledge for its own sake, these are God’s jewels of priceless value, and of boundless promise. The one, fettered by no restrictions of race or place, of creed or name, embraces in his loving heart the whole brotherhood of humanity. He loves them as friends, as brethren. He asks not what are their opinions, he only sees their wants, and in ministering to them progressive knowledge he is blest. This is the true philanthropist, though frequently the counterfeit, who loves those who think with him, and will help those who fawn on him, and give alms, so the generous deed be well known, robs the fair name of philanthropy of that all embracing beneficence which is the true mark.

The other, the philosopher, hampered by no theories of what ought to be, and what therefore must be— bound by no subservience to sectarian opinion, to the dogmas of a special school, free from prejudice, receptive of truth, whatever that truth may be, so it be proven—he seeks into the mysteries of Divine wisdom, and, searching, finds his happiness. He need have no fear of exhausting the treasures, they are without end. His joy throughout life shall be to gather ever richer stores of knowledge, truer ideas of God. The union of those two—the philanthropist and the philosopher—makes the perfect man. Those who unite the two, progress further than spirits who progress alone. Living Longer

Q: With the advances in medical science, we are living longer and this trends seems to be a continuing one. Is God allowing us to live longer lives for some specific reason?

A: Yes, He is. By living longer lives, experiencing more generation changes, learning through error, people will open up more and make changes for the good of mankind. A longer lifetime allows a wider view of the world. By people living longer now, they have the opportunity to incorporate more wisdom and knowledge of having lived through many changes and growth cycles. Hopefully, these people can give more to help mankind than those who are younger. It is an opportunity for them.

Q: Will man’s lifespan keep elongating for this reason?

A: Yes, it will for some time. After that, if mankind is living a life that is constructive, he’ll no longer have to live beyond one hundred years. Man now frequently lives to eighty years, which represents two incarnations in earlier days when many died at age forty. The longer the lifespan, the greater the opportunity to gain wisdom and growth. (Unnamed spirit teacher speaking through Betty Bethards, TIND, 56.)

Modern Culture is Hollow and Debilitating

Blatant hedonism, blatant emotionalism and blatant immaturity are the disease germs of [American] culture. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 25-6.)

Too often … American culture doesn’t encourage people to grow up beyond the mental age of sixteen. Of course, there are a lot of sixty or seventy-year-olds walking around who have never grown up beyond the mental age of four. The whole culture is going to be taken to task for this one of these days. This is a warning: the bills are going to be called due by Cosmic Order. Your culture will have to account for its deficiencies. I’m very serious – this is something that’s going to happen. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 23.)

Reading carefully is a very important step to inner awareness. Most people don’t wake the trouble even to read simple things carefully. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 20.)

Perhaps on earth you work too much—more than is really necessary. The mass of needless things that you accumulate round you, the artificial wants that you create, the break-neck pace of your lives to provide all these things, seem to us absurd and rather pitiful. Your political economy is mere child’s play, your governments are cumbrous machines for doing the unnecessary, most of your work is useless, and your lives would be nearly futile if you did not suffer so much that your souls learn, though unwillingly, that most of their strivings are vain.

How I used to sweat and groan in the early days [on Earth] to make my little circle in the sand! And now I see that if I had taken more time to think, I might have recovered something of my past knowledge, gained in other lives; and though I still had felt obliged to draw my circle in the sand, I might have done it with less difficulty and in half the time. (Judge David P. Hatch, LLDM, Letter XXV.)

The interesting thing about television – and we do watch these trends from up here – is that it started out as an entertainment medium and has slide, over the years, into a role as a pacifying mechanism. Even the humor on television tends to dull the mind, instead of lighten things up. This is not good. In the early years of television, there was creativity and exploration, especially in the realm of humor. But that is largely gone now. (Will Rogers in MTR, 59.)

The problem with television is not the censorship. The problem lies in the fact that the programmers strive very diligently to reach a level of banality which is acceptable to the viewers. (Laughter.) As a result, creative people are not given the license and encouragement to experiment with new ideas. The only type of programming that can survive is that which pacifies – which, of course, is virtually worthless. The test of a good show is that it makes the audience feel better about themselves. From this perspective, I would say that the majority of television shows fail miserably. (Will Rogers in MTR, 59.)

What’s necessary is a total restructuring of the creative environment which produces television shows. (Will Rogers in MTR, 60.)

Wonderful though man measures his material achievements, spiritually he is still very puny. Oh, that the achievements of the spirit could match the achievements of matter, that progress could be made in fields of the mind and spirit that are comparable with the advance that has been made in certain fields of material endeavour! (Silver Birch, GSB, 21.)

You tell of your progress of knowledge, in art and science, in culture and refinement. You boast of your civilisation, and are at pains to send to far-distant peoples the religion which adorns and elevates your own country. Nay, you even force it on them as that Divinely-given panacea for human ills of which you are the favoured recipients. It would be well that you should keep silence over the fruits which religion and civilisation between them have produced among you. …

Your religion … is a degenerate offspring of that simple and pure faith which alone deserves the name of Christianity. … Your civilisation and culture … are but of the surface, and do but faintly hide festering sores, all too plain to spirit-gaze, while in their ultimate effect upon the nature they are too frequently demoralising to the truest and noblest instincts, and productive of hollowness, deceit, and selfishness.

The Arab of the desert, the Indian of the far west, in whom nature’s instincts have not been dwarfed, distorted, paralysed by civilisation, is frequently a nobler man than the crafty trader, who thinks it clever to outwit and overreach, or than that baser product of civilised life from whose foul tongue no character is safe, and whose lustful, sensual life marks none as sacred from attack.

Foul, weltering masses of vice and cruelty, and selfishness, and heartlessness, and misery that your great cities are! In them the spirit is starved and crushed; dwelling in an atmosphere through which life-giving influence can hardly penetrate, it groans in agony as it aspires to a purer and serener air; but its groans ascend hardly above the pall of darkness that hovers round. The aspirations are crushed out by reiterated temptation; good resolves are stolen away by the adversaries nigh at hand, and the spirit cares less and less to struggle against the efforts of its foes.

These are only too well seconded by the recklessness and folly which offer a premium to vice, and make virtue well-nigh impossible. And even when the body is removed from those dens of impurity, sensuality, and woe, which are tenanted by so many of your fellows even within reach of your own homes, where riches secure exemption from bodily distress, what is the result? We do but see gross vice, shameless physical surroundings, open degradation of soul and body, but we breathe an atmosphere scarcely less spiritually bad.

Money-hunting is the business of life, and pleasure is too often found in bodily gratification and sensuous enjoyment. The air is thick with the greed of gold, with lust of power, with self-seeking in all its myriad forms. The spirit—do you ever think what is the state of such a spirit? It has no food, no development, no occupation. It is dwarfed, or compelled to occupy itself in concerns which drag it back, and give the adversaries their best chance of fostering and inflaming passions and desires which are to us detestable. Hardly can we reach these more than the debased, where in crowded alleys and lanes vice has its home—where in the thronged exchanges and marts money rules supreme, and breeds its progeny of selfishness and greed, and larceny—there the adversaries have their centres of action, from which their baleful influences radiates.

But you know it not. You are ignorant in respect of the world of causes, and foolish in respect of what you do in your world in providing conditions favourable to crime and sin. Your ignorance perpetuates these conditions, and renders it more hard for us to impress upon you the true principles which should govern the origination and development of life upon your globe and the cultivation of spiritual progress. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 160.)

Nineteen centuries have passed since the pure and refined teachings which you profess to treasure were spoken amongst men; and you are but little better in all that makes for true progress, but little wiser in real wisdom, but little advanced in pure religion; nay, you are worse than the Essenes, amongst whom Jesus lived and was trained. You are the Scribes and Pharisees, who drew from Him his bitterest denunciations. And you know it not. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 161.)

In matters of body and spirit—matters of vital import that touch both the life here and the life hereafter—you have well-nigh all to learn. These are some of the adversaries of whom we have told you aforetime. They are massed in force, ever ready to thwart, and vex, and injure us. Their ranks are being perpetually swelled by spirits debased and degraded by human ignorance. In all that we have said we have made no account of those who strive to do for their race and for its development what in them lies. We have said nothing of the acts of self-sacrifice and devotion, the simple noble lives, the generous acts that redeem your race, and make us hopeful of its future.

Our business now is to paint the dark side of the picture: and we have so drawn it as best to attract your attention to it. We earnestly warn you that its lineaments are sketched with the pencil of truth; and we warn you in all solemnity that the great truth which underlies this message, viz. the antagonism between good and evil, and the fostering of evil by human folly and ignorance, is one which vitally concerns you and us in the future of the work which we have in charge. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST,161 .)

Organ Donation

Q: Is there any spiritual growth to be gained in willing your body or parts of your body to others before death?

A: There is an advantage in that you show selflessness in giving this gift to others in order that they might prolong their natural life to accomplish more gains. It is also the structure of mankind to constantly try to improve upon himself and upon the life cycle and this is something which then gives men the opportunity to understand the workings of the physical body. It is a beautiful act to help others in this way. (Unnamed spirit teacher speaking through Betty Bethards, TIND, 55-6.)

Astral Clutter

The astral plane was a good deal cleaner [in my day] than it is at present. … [That is so for] several reasons. First of all, the general public is less restrained and more emotional than in my time. There is more emphasis on expressing feelings, especially uncomfortable ones. All of this happens on the astral plane. And, as you know, physical people contribute to the quality of the astral every bit as much as those who have passed on. So the emotionalism in the world today has become a serious problem.

Another contributing factor is the tremendous growth of public interest in psychic phenomena and magical practices. … As a result, some groups actually lust for psychic experiences, without regard for their type of quality. This psychic lust energizes all kinds of low-quality astral phenomena.

[These are] not as disturbing as another of your modern phenomena – the growth of mass communications such as television, radio, movies, and the like. There are many good qualities in all of these media, but the public seems to be attracted most strongly to the elements that are shocking, morbid, titillating, and disgusting. … The typical public reaction to these forms of entertainment – and sometimes even to what is presented as news – has been perhaps the greatest contributing factor to astral clutter. (Sir Oliver Lodge, SOLR, 35-6.)

People are almost automatically reflecting into the astral the ugliness around them. This can be seen, for example, in the recent fascination with disaster movies. As people watch these films, their emotional reactions become mirrors of the shocking and destructive themes and images in the movies themselves. As these reactions accumulate, they become virtually a tidal wave of disaster on the astral plane. … And your mass media has made awareness of tragic and shocking events, whether real or fictional, much more accessible to the general public than in my day. (Sir Oliver Lodge, SOLR, 36.)

When you have millions of people feeding themselves on modern jazz and rock and roll, which are more violence and lust set to sound than they are genuine music, the astral problem that results influences not only the perceptions of psychics, but the feelings of ordinary people as well. (Sir Oliver Lodge, SOLR, 37.)

Treatment of Criminals

You are blind and ignorant in your dealings with those who have offended against your laws and the regulations, moral and restrictive, by which you govern intercourse amongst yourselves. You find a low and debased intelligence offending against morality, or against constituted law. Straightway you take the readiest means of aggravating his capacity for mischief. Instead of separating such one from evil influence, removing him from association with sin, and isolating him under the educating influence of true purity and spirituality, where the more refined intelligences may gradually operate and counteract the baleful power of evil and evil manifestations, you place him in the midst of evil associations, in company with offenders like himself, where the very atmosphere is heavy with evil, where the hordes of the undeveloped and unprogressed spirits most do congregate, and where, both from human associates and spirit influence, the whole tendency is evil. Vain and short-sighted and ignorant folly!

Into your dens of criminals we cannot enter. The missionary spirits pause and find their mission vain. The good angels weep to find an associated band of evil— human and spiritual—massed against them by man’s ignorance and folly. What wonder that you have gathered from such experience the conviction that a tendency to open crime is seldom cured, seeing that you yourselves are the plainest accomplices of the spirits who gloat over the fall of the offender.

How many an erring soul—erring through ignorance, as frequently as through choice — has come forth from your jails hardened and attended by evil guides you know not, and can never know! But were you to pursue an enlightened plan with your offenders, you would find a perceptible gain, and confer blessing incalculable on the misguided and vicious. You should teach your criminals; you should punish them, as they will be punished here, by showing them how they hurt themselves by their sin, and how they retard their future progress. You should place them where advanced and earnest spirits among you may lead them to unlearn their sin, and to drink in wisdom: where the Bands of the Blessed may aid their efforts, and the spirits of the higher spheres may shed on them their benign and elevating influence.

But you horde together, your dangerous spirits. You shut them up, and confine them as those who are beyond hope. You punish them vindictively, cruelly, foolishly: and the man who has been the victim of your ignorant treatment pursues his course foolish, suicidal sin, until in the end you add to the list of your foolish deeds this last and worst of all, that you cut him off, debased, degraded, sensual, ignorant, mad with rage and hate, thirsting for vengeance on his fellows: you remove from him the great bar on his passions, and send him into spirit-life to work out without hindrance the devilish suggestions of his inflamed passions.

Blind! Blind! You know not what you do. You are your own worst enemies, the truest friends of those who fight against God, and us, and you. Ignorant no less than blind! For you spend vast trouble to aid your foes. You cut from a spirit its bodily life. You punish vengefully the erring. You falsely arrogate to yourselves the right law divine to shed human blood. You err, and know not that the spirits you so hurt shall in their turn avenge themselves upon you. You have yet to learn the earliest principles of that Divine tenderness and pity which labours ever through us to rescue the debased spirit, to raise it from the depths of sin and passion, and to elevate it to purity and progress in goodness. You know naught of God when you do such deeds.

You have framed for yourselves a God whose acts accord with your own instincts. You have fabled that He sits on high, careless of His creatures, and jealous only of His own power and honour. You have fabricated a monster who delights to harm, and kill, and torture: a God who rejoices in inflicting punishment bitter, unending, unmitigable. You have imagined such a God, and have put into His mouth words which He never knew, and laws which His loving heart would disown. God - our God - Good, Loving, Tender, Pitiful - delighting in punishing with cruel hand His ignorantly-erring sons!

Base fable! Base and foolish fancy, produced of man’s cruel heart, of man’s rude and undeveloped mind. There is no such God! There is none. He has no place with us: none, save in man’s degraded mind. Great Father! Reveal Thyself to these blind wanderers, and teach them of Thyself. Tell them that they dream bad dreams of Thee, that they know Thee not, nor can know till they unlearn their ignorant conceptions of Thy Nature and Thy Love.

Yes, friend, your jails and your legalised murder, the whole tenor of your dealings with criminals, are based on error and ignorance. Your wars and your wholesale murderings are even more fearful. You settle your differences with your neighbours, who should be your friends, by arraying against each other masses of spirits—we see not the body; we care only for the spirit temporarily clothed with those human atoms—and those spirits you excite to full pitch of rage and fury, and so you launch them, rudely severed from their earth-bodies, into spirit life. You inflame their passions, and give them full vent.

Vengeful, debased, cruel, earth-bound spirits throng around your earth-sphere, and incite the debased who are still in the body to deeds of cruelty and lust and sin. And this for the satisfying of ambition, for a passing fancy, for an idle princely whim, for lack of something else to occupy a king.

Ah! friend, you have much, very much to learn: and you will learn it by the sad and bitter experience of undoing here-after that which you have now done. You must learn the golden lesson, that Pity and Love are truer wisdom than vengeance and vindictive punishment; that were the Great God to deal with us as you deal with your fellows, and as you have falsely fabled that He will, you would be justly sent to your own imagined hell.

You must know of God, and of us, and of yourselves, ere you can progress and do our work instead of our adversaries’. Friend, when others seek from you as to the usefulness of our message, and the benefit which it can confer on those to whom the Father sends it, tell them that it is a Gospel which will reveal a God of tenderness and pity and love, instead of a fabled creation of harshness, cruelty, and passion. Tell them that it will lead them to know of Intelligences whose whole life is one of love and mercy and pity and helpful aid to man, combined with adoration of the Supreme. Tell them that it will lead man to see his own folly, to unlearn his fancied theories, to learn how to cultivate his intelligence that it may progress, to use his opportunities that they may profit him, to serve his fellow-men, so that when they and he meet in the hereafter, they may not be able to reproach him that he has been, so far as he could, a clog and an injury to them.

Tell them that such is our glorious mission; and if they sneer, as the ignorant will, and boast of their fancied knowledge, turn to the progressive souls who will receive the teaching of wisdom: speak to them the message of Divine truth that shall regenerate and elevate the world: and for the blind ones, pray that when their eyes are opened, they may not despair at the sight which they shall see. (Spirit leader Imperator, said to be the prophet Malachi, in Moses, ST, 29-31.)

Treatment of the Mentally-Insane

Much there is in social knowledge and in the conduct of State affairs that you must unlearn: much that is to be added to your knowledge.

For instance, you legislate for the masses, but you deal only with the offender. Your legislation must be punitive, but it should be remedial too. Those whom you think insane you shut up fast lest they should injure others. A few years ago, and you tortured them, and filled your madhouses with many whose only crime it was to differ from the foolish notions of their fellows, or to be—as many were, and are, whom you have thought mad—recipients of undeveloped spirit influence. This you will one day know to your sorrow—that to leave the beaten track is not always evidence of a wandering mind; and to be the vehicle of spirit-teaching is not proof of a mind unhinged. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 32.)

Political Issues

Bringing about Political Progress

It is up to that relatively small segment of society to recognize that it is their goodwill, their idealism, and their leadership which must be the source of this transformation. It is up to a few people to promote and foster the concepts of goodwill, brotherhood, tolerance, fairness, cooperation and being a good neighbor. Not everyone has the opportunity to be influential on a worldwide basis, but every single man and woman of goodwill does have the opportunity to promote and foster these ideals in their neighborhoods, communities, businesses, or professions. And, if the seeds can be sown at those levels, they will take root and spread on a national and international scale.

That answer may sound vague and unworkable, but it is how society evolves. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 232.)

A legitimate sign of progress might be an internal upheaval in a country that has abused human rights and freedom for a long time. That would be a sign that tyrants of that country are no longer able to get away with as much as they have been. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 233.)

The way in which a society treats its heroes and heroines is virtually an index to the health of that society. … To me, a hero is someone who makes a lasting and enduring contribution to civilization – a contribution which enriches life and helps people aspire to something better. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 242.)

Right now, we have an international climate of selfishness, where countries are more interested in preserving their own advantages and gaining new ones than they are in cooperating with one another toward common goals. This is true even among friendly nations. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 230.)

A hundred years ago, perhaps even seventy-five, the nations of the world could afford to be independent of one another to a large degree; they could be isolated. We can’t do that nowadays. For the economy and the technical growth of civilization to unfold properly, there must be an unselfish sharing of economic resources, natural resources, and scientific knowledge. No one can afford to remain isolated and uncooperative.

Personally, however, I am rather pessimistic about this happening. One can speak idealistically, and talk about what is possible and what is necessary – and it is practical for this generation to achieve this type of cooperation – but one must also be realistic. Do I see it happening? No. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 231.)

The cooperation I am speaking of would bind together common needs and interests of nations all over the planet.

This would not be some kind of “United States of the World,” with a global parliament or senate and a super prime minister who was chief executive of it all. That kind of governmental structure for the world is out of the question for a very long time to come. In fact, it would be unwieldy and unworkable in anything but a world populated by saints – and, if you had that, you wouldn’t need the trappings of government. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 230.)

Homogenizing the world community of nations is quite undesirable because the different societies and countries of the earth are at different stages of evolution, as you well know. They serve different purposes and therefore have different needs, resources, capacities and cultures. For a long, long time to come, there will be a need for separate countries with distinct identities and cultures. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 229.)

The ultimate solution, I’m afraid, is thousands of years in the future. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 232.)

It is very difficult to impose freedom militarily. Philosophically, it is hard to defend the invasion of another country in the name of freedom, even if the people of that country are being suppressed by a system of government which does not permit human freedom. Over the next few centuries, therefore, the world is going to become much more aware that freedom has to be established from within. It cannot be imposed from without. Those who have free governments cannot expect to impose a democratic system on a people. … Freedom can be taken away by force, even if it cannot be given by force. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 248.) There is a… a kind of miniature hierarchy of very enlightened people in spirit who seek to guide the government in an enlightened way. This is where the mystical fellowship of men and women of goodwill genuinely has its existence. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 244.)

We spirits are not a democracy but a hierarchy – an ordered grade of beings, ascending beyond our capacity even here to follow its upward ranges. But there is no injustice. Each occupies / its position by reason of capacity and fitness. Democracy on earth will fail unless it becomes a brotherhood [of] older and younger brothers. (Philemon [Archdeacon Wilberforce] in LFOS, 28.)

Place of Political Satire

It’s very easy to become isolated and get out of touch. Human beings who are the center of a lot of power are generally pampered and lose touch with their humanity to some degree, no matter how much of an attempt is made not to let that happen. It is the nature of power. Power is protected and so there has to be a way to get through to the power centers and help them remember that they are human just like the rest of us. No one is greater than human and no one is less than human; we are all trying to cope in the same world.

That’s why I say there is no substitute for good political satire. (Will Rogers in MTR, 54.)

Patriotism Still Holds

Patriotism still holds with me, as with most of us, and will continue to hold so long as I have personal ties upon earth. When there are no longer any of these personal ties remaining, my interests will gradually and naturally turn more exclusively to this side among my own people, and my place will be filled by another—and so the race goes on—always moving forward, progressing and evolving. (W.T. Stead, BI, 138.)

You know, my child, we do not lose our nationality or our love for the old country when we come over here. (Mother of F. Heslop in FMABL, 87.)

Patriotic Interpretations of War

Philanthropy for its own sake has not been an outstanding characteristic of Poles, Russians, etc., whereas in the British Empire and U.S.A., this spirit of social responsibility is definitely developing. That’s why we won the war, because of the power of the creative Force, which works as always to dispel the vacuum which is negation.

Whatever our weaknesses, greed, and folly, we were fighting for ‘right’ against ‘wrong,’ but because of the considerable proportion of ‘wrong’ in us, the fight was not easy – it cost us ‘blood and tears.’ (Philip to his mother, Alice Gilbert, in PTW, 235-6.)

Civilization

Civilization is the product of mankind’s continuing effort to bring heaven to earth. It is the product of the collective effort of the spirits of all humanity as they interact with the environment of the earth. In your teachings and writings, you tell people that the individual personality is the product of an interaction between his spirit and his environment. Well, civilization is the product of the same kind of interaction on a collective level. It is really the creative self-expression of the whole of mankind.

That which enriches and sustains and organizes civilization is the capacity to bring heaven to earth, through our social institutions and our art, certain themes which preserve and protect the life of our wisdom, our knowledge, our science, and our philosophy; the life of our compassion, our goodwill, our kindness, our affection, and our charity; and the life of our joy and delight and beauty. (Rembrandt, RR, 36.)

In the holy scriptures it says: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Good artists play a very important role in perceiving, translating, and revealing the vision civilization needs so that it does not perish. There are others who do this too; I won’t be so bold as to say that we’re the only ones. But the work of artists is very important to civilization, and I’m quite serious about this. I will be bold enough to say that a civilization cannot and will not survive unless the artists of that civilization are able to flourish. Artists keep alive human creativity and innovativeness. They are a channel along which new inspiration, beauty, and life can enter a culture. (Rembrandt, RR, 35.)

Problems in Times Past

Obstacles! You know not what [obstacles] are compared with what we have had to endure in times past. Had you lived on earth in the later days of Rome’s imperial sway, when everything spiritual had fled in horror from a realm steeped in debauchery, sensuality, and all that is base and bad, you would have known then what the banded powers of darkness can effect. The coldness was the coldness of despair: the darkness was the gloom of the sepulchre.

The body, the body was all: and the guardians fled in dismay from a scene on which they could not gaze, and whose pangs they could not alleviate. Faithlessness there was indeed, and worse. The world scorned us and our efforts, laughed at all virtue, derided the Supreme, mocked at immortality, and lived but to eat and drink and wallow in the mire—the degraded, down-stricken animals they had made themselves. Ah, yes! Say not that evil is invincible when the power of God and of His Spirits has prevailed to cleanse even such a sink as that. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 24.)

Reports of a New Age

Earth is ending – or nearing the end - of a cosmic day which in this case synchronizes with the end of an Age and the entrance into the Aquarian Age. Such times are always times of great distress and unawareness. (Sir Ronald Fraser in AL, 175.)

There are so many new forces about to be unleashed that we all long to warn you. Conserve your mental and physical energy. It will be needed. (Sir Ronald Fraser in AL, 175.)

Angelic beings assist at the birth and development of these new worlds. They build up the conditions necessary for the ultimate production of life, though this process may take millions of years. At first the lowest forms only are produced. Gradually they rise in capacity till the world is ready for the highest intelligences.

It was so in your world and the angels are still working, as they have been since its inception. Recently they have begun a further and higher work. As a race you will rise, till in very truth it will become for you a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 136-7.)

You are now in the midst of the crisis. As always happens before there is a birth, there is much pain. The birth of the new order means much pain. Even when the new order comes, there will be growing pains.

But there has been planted in your world a seed that will grow and the efforts of those in high places to destroy the seed will fail. It was said, a long time ago, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” That is going to happen.

There will be many big changes. There will be break-ups and there will be many upheavals. There will be what you think is darkness and difficulty. You will say, “Things are worse.” But, all the time, there is behind it all a power which is making for the progress of the world.

There are many of us who have been allowed by those who are higher and above us to see your world as it will be one day. That conception we try to transmit to those who are receptive, to inspire them to go on with their w0rk. The pictures I have seen make your present world more ugly than it is. I see what it could be like – and what it must be like. It is only a question of time.

One day, there will arise a new race that will recognize that all politics, religion, science and knowledge are part of one thing. Then pain, sorrow, fear, mourning and unhappiness will be banished and your world will be a place of smiles and happy laughter. …

You have tried to build a world where, when one man has something, instead of using it to help the others, he tries to keep it for himself, with the result that in time he makes a system that must collapse because its foundations are wrong.

When you have people who develop their gifts, which all come from the Great Spirit, and use them for the benefit of all the others, then there will be built a system founded on that which is eternal. (Silver Birch, TSB, 42-3.)

I do not care by what name you call the dawn of the new world, but it is the world of the Great Spirit coming into fulfillment, accompanied by His power, and the service of all faithful hearts who seek but to bring new joy, new life, new happiness into the world of matter, so that there shall cease coming into our world the wrecks of yours. (Silver Birch, TSB, 44.)

The New Age of Aquarius [is] now dawning on the world. …

Yet, even as indeed we may be the Elder Brethren of your human race, and able to view the present trauma of your planet with detachment, still our duty and our joy is to release to your worlds some ray of that Divine Purpose by which all creation moves to its ascendancy.

Such a moment in the plan for your cosmos is now immanent. These powerful vibrations of truth will make ingress into man’s mind and heart as the Living Water of the Aquarian Age is poured out upon all mankind, in the centuries when, following these tribulations of retribution for past cruelties, remorse for lost opportunities, and the dismal errors of the substitution of temporal power and affluence for Spiritual Grace, have been purged from all nations. (Spirit teacher called “Elder Brother” in Helen Greaves, LW, 117.)

Oh, Closed Minds, open to the revelation of the Divine Law! Fulfil the teachings of the Great Ones; accept the Living Water of Truth into your minds in preparation for the New Age of the revelation of the Spirit! (Spirit teacher called “Elder Brother” in Helen Greaves, LW, 117.)

The time is coming, and coming fast, when there will be a reconstruction of the religion of the churches. Creeds will largely go, and love and service take their place. (Spirit Control Mary Bosworth to Charlotte E. Dresser, LHH, 87.)

We are a band of workers and wish to add our knowledge. We wait not only in hope, but in certainty; for we go far and near and see all sides of the work among many people and many nationalities. There is a slow dawning of a great day. It is coming, coming surely; and we can watch it from afar. (Unnamed spirit in LHH, 84.)

What they tell me on all sides, and especially my dear guides, is that the time is come when there is to be a great spiritual awakening among the nations and that the agency which is to bring this about is the sudden and conclusive demonstration, in every individual case which seeks for it, of the reality of the spirit, of the permanence of the soul, and the immanence of the Divine. (Julia Ames, AD, 49.)

Do you understand how different life would be there if all would try to give as well as to receive; if all would learn to serve unselfishly the world in which they live, and learn the higher happiness of spiritual thought and life? The coming of the new age is not for one or for two to bring in, but rather the mighty influence from here moving through the spiritually discerning ones there. (Unnamed spirit communicator to Charlotte Dresser, SWSL, 9.)

Ye know not how great is the work that is being done; how vast the vista that is being opened. Never before has there been such an outpouring of Divine Love as now. Silent influences are at work in men’s minds. All over the world they are being prepared to receive the teaching we are giving you here. Should it be necessary for the furtherance of this mission other great Intelligences will return, and bring their magnetic force to bear upon the earth.

At present it is not needed, as the work is progressing. You are living in one of the remarkable epochs of the earth. The old creed must die before the new can be received; but it will die hard, as round it still linger the associations of many ages; but it is fast dying out, never to live again. Happy are ye, living in this age, and learning these new truths, if ye rightly appreciate and use the blessing. (Spirit Teacher Imperator in Moses, MST, 14.)

There is a wedge now being driven in to open the door between the two worlds of matter and spirit, and I love to feel that I may be a tiny splinter of that wedge. / …

At present the earth is enveloped in what looks like a thick grey mist caused by the thoughts of cruelty, rage, grief, and pain that are continually outpouring. (Claude Kelway-Bamber in CB, 23.)

Today, chaos reigns. Chaos in all forms and in international patterns. … But evolution is of the soul. It is a pressing forward to greater heights of spiritual enlightenment and acceptance of the great cosmic love that yearns for expression. (Unnamed Master of the Brotherhood of Light in LFM, 125.)

Every vibration on the earth has been stepped up because you now stand at the threshold of a new era. Men are reaping the harvest of their sowing. Those who have sown violence will reap violence. Those who have sown peace will reap peace. For the harvest must be shared by all mankind; no man standing alone in his guilt, nor in his glory. Each is a fragment of the whole.

Yet, my beloved, all is not lost, for I would reveal to you that within the law is yet a greater law, the law of transmutation. Many are they amongst you who have returned to earth at this time of crisis to enact the law’s fulfillment, as a voluntary service to all their brothers.

Had mankind accepted and understood the teachings of the Master Jesus, the plan for your earth would have taken a vastly different course and the advance to perfection have been achieved with greater speed. However, mankind proceeded, unheedingly, upon a materialistic course, largely losing touch with the spiritual life-line of soul communion with the inner presence.

Thus the harvest of their folly is upon them, but with the crumbling of the material edifice that they have built, the dross will be burnt away and the clear light of truth revealed. This will not be accomplished without suffering, yet, my beloved, much may be accomplished by those amongst / you who have perceived the power of spirit, to turn the tide of disaster. (Unnamed Master of the Brotherhood of Light in LFM, 126-7.)

As you have perceived, there is, in the minds of men on earth, an inner urgency, seeking outlet. In many, it takes strange forms of violence and perversion, alternating with the noblest intentions and ideals. This condition, you will observe, is greatly on the increase today. The perceptions of men are quickened through the outpourings of cosmic power and this power may be used for good or evil. Frequently, both qualities are manifested in the individual, in equal strength.

Only by courage and understanding may men be helped by those of you who have chosen this work. You must raise yourselves above emotion and hold man’s divine essence up to the clear field of cosmic power. It is not enough to direct rays of perfection to earth bodies, for this dense material fog deflects the power and much is lost. Yet divine power is ever invincible. (Unnamed Master of the Brotherhood of Light in LFM, 127.)

Instruments are needed now, as never before in the history of your planet. Indeed, this is a momentous year and marks a beginning and an end of an era of evolution in the cosmic spheres, which will have repercussions, not only on earth, but in many planets and other planes of thought and action far beyond your understanding or imagining. There has been a vast concentration of energy from the cosmic spheres, which has been / brought to a focal point at this time.

A large measure of this energy has been and will be directed to mankind at your stage of evolution, both on your planet and to others in galaxies far removed. This we do not ask you to attempt to understand, for the reasons are beyond your comprehension. But we do ask that you should direct your thoughts upward in seeking for higher levels of attainment and that you should open your hearts and minds to the divine flow of cosmic energy. It is thus that the God Consciousness within you will be awakened to a realization of the encompassing love and compassion of the Divine Spirit and self-realization will be attained.

Tread fearlessly on the path for though thousands may fall to the right and to the left of you, if you will but keep your minds single to the truth, no harm shall come nigh you.

Go forward in confidence, my beloved. Listen to the still small voice within and be guided accordingly. (Unnamed Master of the Brotherhood of Light in LFM, 127-8.)

Reports of New Teachings

Ed. See also Imperator’s teachings of a ”New Revelation”.

There is a new teaching coming out. It’s going to come from fresh sources. This is the nice thing about the differences in generations – fresh sources can come along. So let’s not call it yoga, although I think Alice used that particular term, and I did too. We meant something that is not literally yoga – not Hatha Yoga or Raja Yoga or Kundalini Yoga or any of the specific forms of yoga. It will be a new teaching that is distinctly Aquarian, distinctly western, distinctly new, distinctly open, distinctly clear, distinctly scientific – and I hope distinctly humorous too. (H.P. Blavatsky, BR, 72.)

Reports of the Second Coming of Christ

[Like Fletcher, Arthur Ford’s former spirit control] I must still be oblique about [this subject]. There is at this time, and you have some awareness of this, developing a man who will become the Christ of this age. Many of us who have gotten information on this, and have published material on it, intentionally garbled it to protect the person who is going to do this important work. …

And there will be more of this sort of thing happening, because humanity is vaguely aware that something momentous is about to transpire. The real man I’m talking about is living. He is above the age of reason and can vote and make decisions for himself, but it is not yet time for him to start his ministry. When he does things are going to be difficult enough for him without a lot of prior advertising.

Look now at the people who claim to be Jesus Christ. All you can do is laugh and say, “Oh, God help us!” The man I’m talking about is going to encounter problems of this nature – except that he is going to come in a very unusual way. The events are not going to be similar to the career of Jesus and the start of His ministry. (Arthur Ford, PP, 102-3.)

The reason you’re seeing so many second comings of Jesus, second comings of Buddha, and even the rise of black magic and Satanism is because humanity is vaguely aware that something big is going to happen. When someone says, “Oh, I’m Mary Magdalene” or “I’m Jesus,” this is just a very strange response to genuine impelling forces.

Humanity is tuning in, more or less consciously, to these particular forces coming from within, from the inner planes, at this time. This is one of the reasons why there is such a rise in the interest in psychic phenomena, after all – because we are all making ready for the reappearance of the Christ. Jesus only had one harbinger, but the Christ of the New Age is going to have several million harbingers.

As you know, several of the people who were associated with Jesus during His life have now reincarnated. They don’t advertise it, but these people are genuine. (Arthur Ford, PP, published in 1978, 103-4.)

Whenever there has been an avatar, there has been a lifting of the vibration of the whole human race. You can look for that and much more. The physical plane is rapidly moving into the fourth dimension. Part of the avatar’s work is to raise the consciousness of the planet so that this particular transition can be made. That is the first thing that will happen.

You’re going to be noticing within your lifetimes that some things are not working quite like they used to, and this will be an indication that this transition is happening.

At the same time there will be an increasing awareness of some of the inhabitants of the inner side of life – entities such as elves, angels, and spooks. This will be another indication of what is happening.

The major work of the coming avatar is to lay the foundation for a truly spiritual civilization based on a clarification of ancient wisdom and a new revelation. He will guide us up the next evolutionary step for mankind, which is basically what every avatar comes to do. …

I don’t think he will be working through the framework of traditional Christianity any more than Jesus Christ worked through the traditional framework of Judaism. He will probably have his beginnings there, because that will be the predominant religion of whatever community he is in. However, I’m sure he will go beyond it. We forget that Buddha began in the Hindu religion and broke through the traditional framework for that and created something new, too. (Arthur Ford in PP, 104-5.)

My Beloved, I want to tell you that I am busy with some new work for God., It is not very easy to explain, but it is all connected with the opening of reservoirs of Spiritual Power, which will ultimately flood your world as the waters now cover the channels of the deep.

Many are associated with me in this work and I can best describe it as a gathering up of the pure Essence of Prayer and Love, ever rising heavenward from your earth and these spheres and forging them into bands of “Divine Energy.” Then we direct them as rays of illumination into the prepared hearts of mankind.

Already the effect of our work is becoming evident in the awakening of the people to perceive Spiritual truth. This is, however, only the first … of the outpouring that is to follow.

Homes are being formed in every part of the world, where those who so love the Christ may meet and, by mutual sympathy, strengthen and help one another. At this critical time you are not only fighting against flesh and blood, but against unseen spiritual wickedness, and these enemies of the truth ever seek to draw down those who aspire to show forth the Christ-Spirit in their daily lives.

But do not be afraid of the present conditions of evil and unrest, the Christ is coming, and then everything will fall into its rightful place. The Christ is coming! Let all the earth keep silence before Him!

To those who have attained the Spiritual vision he is already visible and from every part of the world will they greet Him and evil and evil-doers will flee away from the Light of His Presence. Then will He reign upon the earth in Righteousness and Truth. Pray continually that the day of His Coming may be hastened for we here are also working to this end. The joy and glory of that Reign of Peace will far exceed anything you can dimly imagine.

But I cannot tell you how heavy our work is just now; there are so many evil forces around your world, which must be counteracted or transmuted. It is a transition period of vital moment to all those who dwell on earth and to the many planes and spheres which impinge upon it. Legions of Angels are employed to uplift and purify so that the Christ may come and reign in your midst. Keep you faith strong in the Second Coming of the Christ. (John Heslop, FMABL, 82-4.

You must try not to get too depressed about the difficulties that still exist; they will pass away in God’s good time for the Christ’s Reign of Peace is at hand. (Mother to F. Heslop in FMABL, 87.)

My special work on earth just now is in helping to prepare the way for the Coming again of the Christ and His Reign of Peace and Love, for He is coming and you are all helping to make the conditions necessary for His reception.

He is never far from the soul that loves Him and to such He frequently shows Himself. But what you are longing for is – His Visibility to all – so that everyone must see and acknowledge Him. When the time is ripe, that is coming too, for never did the earth so need Him as it does now. This is the “end of the time” spoken of in the New Testament, so pray and pray that these days may be shortened, as we too pray for you here. (“Stella,” FMABL, 112.)

Not only is the Christ coming, but He is actually now in your midst, and here and there are those who see and feel Him and thus know that this is true. Now, those to whom this certainty is given will also be permitted the joy of welcoming the Christ, when His Presence becomes more fully known upon the earth. (J. W. Sharpe, M.A., in FMABL, 134.)

What an honour to assist in preparing the way for His Feet! Rise to this Noble Mission, be worthy of this Great Honour, and, as you dwell upon it, the darkness will flee away and the sunshine from these brighter spheres will flood your soul. (J. W. Sharpe, M.A., in FMABL, 134-5.)

I have before said that I derive my mission, and am influenced in my work, by a spirit who has passed beyond the spheres of work into the higher heaven of contemplation. Jesus Christ is now arranging His plans for the gathering in of His people, for the further revelation of the truth, as well as for the purging away of the erroneous beliefs which have accumulated in the past.

I have heard something of this from other sources. Is this then the return of Christ?

It is the spiritual return. There will be no such physical return as man has dreamed of. This will be the return to His people, by the voice of His Messengers speaking to those whose ears are open; even as He Himself said, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear; he that is able to receive it, let him receive it.”

Is this message coming to many?

Yes, to many it is being made known that God is now specially influencing man at this epoch. We may not say more. (“Imperator” in Moses, ST, 109-10.)

[Stainton Moses] asks about the Second Coming of the Christ.

You must be warned not to attach too great importance to the wording of records which are, in many cases, obscure and erroneous; which record the vague impressions of men who frequently did not understand what was being said to them; which have been badly translated, and which must frequently convey erroneous impressions. With these restrictions, there is much that the Lord Jesus spoke of in the days of His Incarnation which is finding its fulfillment now, especially as regards the general outlook for a new revelation; even as in His own days on earth, and as regards His return to your world.

The return, then, is purely spiritual?

It is. The return of the Lord Jesus to your earth is in process amongst you. He operates by His intermediary agencies; though He Himself may personally come to influence men if it be necessary; but not in the flesh. This is the age of spirit, and the influence is spiritual. The influence is akin to what it was in the days of the Incarnation. /

On the Mount of Transfiguration He talked visibly with those potent spirits through whom the channel of influence had been given; and who have been, and who are, intimately associated with this and all other similar movements. They - Moses and Elias - acting under the commands of the Lord, inspire and direct this movement. You will see then why we have spoken of it as religious.

Armageddon, the mystic conflict between good and evil in the world, is being fought out. And, in your midst, for the eye of faith to see, stands the Risen Christ. It was to prepare His way that we returned and spoke to men. It was to pave the way, not, indeed, for the material manifestation of the arisen Jesus, but for the spiritual return of the Christ that we came to earth.

Learn, friend, that it is not the Jesus of history, but the Christ-principle that is revived among men. Divest your mind of materialistic ideas, and learn the mystic truth.

The return of the Christ, which the world has confounded with the second advent of Jesus, is solely the resurrection and re-development of the principle of which the Christ was the incarnate representation.

It was not the first time, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, that the principle which He represented was manifested among men. In all ages, and among all people, God has taught them of Himself. The popular notion of the coming Messiah took form and shape from the words of ancient prophecy. Here, then, you see the prevalent error as to the method by which it was to be inaugurated. It is the same with you in this present day.

You have the same expectation of a new dispensation; the same misconception as to its real character. The Jew looked for his second Solomon who should regain for him the splendour and prosperity which had departed from him. The Christian looks for his Lord to come in the air, attended by legions of angels, to inaugurate a reign of universal peace and glory in which he hopes to have his full share. As the Jews found it hard to believe that the meek and lowly son of the carpenter was the monarch they desired, so your wise men find it hard to fancy that the truth which is everywhere spoken against is, in very deed, the Gospel of the Risen Christ. The dispensation of the Spirit is being evolved amongst you; the reign of the Comforter; the development of the highest truth that men can know. No open establishment of an earthly kingdom, but the silent setting up of a spiritual one.

The Christ-principle which we declare is that return of the Christ which His followers expect; only it is spiritual, whereas their ideas are earthly and material.

I gather that Jesus Himself has not appeared on earth, but may do so.

Not the man Jesus as He was. He has passed beyond the state when that would be possible.

More as an influence?

Yes, as a spiritual effluence from the higher spheres, temporarily concentrated on you. His work is done by us, who have more power to abide with you. All this strife that surrounds you is the sign of the conflict that attends the new development of Truth. The birth-throes of Truth are ever accompanied by pain and distress.

The little that is projected on the material plane is but the shadow of the real spiritual work which is going on ceaselessly in the domain of spirit. It is there that our operations centre. We labour to throw round you spiritual conditions of harmony and peace. The world of spirit is the world of cause; and what you now deplore is but a faint shadow of the strife that rages in it.

We are passing through an epoch in which great efforts are being made by the adversaries. The powers antagonistic to us vex and harm us and you. Just as great and noble ideas have their inception in the world of spirit, so it is with the disturbing influences which work among you evil and unrest. They are all spiritual. (Spirit teacher, possibly Imperator, possibly not, in Moses, MST, 55-7.)

Christ has passed into the spheres of Contemplation; but He may personally return when our work is completed. But much must be accomplished before the harvest will come, and the time of sowing and growth will be long. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MST, 13-4.)

The Christ has recently returned from the Spheres of Contemplation, and is now specially acting on your world.

Since we last spoke with you a crisis has taken place in the Spheres of Contemplation, and they have now been placed in communication with us. The highest spirits have again undertaken active mission work in your world. Be patient, earnest and prayerful, seeking for the Truth, and ever regarding the army of spirits as the messengers of the Supreme, who are now camped around you. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

We can do so much more with your planet besides just looting and despoiling; and for that reason I am hoping that a moment will soon come when other beings will join you on earth to show and to demonstrate another way of living. I want you to reach out in thought to these greater beings by asking the Christ to bring his Christed ones within the earth vision. This is the plan for which we must prepare. It has been called the Second Coming. But it is not in the least like the original Coming of Christ. This will happen at first slowly, and all over the world people will appear possessing great dynamic force and power.

They will not command. They will keep in step with all of you in all the different walks of life, but slowly, gently, they will impress the love ray, and their gentle influence will be felt and guarded. Take this into your conscious mind and hold yourself alert to meeting, as you may well do, one of these advanced beings. The earth is ripe for this event and there are an increasing number of awakened ones now in the body. See that the number grows and do not lose heart because of the apparent futility of your efforts. (Father Andrew Glazewski in AL, 95.)

Risks to Enlightened Beings of Reincarnting

Even though we are less barbaric than we were two thousand years ago, it is very difficult for enlightened beings to incarnate in the world today. It is quite a risk for them to incarnate. (Paramahansa Yogananda in POG, 126.)

Warnings to Nations

Nations and peoples, like individuals, sooner or later reap what they themselves have sown of good and evil; and knowing this, one realizes that no life, nor the life of any nation, is a succession of disconnected events. There is a sequence running through them all. They fit into each other like the pieces of a puzzle, though one only sees it clearly as a whole when life on earth is over and the last piece has fitted into its place. (Claude Kelway-Bamber in CB, 104.)

They are not new things that we try to teach you. They are the old, old truths that those who have seen with the eyes of spirit have taught you for many, many years. But you have neglected them and so it is necessary to teach them to you once again, to show you that you must learn the lessons of the Great Spirit. You have nearly destroyed your world by the follies of your own ideas.

Your world must get back to the Great Spirit and His laws. It is coming back. Slowly, I can see how the laws of the Great Spirit are coming into fulfillment.

What you must try to learn is that the bounty of the Great Spirit must be properly divided amongst the people. You have people who have too little to eat and you have people with too much to eat. That of course must be wrong. You have to divide the things you have among the people you have. Is not that simple?

You must break down vested interests. The laws are perfect. If you live your own life, seeking only to serve others, then because of that the Great Spirit operates through you. That applies to you and it applies to all. (Silver Birch, TSB, 43.)

Sometimes the higher forces of life work very diligently to fertilize the minds of certain personalities with wonderful new ideas or at least the seed of discovery which, when planted, will lead to a new invention, concept, or practice of benefit to humanity. These higher forces are like the parents of civilization. Now obviously, parents do more than just teach their children what to do. They supervise the play activities of the children and protect them from getting into too much mischief. The parents of civilization do much the same. In my work, some of these entities assisted me in making sure some of my ideas were never perfected – or, if perfected, then never written down.

I might say the same type of supervision still goes on today, especially in such areas of science as nuclear physics, the space program, and laser technology. Certain possible areas of investigation would not be safely explored at this time and so scientists are kept from exploring them and diverted into safer areas. (Nikola Tesla in NTR, 75-6.)

You are apt to think that, because God has singled you out as the leading nation of the earth, He is bound to maintain you in this position. This is not so. His standard must be one of truth, purity, and righteousness. If you fail to bear it aloft, He will take it from you and give it to a nation more worthy than you. (John Heslop to his wife, F. Heslop, SABL, 110.)

You know by your own experience that, when the trial has come, you have always received the needed strength. Now apply this to the nation and it is just as true there. God reigneth. Above all party strife there is the divine hand of power and the divine plan. … Trust in God fully and completely and pray for your native land, that God will bring it out of its present perplexity and deliver it. (John Heslop, SABL, 129.)

There is [today] a strong desire to exclude all reference to spirit as a factor in human existence: to refer all to matter, and crush out all seeking into spirit intercourse and the spirit life is at least impractical, if not unreal and delusive. It is, perhaps, necessary that the temper of your age should take its tone from the peculiar religious epoch through which you are passing. The transition state that intervenes between one form of faith and its successor is necessarily one of convulsion. The old is fading, and the new is not yet clear. Man must pass through this, and it has a tendency to distort his vision. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 153.)

From letters which you have received of late you will be led to see that the times of trouble and distress which we have warned you of are expected by others as well as by us. Be prepared for trouble: it will assuredly come. It is necessary that afflictions come.

Jesus knew and taught that. It is necessary for the training of the soul. It is as necessary as physical discipline for the body. No deep knowledge is to be had without it. None is permitted to scale the glorious heights but after discipline of sorrow. The key of knowledge is in spirit hands, and none may wrest it to himself but the earnest soul which is disciplined by trial. Bear that in mind.

Ease and luxury are the pleasant paths in which the soul lingers and dreams away the summer day. Self-denial, self-sacrifice, self-discipline are the upward tracks, thorn-vexed and rocky, which lead to the heights of knowledge and power. Study the life of Jesus and be wise.

Moreover, the present is a time of hard and bitter conflict between us and our foes. We have told you that you feel the reflex of that struggle. It accompanies every great development of Divine Truth. It is, as it were, the darkness that precedes the dawn: the gloom which is the pre-requisite for growth: the period of trial wherein the earnest soul is purified, “Your hour and the power of darkness,” said Jesus as He agonised in Gethsemane. It is so now: and it will not pass lightly. The cup must be drained.

As each revelation of the Supreme grows old, it is overlaid by man’s errors, and loaded with his inventions. It dies gradually, and loses its hold on men. Bit by bit human error is pared away, unable to stand the shock of criticism, and man’s faith is shaken, and they ask with old Pilate—What is truth? Then comes the answer in the new birth of a higher revelation.

The throes of its birth shake the world, and around its cradle the powers of the Spiritual world contend. Great is the dust and din of the contention. As the light dawns upon the world, and the clouds lift, the watchers, whose eyes are spiritually opened to discern the signs of the times, they who stand on the watch-towers to catch the first gleams, these are ready and welcome with joy the break of day. “Joy comes in the morning.” “Sorrow and sighing flee away.”

The terrors of the night, “the powers of darkness,” are past. But not for all. Full many there will always be for whom no ray of light is visible till the sun has gained his meridian and splendour. They slumber on, heedless of the light that is breaking on the world. Hence the days will never come to your world when all equally will know of the truth. There will always be many for whom it has no charms, for whom it would be fraught with danger to tread the upward paths of progress, and who prefer the beaten track worn by the feet of those who have trod it through the ages past. There will be such always, even as there will be souls who catch the foregleams that / herald the dawn. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 197-8.)

The days come when the adversaries shall be abroad among the children of the light. Heed ye, and be wary and watchful. Keep yourselves separate from the snares of the adversaries.–Warning of Prudens, Doctor, Minister. (Plotinus, Athenodorus and unknown spirit in Moses, MST, 7.)

The open vision is realised; the angels of God ascend and descend between earth and Heaven. The time is at hand when the interrupted vision shall be renewed; when the voice that sounded in the ears of Ezekiel, John the Baptist and John the Seer shall be renewed; when the spheres shall be brought into contact as they never have been since then, and when the Voice of the Almighty, speaking through His intermediary agencies, shall be heard among men. Shall they listen? Nay, as it was of old, so shall it be now. Now, as of old, man’s unbelief bars the purpose of God’s Love. Man’s stubbornness militates against God’s design. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

You are now living in an epoch of great spiritual outpouring, like that which occurred when the Lord Jesus dwelt among men. Even in this present epoch the light may wane, but we do not think so. The hour is at hand when the world of spirit will have far more power over your sphere than at any time of which you are conscious. Much doubt and difficulty will arise from this. Everything on your earth is now (May, 1875) in a disturbed condition, the external evidence of the internal forces of which we are to you the exponents. Unfortunately, the lower powers can counterfeit almost everything we can produce. The human race is morally, mentally and physically diseased, and requires for these diseases long treatment. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Warnings to Nations - Wars

There is still great trouble ahead for humanity. (Philip Gilbert in 1946 in PTS, 39.)

We have been to a big conference! … This conference was not an “astral” affair, it was the real thing – a conference of the leaders and their helpers.

A vast shining building was created specially for the purpose and you and I got there early and stood in the emptiness, seeing the alabaster glistening of the walls which arrived, by just appearing. As we looked, forms, shining with exquisite coloured auras, materialized and seemed to sit. Soon the hall was a shimmer of varied light.

Presently, on a raised dias, a form appeared – a tall old man whose golden aura was so wide and vast that it seemed to encircle us all, in a rich glow of pure gold. From his outstretched hands came rays of this pulsating light, as he addressed us. He did not speak in sound exactly, yet words were conveyed to us in a series of vivid image pictures, blending into our united auras, which seemed to spear-point themselves into a vast receiving station.

We saw mankind in stages of the future. We saw more blood and tears and grief, but the black red glare of cruelty less pronounced, melting into the glow of universal harmony.

We saw a final cataclysm, but concentrated and centred in one lost spot of woe and out of this stench of corruption sprang a lily whose beauty can never be described in words at your command. (Philip Gilbert in PTS, 61-2.)

"The essential parts of the Bible are the ethical teachings and the sacred example of the Christ. The earth needed Christ, and he came. The earth still needs him, and his influence is still here. But many are deaf and blind to this influence, and because this is so, war still desolates the earth and selfishness and crime sometimes blot out the law of unselfishness and love that he gave his life to teach." (Mary Bosworth to Charlotte Dresser, ST, 210.)

The fight is not over. The war against oppression is continuing – and in fact is heating up as we move away from our last major confrontation. The fight continues; the ideals we stand for and have fought for still need to be honored and defended. To my mind, they are the only ideals with living and fighting for, but we are still dealing with those who seek to suppress them. So the fight must go on and we must not give up. It may be a helluva fight, but, in the end the ideals are strong enough to prevail. So we must prevail in our efforts. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 257.)

The cause we fought for in the second world war has not fully triumphed. The world today is faced with essentially the same problem – the suppression of individual freedoms. Certain political schemes which seek to deny these freedoms are still trying to spread themselves throughout the world and control humanity. This has not changed for thousands of years and once again the snake is beginning to rise. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 221.)

(Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 31.)

Wars are but the product of your lust for gain, your ambition, your angry, proud, vengeful passions. And what is the product? God’s fair works destroyed and trampled under foot: the lovely and peaceful results of man’s industry destroyed: the holy ties of home and kindred severed: thousands of families plunged into distress: rivers of blood shed wantonly: souls unnumbered rent from their earth-body to rush unprepared, uneducated, unpurified into the life of spirit. Bad, all bad! earthy! evil sprung from earth, and resulting in misery. Till you know better than this, your race will progress but slowly; but you are perpetually sowing seeds which produces a crop of obstables to our work.

Much there is in social knowledge and in the conduct of State affairs that you must unlearn: much that is to be added to your knowledge. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 32.)

The Spirit-world looks with awe on the near future. War is probable, and everything tends to a great European convulsion. Wars will cease when man is perfect, but that can never be while he is incarnated.

Times of trouble are now at hand. Whenever Truth is manifested, the adversaries range themselves against it. Those who sigh for peace will have reason to sigh, but those who see in the contest between the true and the false the method of striking out the sparks of Divine Truth will not be without good reason for rejoicing.

Meanwhile, you must look for wars and convulsions, for turmoil and distress, and for much that those who consider the Second Advent to be Christ’s return to earth have led you to expect. You live in the last days of this era which is called Christian. Christ is now returning in spirit and in power, bringing the new revelation which should enfranchise the souls of men. (Unnamed Egyptian spirit in Moses, MSTT, n.p.)

In the life of the Christ you will find prophetic utterances which apply to the city in which you dwell [i.e., London], as well as to that over which He wept. He saw not only His own times, but also those in which you are living. His wail over the Jerusalem He loved might be poured forth over those amongst whom your lot is cast. Money is taking the place of God; and in the luxury and idleness that prevail among you are to be found the elements of dissolution. Across the face of your country is now written ‘Ruin.’

Prepare, then, for the final struggle; it will be between good and evil, between faith and agnosticism, between law and order on the one hand and lawlessness on the other. It will be a time of grievous trouble, such as the Christ foretold. Then will the work be attributed to blind force or diabolic agency. Then will be seen among you the ‘sin against the Holy Ghost.’ Blessed are they who remain steadfast, for many will fall away; and for those who have seen the light and have then denied it is no salvation, either in this world or in the world to come.

Now is being fulfilled the prophecy of Christ’s return, as He said: ‘The Comforter shall come.’ That is the permeating influence of His own Spirit, and thus His return is being actually accomplished amongst you. Those who have reached the spheres of blessedness are now operating in your midst. The first effect of this will be increased discord, more active opposition of the adversaries, and a great shaking of the powers now established among you. The outpouring of the Spirit will produce pronounced antagonism and that violent display of bigotry and intolerance which always attends the advent of new Truth. We stand in the midst of two armies of adversaries; those powers of evil which love darkness rather than light, and those incarnated amongst you who regard all that is progressive as something to be shunned. (Unnamed Egyptian spirit Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

The rising generation is being acted upon in a way of which you know but little; centres of spiritual influence are being formed on your earth. On the other hand, the destitution of the human spirit and the powers of the adversaries are sources of constant trouble to us. They are spirits who have developed an antagonism to the progress of all that is good amongst men. The days are coming when there shall be such an outpouring of the Divine Spirit as shall reach to the uttermost corners of the earth, driving the adversaries into open revolt, and bringing home to receptive souls the message of truth for which they are longing. (Unnamed Egyptian spirit in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

The spiritual atmosphere is now much disturbed, and the clouds do not seem to lift. It is from your world that the darkness chiefly comes, and it would appear that trouble is at hand. Men never pass from an inferior state to a superior state without great and intense distress, the throes and agony of a new birth.

You live in an age of dire disturbance. There are hopes in the future, but between now and then there is the shadow of death. In the far future, the listening ear can catch the notes of the angels, and their hymn is the anthem of peace. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, MSTTT, n.p.)

Warnings to Nations - Reassurance

Many young people today are wondering if this planet will survive for very long because of what man is doing to it.

The planet will survive.

Will man?

Yes, man will survive too. There is a limitation placed by natural law on what man can do to the planet on which he lives. He cannot destroy the whole of the planet and all that it contains. (Silver Birch, SBT, n.p.)

The Great Spirit will not allow His children to destroy themselves. (Silver Birch, TSB, 44.)

No man, and no combination of men, have the power to thwart divine will. They can delay, they can harass and they can impede. Infinite wisdom and love rule the universe. These will prevail because that is the law. (Silver Birch, SBT, n.p.)

Gradually [your world] will rid itself of the greed, selfishness, disruption, violence and all that prevents it from being the kingdom of heaven upon earth. (Silver Birch, LSB, 104.)

There is a limitation to what scientists can do. They cannot destroy the whole of your world. The natural laws will ensure the damage that can be done in your world is not so fearful as some people think. Besides, the law of the Great Spirit in the ultimate must prevail. There are no men in your world who can thwart it. They can delay, they can hinder, but they cannot override the Great Spirit.

Those of us who have some insight into the mechanics and the operation of natural law remain confident that, come what may, however foolish people in your world may be, the Great Spirit will prevail. And the Great Spirit’s laws will ensure that more and more love, compassion, charity and service will be exercised in your world.

Science is not infallible. Scientists are only human beings who can make mistakes. I do not worship the god of science. The world will not come to an end, as they say, it will continue. Are you familiar with scientists’ pronouncements that have been wrong? … So there is no guarantee that any scientific pronouncement must automatically be right when it concerns the future. (Silver Birch, SBA, n.p.)

We have destroyed many things which can never return to what they were. This applies to much of what was in the ground and it is a limited place that we inhabit.

But it has tremendous potentialities. There is much to be revealed in your world, much to be discovered. You are not at the end of evolution. You are still in its early stages.

Those who are familiar with the truths of the spirit never despair. Their optimum is based on the knowledge that has been revealed to them. With that knowledge they can have complete faith in the overriding power.

In its long history your world has had many disasters. Man has survived them. Man has progressed in spite of himself. He will continue to evolve because evolution is part of the natural law. And spiritual evolution is part of that same law. (Silver Birch, SBT, n.p.)

The higher authorities who use us as messengers … are the ones who have control of world affairs…. They have the power to stay the hand of evil if it seems that a great disaster might arise. (Gordon Burdick to Grace Rosher in TR, 50.)

I was shown briefly some of the areas set aside for the recovery of earth – as they call it! Ways for destroying pollution and recultivating the earth. These are the plans to give earth a new vibration. You are running out of the present vib, that is your trouble, as well as all the elements that go with it. So another vib or set of vibs is being prepared to take over on earth. This will be quite a new method of living, thinking, and believing. The leader in all this is the Christ. (Sir Alvary Gascoigne in AL, 140.)

I do not think we will ever see fascism recur as it flourished in the Thirties and Forties in Western Europe. (Sir Winston Churchill in POG, 245.)

Some people absolutely froth at the mouth about the possibility of mankind destroying one another or the planet. That will not be allowed to happen. There is danger, to be sure, but the danger is being corrected now, and it will be contained before it gets too far out of hand. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 83.)

The earth as a civilized community will continue to exist in great glory and there is no need to fear awesome destruction. That is not going to happen.

I will drop an odd rock in your pond, to stimulate your curiosity. It could happen, but most likely it won’t. And it’s not up to any specific group, no matter how odd they are, to decide whether it will or whether it won’t. [Laughter.] It has to do with the state of evolution of humanity and civilization. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 57.)

‘Will the world ever come into true Christianity?’

“It will come eventually. Every individual has the power to bring that blessed time a little nearer. The work goes on from here as well as there, and all are needed; for the strife between good and evil grows daily more vicious on the side of evil and needs daily reinforcements on the side of good."

'You believe that final victory will be with the good?'

"I know it will. But there must be greater power both here and there. We see the evil; but not in the hopeless way you see it, for we see also the remedy." (Spirit control Mary Bosworth to Charlotte E. Dresser in SWSL, 138).

Special efforts are being made now to spread a knowledge of progressive truth: efforts by the messengers of God, which are resisted, now as ever, by the hosts of the adversaries. The history of the world has been the story of the struggle between the evil and the good; between God and goodness on the one side, and ignorance, vice, and evil—spiritual, mental, and corporeal—on the other side. At certain times, of which this is one, extraordinary efforts are made.

The army of the messengers of God is massed in greater force: men are influenced: knowledge is spread: and the end draws nigh. Fear for the deserters, the half-hearted, the temporisers, the merely curious. Fear for them: but fear not for the cause of God’s truth. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 24.)

God is giving far more than you think. In all parts are springing up centres from which truth of God is being poured into longing hearts, and permeating thinking minds. There must be many to whom the gospel given of old is satisfying yet, and who are not receptive of further truth. With these we meddle not. But many there are who have learned what the past can teach, and who are thirsting for further knowledge. To these it is given in such measure as the Most High sees fit. And from them it flows to others, and the glorious tidings spread until the day comes when we shall be called on to proclaim them from the mountain top! and lo! God’s hidden ones shall start up from the lowly places of the earth to bear witness to that which they have seen and known: and the little rills that man has heeded not shall coalesce, and the river of God’s truth, omnipotent in its energy, shall flood the earth, and sweep away in its resistless course the ignorance and unbelief and folly and sin which now dismay and perplex you. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 24-5.)

Cast your eyes beyond the present. Look to the far future, and be of good courage. (Spirit leader Imperator in Moses, ST, 25.)

God and War

God has many ways of working to bring certain things about and, when gentle means fail, He has to try sterner measures. …

Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that God cannot intervene in this war; (1) He has done so many times or the Germans would have swept you over your land long ago. He watches every movement of this war and so does the Christ, also those High and Holy Spirits who specially direct the affairs of earth. Always cling to the Fatherhood of God, which Christ specially came to reveal for if “He numbers the hairs of your head” and notes when a sparrow falls to the ground, how deeply must this gigantic upheaval affect Him! (J. W. Sharpe, M.A., in FMABL, 130-1.)

(1) The First World War.

[A] marvellous power [is] contained in the soul of each human being when consciously united with the power of God. I say consciously because it must be consciously exercised to be effective. When this power is combined with others like-minded, it is of such extraordinary potency that it becomes a faith that can literally remove mountains.

Will you let others know this truth so that they may combine their efforts…, and I am quite certain the result will surprise them. But remember it is a power for good only when all self is eliminated and the inner Spiritual Power of each one is linked on to the Great Central Force of God. Then do we in very deed co-operate with Him. (J. W. Sharpe, M.A., in FMABL, 131-2.)

Here we watch, and wait, and pray, for the hosts of evil are abroad everywhere (1) and the cloud is over the whole earth. We know there is sunlight behind that cloud, but the power is given to man to let the sunlight break through or he can delay that blessed event. So pray, and pray, and pray, below all your outward work, that the dynamic power of prayer may break down these clouds of sin and horror and let God’s smile through. (J. W. Sharpe, M.A., in FMABL, 133-4.)

I believe the decision is near whether humanity will have rest for awhile, or whether the raging of the elements should continue. Are these holy and exalted currents strong enough to overcome the weapons and the wild elements? I do not know. I have heard of all this through a high mediator who, albeit, was not present there. I was permitted to convey to you, however, the few things I have been told. It is the most important news nevertheless; consider it a great gift therefore. (Sigwart, BOTR, 90.)

The Existence of Adversaries – See The Adversaries

Earth Changes and Treatment of Nature

I know you are wondering why in the world and throughout the world you are having so many catastrophes.

Don’t you see the answer?

The world has gone completely, or almost completely, materialistic. They worship money and power on this plane and on the lowest level and so to break their mad rush, groups of people have to be withdrawn suddenly so as to shock those who remain into some sort of fear or a questing state of mind. (Sir Alvary Gascoigne in AL, 51.)

There are going to be [earth] changes because the planet is evolving. The planet has changed; ever since its creation it has changed. Some of the geological changes have been abrupt, but not nearly as abrupt as rumor would have it. (Edgar Cayce’s spirit control Michael to Robert Leichtman, PP, 60.)

It is extremely encouraging that man has realized his error [in his treatment of nature] in time to do something about it. And, of course, he will. (Nikola Tesla, NTR, 83.)

Spirit’s Work for the New Order

We have aided those who have become faint-hearted, given strength to those who were weary, guided those who had lost their way and acted as an incentive to those who strive to work for their fellows, giving them the realization that behind them there is a mighty host of spirit spurring them on in all their endeavours for the Great Spirit and His children. (Silver Birch, TSB, 44-5.)

I wish you could see the extent of our influence. We have helped to break barriers, to remove obstacles and to bring knowledge. These are the things your world needs, the simple truths that will enable spiritual, mental and material freedom to come to your world. (Silver Birch, TSB, 45.
